Legion Auxiliary has program on the Riverwood Ranch
The American Legion Auxiliary, Ancil Geiger unit 226 of Milford, met March 6 with a program being presented on the Riverwood Ranch at Warsaw. Mrs. Peter Strayer gave a short introduction of the ranch and introduced John Sholly who is a Grace seminary graduate. Many interesting things happen at the Riverwood Ranch which is under the guidance of John and Jerry Sholly. They are house parents to 10 boys. The Shollys have two children of their own. The ranch was started in June 71 and offers many opportunities to the boys. They care for animals, fish, hike, have music lessons, Bible study and many other things. After the program, unit president Mrs. Oliver Replogle opened the meeting.

Awards presented at blue and gold banquet Monday The annual Blue and Gold banquet was held at the Epworth Forest hotel last Monday night at 6. Attendance at the carry-in buffet dinner which was climaxed by a beautifully decorated cake supplied by the Lions club, sponsor, reached the fantastic figure of 269. Awards presented to scouts were as follows: 12 bobcat pins, five wolf badges, 11 arrows, one bear badge, six Webelo awards, one two-year pin and two new den mother pins. All den mothers were honored also. The two new den mothers are Mrs. Vicki Baily and Mrs. Cecil Paulus. Also honored were: Mrs. Harold Galloway, Mrs. Lewis Lindeman, Mrs. Ron Harris, Mrs. Verle Wilkey and Mrs. Robert Stump. Den mothers receiving special recognition for extra efforts were: Mrs. Eastel Walls, Mrs. Charles Houghey, Mrs. Dennis Huffman, Mrs. Joe Ray, Mrs. Chris Brower and Miss Cheryl Simpson. Miss Simpson, who is a student, received a certificate of merit and was transferred from regular full time to part time duties. Each of the six dens presented pantomine skits depicting events in the lives of famous people with the audience engaged in naming the famous persons, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Neil Armstrong, John F. Kennedy and Geronimo. Guest speaker for the evening was Nelson Hunt whose topic was “Old and New.” He exhibited antique tools, etc. used by farmers in the past and showed pictures of past farming implements and operations to illustrate his points. Mrs. Hunt was also a guest at the meeting. Other guests included Mr. and Mrs. Larry Nickelson. Larry is district representative in cub scouts and had a few words for the group. The legion birthday will be on March 17 at 6:30. All legion and auxiliary members are invited. Americanism chairman Mrs. Stan Scott gave a review on the Indians, what their names mean and the ones who lived around this area. - Finance chairman Mrs. Russell Ruch has place mats on hand. “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” was sung. Mrs Hattie Becker received the door prize. Hie committee served various salads, crackers, coffee and orangeade. The committee for April will be Mrs. Worth Jackson, Mrs. Don Charlton, Mrs. Marvin Rapp and Mrs. Dan Levernier. Mrs. Dean Baker will be in charge of games.

Mrs. Bill Strombeck, assisted by her able 12 den mothers, was in charge of the banquet and program. Mrs. Strombeck praised her den mothers for their help and devotion and stressed the need for still more den mothers and for volunteers to assist Lynn and Ledru Gray and their assistant, Jeff Garr who are involved with the Webelos. With 44 new members, more leadership is definitely required. Anyone who cares to assist in any way may contact Mrs. Strombeck, Mr. Gray or the pack master, Rev. Charles Myers. Father Kunkel speaks to Kiwanis club Inter-club from Warsaw included Larry Castoldi, Howard Mayes, Bob Ashman, Lew Luckenbill at the recent Kiwanis club meeting. It was announced that scoutmaster and cubmaster are needed for the local program. New committee appointments were Theo Thomas, major emphasis; Hazen Sparks, citizenship services; Ron Owens, interclub. Theo Thomas, Chris Koher, Jr., Chris Koher, Sr., Ron Owens and John Weeks harmonized “Happy Birthday” as they sang to Hazen Sparks. A petition to limit speed on “the flowing well” curve was adapted by ballot and will be forwarded to the appropriate authorities. The program arranged by Pat McCarty was given by Father Kunkel, Wawasee Prep School admissions director. He gave a brief history of the school building from 1920 when it was a hotel and a gambling casino to the recent time when changed to a co-educational institution. He discussed the academic, sports, budget and maintenance of the

