Wawasee girls track team wins regional
The Wawasee high school girls track team scored 55 points to win the regional crown at Elkhart Memorial last Saturday. Warsaw come in second with 34, Crown Point was third with 32 and Chesterton scored 31 for fourth place. Wawasee’s 440 relay team — Roxanna Auer, Peg Beer, Bev Berghorn and Wilma Detwiler — won first place and broke the regional record with a time of 53.3.

Peg Beer won first in the standing long jump and second in the shot put. Roxanna Auer won second in the 880 yard run. Vicki Wilson tied the regional record in the high jump, five feet, 11 inches, to win first in her event.
IN JUNIOR OLYMPICS — Four special education students from Syracuse elementary school participated Saturday in the regional Special Olympics track and field meet at South Bend Adams high school. Donnie Kauffman and Diane Glaze won first place ribbons in the s<Kyard dash. Diane also placed well in the standing long jump. Second place ribbons went to Bonnie Niles and Mike Gonzales for the 50-yard dash. Mike placed high in the softball throw, also. These four students will be participating in the state meet in Terre Haute in June.

Other winners were Willa Detwiler, third in 100 and fifth in 80 yard hurdles and Wilma Detwiler, sixth in the 50 yard dash. The state meet will be held on Saturday, May 19, at Purdue university.
Wawasee golfers stop Rochester to win NLC conference match
Members of the Wawasee golf team came through to win a Northern Lakes Conference match against Rochester at South Shore on Monday night. The A-teams tied at 171 all when the scores of the low four men were totaled. The score of the fifth man on each team was then added to give the Warriors a 215 to 219 victory. Bob Bauman scored 41 for the Warriors with Mark Randall
Jenny Cox, Tracy Rinker qualify for YMCA gymnastics meet
Two Syracuse girls have qualified for the Indiana State YMCA gymnastics championships, to be held in Elkhart, Saturday, May 19. Jenny Cox, daughter of Jim and Wilma Cox, r 2 Syracuse, will compete in the 13 and 14-year-old division. Tracy Rinker, daughter of Freda and Jan Rinker, r 4 Syracuse, will be in the 11- and 12year old division. The girls were two of 11 from the Elkhart YM team who qualified at the northern district meet. J The Elkhart YM team has been competing for about three years. Saturday’s state meet will be its
County bowling banquet The County Bowling league held its annual banquet meeting at the bowling alley south of Syracuse, Monday, May 14. There were 68 members present. The total number of bowlers in the league for the year was 129. The actual pinfall was counted at 1,198,718 pins. The individual average for the league came out to 158.6. Seven bowlers participated in every game bowled by the league this year. Those bowling in all 99 games were Jerry Byrd, Bill Etchison, Harold Peterson, John Scarbeary, Roy Schultz, Jerry Searfoss and Cliff Wogoman. Thornburg Drug was the only team in the league to bowl every night with a complete five-man team. Awards were presented at the banquet. The league championship was won by Charlie’s Ten Pin. Members of the team were Max Ganshorn, Verlin Stayer, Harold Schrock, Paul Beezley, Ron Hibschman, Bill"*' Coburn and Charles Frushour. First and second place team high series awards were won by Charlie’s Ten Pin and Barbee Hotel for rolling tying series of 2778. Third place went to Thornburg Drug with 2776. The team high game award also went to Charlie’s Ten Pin with 990. Thornburg Drug followed close behind with 983. And Barbee Hotel came in third with 972. The individual high average award was given to Dick Thibaut for his season average of 185.96. Dick Hyde took second place with 178.71. An average of 178.48 gave the third position to Harold Schrock. Jerry Thornburg took the individual high series award with 640. Rolling 637 earned Robert Simon second place. Charles Frushour came in third with 632. The individual high game award was presented to Harold Schrock for bowling 258. Second place went to Jerry Davis with 255. And Fred Avery took third place with 247. Bill Etchison was awarded with the most improved average award for an 18 pin increase. The secretary’s award was given to Ed Anderson. scoring 42 and Greg Ummel, Jon Owens and Randy Rich each hitting 44. Mike Cover led the Zebras with 40 points. He was followed by Tim Rhoads vvith 42. Steve Persson with 43, Joe Notz with 46 and Allen Burch with 48. The Warrior B-team also won with a score of 169-195. Warrior Steve Coverstone hit 39 to be low medalist for the evening. Next Thursday the Warriors will be at Whitko.

Jenny Cox is this year’s Indiana high school gymnastics champion, and will enter her first AAU competition this week end The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the main gym of Elkhart’s new YMCA. While he would not reveal his fishing site he did comment that he was using artificial bait and was fishing from the shore when he hooked his prize catch.

Sue Hoover of Syracuse was elected president of the Tuesday Night Ladies bowling league at the league’s annual banquet Tuesday evening at a Ligonier restaurant. Also elected was Judy Brumbaugh of Milford as Sgt.-at-arms. Out-going president Linda Crow was in charge of the short business meeting which followed the meal. Secretary Barbara Miller and treasurer Joan Hoover presented the individual pins, prize money and trophies. Sherry Keim was presented the most improved average trophy Lakeland schools to have summer basketball clinic This year there will be a summer basketball clinic conducted in each of the three Lakeland Community School Corporation communities — Milford, North Webster and Syracuse. All boys who will be in grades five, six, seven and eight next fall are eligible to attend. There will be no charge for the clinic. The schedule follows: Milford — June 18-22 from 1 to 3 p.m. for all fifth and sixth graders; and June 25-29 from 1 to £ p.m. for seventh and eighth graders Syracuse — July 2,3, 5 and 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. for fifth and six graders and July 9-13 from 1 to 3 p.m. for all seventh and eighth graders North Webster — July 16-20

The Frog Tavern team also won the high team scratch series with 2314 and the high team scratch game with 830. High team handicap series and game was awarded to Hawk’s Recreation with 2227 and 800. Individual awards were given to Mary Lou Dixon for high game with 248 and Sherry Keim for high series with 587.

On his program will be the following: dribbling; passing; offense with and without the ball ; r -individual offensive moves; defense, with and away from the ball; shooting, a fine breakdown of the entire shooting process, video tape of each boy to correct shooting defects; rebound and tipping; introduction of the style for shooting free throws to be used; and films of outstanding high school and college games. Boys wishing to attend the clinic should contact their school office no later than Tuesday, May 22.
