THE MAIL-JOURNAL Wed., April 4,1973 SUNDAY SPEAKER — Rev. Walter C. Burcham of° the Syracuse Church of God will be speaker for the Community Lenten service on April 8 at the Calvary United Methodist church, Syracuse. The subject this Passion Sunday will be “The Paradox of Suffering.” The choir from Syracuse junior high school will sing during the service. Rev. Jack Farrell was speaker last Sunday at Wawasee Lakeside chapel. The service on April 15 will be in the Church of God, 113 E. Washington street, with Rev. Richard Ohlemacher of Wawasee Prep as speaker. A 30 voice choir from Wawasee high school will sing during the April 15 service. The public is cordially invited to attend all services. Receives grant for further refinement The director of the office of fiscal planning, Fr. Francis K. Scheets, 0.5. C., Ph D, was the recipient of a recent $15,000 grant. Bishop Leo A. Pursley, DD, announced the awarding of the grant by the Frank J. Lewis Foundation of Chicago, 111. The funds were granted to permit further refinement of the Parish Management Information system Fr. Scheets has been working on for several years. Working closely with the diocesan superintendent of schools, Fr. James Seculoff and diocesan business manager Joseph A. Barbieri, Fr. Scheets has developed a system for analyzing parish fiscal and personnel data on an annual basis. After his ordination in 1951 as a Crosier Father, Father taught history for many years. His current interest in financing stems from 1967 when he helped to install a uniform, computer based, accounting system at the Crosier House of Studies, Fort Wayne; Wawasee Prep, Syracuse; and in other religious houses in the American Province of Crosier Fathers. In 1969 and in 1972 he was one of the organizers of diocesan wide workshops on parish finances. Currently he is a member of the Crosier Order’s Provincial Finance board, and is the finance chairman of the Board of Control at Wawasee Prep, where he also teachers several courses in social studies. Since 1964 he has been a regular figure at Saint Thomas church, Elkhart, where he helps the parish priest on Sundays. Local student assists professor < GOSHEN — The office of the president of Goshen college announces that a local student is one of 209 completing a one or two trimester appointment as an assistant or teaching fellow to a professor. Miss Mary E. Coleman, senior, daughter of Mrs. S. Jean Coleman, r 4 Syracuse, is a student assistant to Dr. J. Howard Kauffman in the field of sociology winter term. She is a 1969 graduate of Wawasee high’ school. Student assistants and fellows do research and perform instructional and clerical duties for 57 faculty members in 23 fields. This frees the professor to spend more time with individual students, do advanced research in his field, and develop creative teaching methods. Hiis opportunity, a tradition at the college, helps students understand the responsibilities of a college professor and may promote the student’s interest in the field or in college teaching. Eight of the 209 students are teaching fellows. Student assistant can work a maximum of ten hours per week, subject to the professor’s need and the student’s academic preparation. Assistants are paid by the hour, and teaching fellows are paid a monthly salary. Goshen college is a four-year, fully-accredited liberal arts college located in northern Indiana. The college, serving 1,092 students this year, is owned and controlled by the Mennonite church.