school and answered questions. Ralph Haynes is in charge of the next program, “Share Your Life.” Lakeview Pythian Sisters plan party An informal meeting of Lakeview Pythian Sisters was held last Monday night and plans made for observing the 32d anniversary of the local organization with a special party on March 26. Committees appointed to work out details were Mrs. Verland Bockman and Mrs. Carl Kissinger, Menu; Mrs. Stanley (Ermal) Vanator and Mrs. Harry Bouse, program; and Mrs. Kissinger will be in charge of decorations. The group has been invited to serve for the Lions club dinner meetings for a limited period. A special meeting was held Tuesday afternoon to formulate more detailed plans and arrangements, results are not yet available. wscs replaced by UMW The organization of United Methodist Women has replaced the former WSCS as of January 16, 1973. Purchase Jot-Em-Down ’ John Kussmaul has purchased the “Jot-Em-Down” store in Barbee and is residing with his family in the 900 block of East Center street, Warsaw. His mother has an apartment at Barbee. Mr. and Mrs. Kussmaul have four children, Jimmy, 18; Mary, 17 is a high school junior; Joan, 15, will attend freshman highschool; and Jennifer, 6, is in first grade. Mr. Kussmaul will begin operation of the grocery at Barbee this week. COMMUNITY NEWS Mrs. Martha Kussmaul has returned to make her home in the Barbee community. She has been spending winters with her son and his family in Minnesota. Mr. and Mrs. Stu Walker entertained at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at their home for members and prospective members of the North Webster United Methodist choir. A carry-in dinner was shared by choir members and their families and guests. Miss Vicki Vanator, Syracuse, and Ronald Hernskiene, Fort Wayne, visited her grandmother, Mrs. Stanley Vanator, Sunday afternoon. Joe Staples, Fort Wayne, visited his parents Sunday as guest of honor at dinner in recognition of his 19th birthday. Miss Amanda Grimes was also a guest. Mrs. Jacob (Iva) Krouse visited the Robert Pifer family Sunday. Melanie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pifer, was home from college this week end. LAKELAND LOCAL Mrs. Arlo Beiswanger spent two weeks in Huntsville, Ala., recently at the home of her son, Mr. and Mrs. Jan B. Fuller and family. She took care of the children while Mr. and Mrs. Fuller vacationed in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Dutchtown church setting for Hummel, Davis wedding
Candelabra accented with fall colored straw flowers, decorated the altar at the Dutchtown Brethren church, Warsaw, for the recent marriage of Miss Barbara Ann Hummel, Leesburg, and Glenn D. Davis, Milford. The pews were marked with yellow and orange ribbons surrounding a cluster of bittersweet. Rev. George Pontious, paster of the church, officiated at the double ring ceremony. Nuptial music was provided by Mrs. Waunita Tusing. Miss Debbie Engelberth sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” Parents of the bridal couple are Mr. and Mrs. James A. Hummel, r 1 Leesburg, and Mr. and Mrs. Devon Davis, r 1 Milford. Given in marriage by her father, the bride appeared in a gown of candlelight satin and reembroidered Alencon lace. Lace, accented with seed pearls and crystals, outlined the portrait neckline, the bodice and the long fitted sleeves. Deep scallops of lace encircled the hemline of the A-line skirt. Matching lace bordered her cathedral mantilla. Her attendants, Miss Debra Hummel, maid of honor, and Miss Brenda Davis, bridesmaid, appeared in empire styled dresses of avocado crepe. Both carried bouquets of straw flowers with yellow and orange streamers. Gentlemen attending the bridegroom were Louie Davis, Leesburg, best man and Jerry McClintic, Syracuse, groomsman. Larry Kammerer, Leesburg and Ted Davis, Milford serves as ushers. Miss Lori Hummel, sister of the tride, registered the guests. At the reception approximately 125 guests greeted the bride and bridegroom. Mrs. Louie Davis and Mrs. Jerry McClintic served the guests. They were assisted by Misses Lisa and Karen Hummel, sisters of the bride. Mrs. Davis is a graduate of Wawasee high school and is
employed at NIPSCo in Syracuse. Mr. Davis also is a graduate of Wawasee high school and is employed at Syracuse Rubber Products. He is also engaged in farming. The newlyweds are at home at r 2 Leesburg. Guest speaker at Round Table The Ladies of the Round Table at Syracuse met Monday evening in the home of Mrs. Leonard Barnhart at which time attorney Robert Reed presented the program, “Keys to Law,” Attorney Reed presented club members with what he felt were main reasons for writing a will followed by a question and answer period. The meeting portion opened in usual form. Mrs. Junior Hollar reported on the club contribution to the Cardinal Learning Center. Serving on the program committee for the year will be Mrs. Vernon Beckman, Mrs. Harold Arnold and Miss Karel Hollingsworth. The card and flower committee will be in the charge of Mrs.Hollar and Mrs. Qayton Mock. Mrs. David Spray reported favors and center pieces for the upcoming county convention are nearly completed and reservations for the convention were taken. The next club meeting will be March 19 at the local flower shop for a program “Keys to Beauty.” Senior Citizens to meet at Milford fire station Members of the Milford Senior Citizens group will meet on Sunday, March 11, at 1 p.m. at the fire station on Main street for a pot luck dinner. All senior citizens are urged to attend.
