The Hastings Grange celebrated their 25th anniversary Monday evening at the Waubee Grange hiill. 40 YEARS AGO, MARCH 30,1933 Milo Anglin lost his little finger at the Wilt factory in Syracuse Wednesday afternoon. The Van Buren township farm bureau met at the library on the evening of March 22. Ira Chupp has erected quite an extensive pigeon roost on his property here and has approximately 36 grown pigeons at the present time. Friday evening at about 5 o’clock the oil stove at the Freeman Hollar residence exploded causing a rug nearby to catch fire. For the past week fishermen have been successful in catching suckers in the local streams. On Friday night the senior class of Milford high school presented “Pollyanna”, a 4 act comedy at the community building. Russel Tom spent Sunday with Dale Tom and family. 'Mr. and Mrs. George Roscoe of Goshen celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Monday with an open house at their home. Jimmie and Dorothy Mathews spent Sunday with Alvin and Dorothy Tusing. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Birchfield are the parents of a daughter born Sunday. Examination to be given for substitute carrier at Syracuse The United States Postal Service has announced an examination to be given at South Bend for a substitute rural carrier of record at Syracuse. Application cards are available at the Syracuse office. Applications must be submitted before April 27. Applicants must take a written test requiring three to four hours and will be rated on a scale of 100, with at least 70 rating (excluding credit for veteran preference) to be eligible. Applicants must also be physically qualified as well as have a valid state driver license and safe driving record. He must also pass the postal service road test, plus furnish and maintain at his own expense, vehicle equipment necessary for prompt handling of the mails. The carrier however, will be given an equipment maintenance allowance based on the daily mileage schedule or a minimum allowance per day, whichever is greater. Substitutes may perform as the result of scheduled days off, leave, illness, military service or other reasons, of file regular rural carrier. Eligibility will be limited to one year unless after 10 months a request is asked to extend for an additional year, afterwhich the postal installation is notified. Maximum eligibility is two years. Mr-- yWpWßbv ■ — I PHIL ANGLE RECEIVES AWARD — Phillip D. Angle, r 2 Milford, was awarded the United Telephone Company of Indiana, Inc., Customer Relations Award for February. Angle is shown on the right of the above photo being congratulated by Maynard Hochstetler, district manager for the firm’s Nappanee area. Angle received the award for assistance he gave when he was returning to his home after work on February 21 and came upon an auto accident that had just occurred. He assisted one of the drivers to get out of his wrecked truck. He continued his assistance until the ambulance arrived. Angle was chosen for the February Customer Relation Award for his deed from the 1,373 United employees throughout the state of Indiana.

Brazil mayor thanks for orphanage Joao Julio de Faria, mayor of the city of Boa Esperancea, Minas Gerais, Brazil has sent a letter containing his personal word of thanks to the directors of the Lar Esperanca (Home of Hope) orphanage. The letter also expresses the utmost appreciation of the city for the sacrificial work that the home is giving the entire population of the town. The mayor’s letter continues, “What has caused the greatest admiration in such a work has been the comments made about the depth and magnitude of a people from another country, who came to this little, povertystricken city and, with outstretched arms and hearts filled

with love, have dedicated themselves to help the children and less fortunate than the least of us, offering to all a kind word in the Saviour’s name. . .” These people from another country are Miss Josephine Kupferschmid, sister of Mrs. Levi J. Beer of Milford and Virginia Beer, daughter of the Levi Beers. Miss Kupferschmid sold her home in Illinois and with the proceeds built the orphanage. The support of this home for the needy is from nondenominational interested organizations and persons in the USA. At the present time Miss Kupferschmid is working with some 20 employees. Children range in age from newborns through teenagers with 36 now being cared for at the home. Miss Kupferschmid has been appointed president and Miss Beer secretary of the orphanage’s board of directors.
