Wed., March 28,1973 — THE MAIL-JOURNAL
TO THE EDITOR
Down Memory Lone
Dear Editor: I know you and Mrs. B. are off in far places (or were, anyway), since we’ve beep enjoying your articles very much about your trip. I hope you keep up the traveling and reporting. I wanted to tell you people at The Mail office how much I enjoyed, also, the two pictures courtesy of Lawrence Homan showing two of Miss Mollie Pinkerton’s classes (1909) and two of Miss Martha Groves’ classes, the children being the same ones (1913) for the most part, at different ages. Although these were pictures of my sister Helen’s class and the one between hers and mine, I was visiting the day they took the picture of grades one and two in February 1909 and there I was as big as life in my white dress and white bow, front center, between Lloyd (Peanuts) Archer and John Lentz! Everything was quiet in our living room and my husband was reading another paper when I spied myself in the picture and called out, “Why, here’s Grace Jane Benson.” I think my husband thought I was losing my mind until I showed him that

picture. I began looking for other faces and I was only stumped by two or three. What fun it was to look over those little faces and go back in memory to those days! I’m sure it meant as much to many others who saw the pictures and knew who all or most of the children were. I’m glad Edna (Haab) Polk and Hattie (Davissen) Becker were able to tell you who the children were. Not too many years ago, when I was in Milford with my daughter Linda, we went to see Miss Pinkerton. She seemed to enjoy the visit very much (as both Linda and I did) and before I left she gave me a copy of the 1909 picture for me to keep. I never had a teacher I liked (and loved) any more than I did Miss Pinkerton. She always typified the true teacher to me. I’m sure she loved all children and I’m sure all children who were fortunate enough to go to her loved her. I remember some who cried and didn’t want to be promoted to the third grade because it meant leaving Miss Pinkerton. Sincerely, Grace (Benson) Brebner Twentynine Palms, Calif.
CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank all of our friends and neighbors for the kindness shown to us during our time of sorrow. A special thanks to the Milford Christian church and Mishler funeral home. The Alfred L. Place family
