State-federal agricultural statisticians at Purdue university report that 260,000 sows are expected to produce litters March through May. This is a two per cent increase over the corresponding period of 1972. For the June through August period Hoosier farmers plan to have 258,000 sows farrow —a three per cent increase. Two hundred forty-four thousand sows farrowed 1.8 million pigs on Indiana farms during December, 1972, and January and February, 1973. This was six per cent more sows than a year earlier and a five per cent increase in the pig crop. Farmers in the 10 corn belt states which produce the bulk of the nation’s pork supply also plan to increase their production.
