Some answers to that question . . . 'Wha-didja-catchem-on?'

“ Whatdidyacatchemon? ” is a many syllabled word that’s mighty familiar to the empty-stringer-fisher-man casting a glance at a full limit of bragging bass down at the boat dock. The answers to the fish-

erman’s universal question vary in detail and honesty, but one answer being heard more and more is: Spinner baits. What are they and why do they catch fish? Only the fish know the answer to the latter question but as to the first... a lead weighted jig body with a hair or plastic skirt attached to a “safetypin” type wire with a spinner on one end describes it. Maybe the spinning spinner blade attracts the fish. Maybe the vibrating noise of the blade attracts them. Maybe a lot of reasons, but the fact is that spinner baits catch fish from top to bottom. Here’s how to fish them: ♦ ♦ ♦ ON TOP is called “Buzz’n” and it’s deadly in the spring and certain times of the fall. A fast retrieving reel like the 803 or Zebco One that’s capable of bringing in 18-22 inches of line at a single crank is a big asset. The bait has to stay on top . . . over logs and through stickups. Another big asset a buzz’n bait fisherman can have in the boat is one of tff.ese reels loaded with Golden Stren line. That’s right! Yellow-looking line that helps track the lure through the brush. ♦ » ♦ FALLING is another way to fish the spinner bait. It’s a variation of the first. When the lure reaches the log or stick-up or is over a drop off, let it fall. When it falls to the depth you’ve figured is the right one, raise the rod tip and crank the 808 to get it back up. More times than not the strike comes when the lure

is falling. ♦ ♦ ♦ JIG’N the bottom is a variation on the falling technique. This method of fishing the spinner bait is used night fishing during the summer or cold water fishing in the winter months. Most often the type water you’ll be fishing will fall into the general categories of rocky bluffs or points. Cast to the bank or out on the point. Don’t engage the reel but rather let the line flow freely. If you’re , using heavy spinning gear like the Cardinal 6 or Cardinal 7, leave the bail open. When the bait reaches the bottom, jig it back keeping it close to the bottom. ♦ ♦ * How do fish hit these baits? On top with a buzz’n bait they kill it! Falling they’ll usually simply “twitch” the line very lightly. When jig’n the bait many times they’ll “twitch” it when falling or simply stop it. Experiment with these baits in size, color and blade configuration. Some days it may be a green striped ’/soz. Doll Spin and the next day a red and yellow Bass Rat with a red blade. How important is the blade? For two weeks in the spring of ’72 on one Oklahoma lake white skirted baits with red blades did the trick. Try ’em. They like ’em. R-V rental plan for occasional campers For the stay-at-home family that hits the road too seldom to justify the cost of a complete RV rig, rental may be a convenient answer, according to International Trucks, a major manufacturer of recreational vehicles. Rental on a weekly basis runs between $75 and $125 for travel trailers, $65 to S9O for fold-down camping trailers, $125 to S2OO for truck and camper combinations and $225 to $350 for motorhomes. There will also be an extra 8 to 12 cents a mile charge when the towing vehicle is part of the package or when you’re renting a motorhome. Basic rates tend to be lowest on the West Coast. Under most rental agreements, the driver pays for his gas, must get phone authorization for repairs of more than $25, and must pay a deposit refundable upon return of the vehicle in good condition. If you decide you want to rent a recreational vehicle, some comparative price shopping may help.

Formerly inaccessible locations become your campsite if you select your transportation carefully. Recreational vehicle choice depends on need

Can a young couple from a large city find vacation happiness in a deserted little mining town in the west exploring some of America’s forgotten roads on the edge of the national wilderness? The answer is yes, providing it’s not going to be a one-way trip. If you’re going off on your own for a vacation, make sure that your transportation is comfortable, dependable and safe, because it’s the only thing that’s going to get you back home, aside from a tow truck or rescue party. Companies today produce a broad range of recreational vehicles (RV) designed to get you there and back while serving virtually all camping needs. Before you buy, carefully examine your needs. How many people covering what age range will be using the RV? How will the RV be used? Hunting, fishing, camping, or long hauls cross country covering mountains and deserts? Do you really like to rough it, or are you actually a softy at heart? How much money do you want to spend? Depending on your requirements, you have a wide choice in the market today. Many favor the single unit variety of RVs, which can range from a simple truck shell camper to a full scale motor home. The truck shell camper is basically a pickup truck with a canopy unit mounted on the rear payload area. At the least it offers sleeping and storage accommodations, and at best it can hold full living facilities. The more elaborate truck camper units have a sleeping bunk that overhangs the truck cab. will depend on the weight load of the camper. and where you hope to haul it. If gdu. want to travel first classand still drive a single unit RV, you’ll want to investigate the increasingly popular motorhome. This large, completely self-con-tained unit is essentially a travel trailer that has swallowed up the towing Vehicle into its front end, leaving

driver’s seat and living quarters under a single roof. Popular today and getting more so, motorhomes are available in a wide choice of chassis options, including special heavy duty suspensions and wide track axles for improved stability. Travel trailers, however, are still probably the most popular of the RVs. They come in a variety of sizes to meet virtually any vacation need. But when you’re out on your own, it is still the towing vehicle that’s going to take you and your trailer back home. So don’t ignore Whatever your travel plans are and however much you are able to spend, keep in mind the importance of safe and dependable mobility. It will pay off in the long run. Check Batteries Before leaving on your trip, check the batteries for your transistor radios, flashlights, movie cameras, etc. at any dealer’s battery tester. Date the replacements. If over six months old, replace them to obtain maximum performance.