Sorosis lesson is 'Renoir' The Sorosis club of Milford met Monday evening, March 5, at the home of Mrs. Otto Wiggs, Mrs. Wilford Wollman presiding. During the business meeting Mrs. Vernon Stutzman was voted in as a new member. The reciprocity meeting will be held April 9 at the Milford United Methodist church at 7:30 p.m. The regular club meeting scheduled for April 2 has been cancelled. The topic for the evening was the impressionist painter Renoir, ably and interestingly presented by Mrs. Parker Phend. At the close of the meeting refreshments were served by the hostess who used artistic touches in honor of Saint Patrick. Mrs. Howard Beer entertains for Silver Thimble Mrs. Howard Beer served as hostess for the members of the Silver Thimble club when they met in her home on March 5. Mrs. Frank Beer, Jr., was co-hostess. Mrs. Richard Kaiser, president, called the meeting to order by welcoming the guests who were present — Mrs. Jerry Templin, Mrs. Stan Wuthrich, Mrs. Richard Stoller and Mrs. Elmer Hartter. Secretary Mrs. Jess Beer called the roll and gave her report. Mrs. Walter Wuthrich passed the charity box and gave the treasurer’s report. Mrs. Don Hoover and Mrs. Phil Beer reported on the actions of the gift committee. Thank you notes were also read. After the business meeting “Happy Birthday” was sung to Mrs. Bob Hoerr, Mrs. Steve Haab and Miss Edith Baumgartner, all who have March birthdays. “Happy Anniversary” was then sung to Mrs. John Hurd, Mrs. Arnold Doll, Mrs. Ned Speicher and Mrs. Maurice Beer. Devotions were given by Mrs. Frank Beer, Jr. She gave a Bible quiz. She also led the members in reciting the 23d Psalm and singing “The Lord is my Shepherd.” Silent auction was used for the bake sale which was held. Lunch included beef and lettuce sandwiches, carrot curls, celery sticks, pecan tarts, coffee and lime punch. Mrs. Stan Wuthrich won the door prize. The next meeting will be April 2 with Mrs. Elmer Haab and Mrs. Glenn Price, Jr., as hostesses. Auxiliary discusses birthday Members of ’ the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 223, Syracuse, met last week for the regular monthly business meeting. Unit chairman gave reports and plans for celebrating the legion birthday were discussed. There will be a carry-in supper on Saturday, March 17, for all legion members, partners and auxiliary membars. Hostesses for the February meeting were Mrs. Herman Broekers, Mrs. Charles Richardson, Mrs. Harold Kline and Mrs. Everett Crow. LAKELAND LOCAL Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Beiswanger spent Sunday in Muncie with Mr. and Mrs. John Beiswanger and family. John is a teacher in the Storey junior high school at Muncie where he teaches math.
Mrs. Radcliffe entertains WMS The Woman’s Missionary Society of the First Brethren church, Milford, met at the parsonage Thursday evening, March 1, with Mrs. Jerald Radcliffe as hostess. Mrs. Robert Rassi was program chairman of the evening. The president, Mrs. Arlo Beiswanger, opened the meeting with a poem, “March Woods,” and prayer. She announced there would be an all day sewing at church, Wednesday, March 14, beginning at 9 a.m. with a Salad Bar at noon. All ladies of church invited. Mrs. Rassi gave a topic on the evangelist Timothy Dwight. Mrs. James Stuckman had charge of Circle of Prayer. Mrs. Rassi gave “The Sonship of Jesus” Romans 1:4, and “Jesus Life, and The Seven Wonders of Jesus.” “Jesus Paid it All,” was sung by the group and WMS benediction followed. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostess and cohostess. Omicron chapter has model meeting night The Kappa Omicron chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, Syracuse, met for the March meeting at the home of Mrs. Tom Hoover. A model meeting was conducted for prospective members. Guests were Mrs. Charles Koser, Mrs. James Berkey, Mrs. Thomas Gertsner, Mrs. Rodger Brown, Mrs. Carl Freel, Ron Roberts and Roger Henwood. Mrs. Robert Hasse explained aims, purposes and scopes of the sorority; Mrs. Hoover, a brief resume on highlights and history ; and Mrs. Dennis Bjella, out-standing achievements. Members agreed to purchase a hearing detection device for the Syracuse elementary school. The purchase will be made with funds earned from the recent bake sale. <, Mrs. Hasse gave the cultural program for the evening entitled, “Painting and Sculpture.” The meeting was then adjourned with guests joinig in the Mizpah. While the hostess and Mrs. Richard Keim served refreshments, guests were invited to browse through the chapter scrapbook. Travelogue given at Hex Grange meeting Some 50 patrons and friends met at the Hex Grange hall northeast of Syracuse Tuesday evening for an old-time supper. The dining room was lighted by kerosene lamps and tables were covered with red checked cloths. Bean soup from iron kettles and corn bread were included in the evening events. The literary program consisted of slides and a lecture given by Dr. and Mrs. George Ar ba ugh. Dr. Arbaugh is dean of Agustana college at Rock Island, 111. The program included events of a recent Iceland trip by the Arbaughs, travel through central, southern and northern Europe, and pictures of ancient cathedrals, aqueducts and catacombs. Dr. Arbaugh also explained the architecture of various buildings, concluding with their own cabin in Ely, Minn. Also present were Rev. and Mrs. Victor Yeager of Syracuse, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Wagner of Elkhart, Rev. William Arbaugh of Middlebury and Mrs. Cleo Miller, Goshen.
