tajziNjfebK around 7 Dan and Linda Stephan of Huntington are moving to Lake Wawasee and plan to open a realty company, to be known as Beaty Associates, Inc. Their office will be located on the south shore of the big lake, and this column would predict the handsome young couple will do well in their venture here. They are associated with Richard Beaty, who has been in the real estate business since 1958. The new firm wants to zero in on lake properties. Construction is well on the way on the third condominium at Bay Point, on the south shores of Lake Wawasee. Amos Delagrange, owner of the complex, is constructing the 18-unit structure just west of the other two. The Lakeland area roadways received a good cleaning this past week by local youth groups in keeping with national clean-up week and looks much the better for spring. Speaking of spring cleaning, one resident this week said it sure would be nice if interested parties would clean the Turkey Creek water area of town. Any takers? If you wondered why a number of students were seen on the street last Wednesday forenoon, and not in school, a number of fourth grade students under

teacher Mrs. Sharyn O’Hare, were interested in learning more about local businesses. Each student visited two business places and held interviews filling in questionnaires and having their pictures taken in many of the places. Room mothers helped with transportation. Mary (Mrs. Robert) Swager, gal Friday at First Charter Insurance, was indeed quite surprised Friday morning when a number of her coffee break friends chose to surprise her with a birthday breakfast at a local restaurant. Local Camp Fire Girls and Blue Birds put talent ideas to work recently in a clean-up poster contest of which winners are on display in the local newspaper office window. Many telephones and electricity went out of commission last Friday afternoon on Syracuse Lake’s north shore, even pulling junction boxes from walls, as a sectional home being hauled by truck, caught a number of lines. The fire department responded to one call at 1:49 p.m. for a burning power line which was down, however, no estimate of damage was given. Another last minute reminder many do not like to hear is personal property assessment is due May 15. Turkey Creek township assessor Harry VanHemert has given a reminder this week including items covered and delinquent charges. Walt Disney’s showing of The World’s Greatest Athlete this past week at the Pickwick, broke house records again for attendance, the second time this past year. Many interior improvements are continuing at the show house. Rains Tuesday took most of the Magnolia blooms from the numerous trees at the city park. Reservation blanks are in the mail for the annual Syracuse high school alumni banquet set for June 9, and are to be returned to Priscilla Rhode.

Our querry came on the heals of persistent rumors that Ron has sold his family-owned business of some49-years. Ron said, in fact, that he is planning improvements of the operation, with the idea of being at the helm for a long time to come. They are a PontiacChevrolet dealership. Lakeland grocery store check out clerks “went to school” Monday night as store managers gave them a lesson on the new four per cent sales tax law that went into effect on Tuesday, May 1. Everything worked well Tuesday as clerks separated nontaxable food items from taxable non-food items. Many of them are sweating out the Thursday, Friday and Saturday rush, however. Look for the opening of a restaurant in downtown Leesburg soon, in the corner building which formerly housed the Braddock drug store. Miss Katharine Rothenberger has as her Papakeechie Lake houseguest for the month, a longtime friend, Miss Sadie Dawson of Exeter, England.
