Te convention will be held at Syracuse early in May. There were 11 members present for the meeting. Mrs. Frank Greene was welcomed back after a serious illness and hospitalization.
Backwater Friends study 'total outfit' Mrs. Harold Leach was hostess for the February meeting of the Backwater Friends on Thursday night. Her co-hostess was Mrs. Ken Moser. The meeting was opened in the usual manner by Mrs. Doug Bowser. All joined in singing the song of the month, “The Old Rugged Cross” with accompaniment by Mrs. Leach. Mrs. Moser read “Little Things” for meditation. Mrs. Arden Rider’s health and safety lesson' included diet tips. Garden remarks were given by Mrs. Don Mort and were on observations on bird feeding and bird watching. The citizenship lesson was also given by the hostess and was an informative study on vocational schools. Answer to roll call was given by the 16 members and one guest and was a diet tip or exercise. Miss Alice Leach was a guest at the meeting. Mrs. Gary Bergmeier was welcomed as a new member. Mrs. Doug Bowser gave a report on the county program planning meeting held recently.

Nominations and election of new officers resulted in the following: President — Mrs. Doug Bowser Vice president — Mrs. Don Mort Secretary — Mrs. Ernest Sutton Treasurer — Mrs. Joe Kruger Mrs. Bob Likens and Mrs. Doug Bowser gave the lesson on “total outfit” or “using accessories.” Two main points stressed in the lesson were the use of accessories to “dress-up” or to “dress down” an outfit and “style is what you feel comfortable in.” These points and others were impressed upon members by use of pictures showing ideas in color, style, hair styles and accessories and by clever modeUing of both casual and dressy outfits. He showed pictures of the “Sounds of Hope” tour last summer which included visits to Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and England. Valentine gave the history of the song of the month and members joined in singing “The Old Rugged Cross.” Health and safety remarks were given by Mrs. Gilbert Baumlee and concerned the dangers of certain wearing apparel, especially long skirts and long flowing scarves around some types of machinery. Mrs. Kline also had some timely suggestions for home gardeners interested in winter feeding of birds in her remarks about berrying shrubs and trees. Mrs. Howard Locke’s citizenship lesson included a brief report on the activities of the state legislature, particularly regarding collective bargaining and taxes. The leader training lesson, “Growing Toward Retirement” was given by Mrs. D. K. White. She stressed that only one-fourth of a person’s life is he truly young, therefore everyone must spend the remaining threefourths of his life growing old. She asked those present if people are to “get old” of “grow old.” She then explained the difference and assured those present that (jne of their best tools for “growing” old is their attitude. Members answered roll call with a favorite cherry recipe. Reports were given on the president’s council meeting and the bazaar by Mrs. Anderson and on the special interest lesson on self protection for women by Mrs. James McNaab. The club has ordered a diabetes testing kit for members’ home use. The meeting was adjourned by members joining in singing the club prayer song after which the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Marvin Ward, served cherry cheese cake dessert, coffee, tea and nuts to the 19 members present. During the social period it was announced absent member, Mrs. Nellie Henderson planned a quiet celebration of her birthday on Wednesday. Mrs. Ralph Akers extended an invitation to host the March meeting at her home in North Webster. —NW—COMMUNITY NEWS Mrs. Harley (Jean) Lemon and Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Howe were in Battle Creek, Mich., last week end where Mrs. Lemon’s son, Jerry, was appearing at Mr. Lucky’s. Jerry is traveling with the Woody Jones band and is constantly moving about. From Battle Creek, he moved to Rantoul, 111. Local residents escaping snow, ice and dropping temperatures by taking winter vacations in Florida at this time include Mr. and Mrs. Ray Vanator and Mr. * and Mrs. C. J. Menzie. Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Angel returned Saturday to their home from a two-week stay there. Mrs. Jacob (Iva) Krouse entertained the Past Chiefs club last Wednesday night. The evening was spent in social activities with prizes won by Mrs. Stanley Vanator, Mrs. Frank Greene and Mrs. Harry Bouse. A refreshment table of chicken a la king, fruit salad, cookies and coffee were served. The American pledge was given by Jeff Beezley and the 4-H pledge was led by Ronnie Aaron. No injuries in single-car crash A single car accident at 7:30 p.m. Friday on county road 1250 N, one-fourth mile east of Milford resulted in $125 damage to an auto driven by Marvin Miller, 23, r 1 Milford. 14 YEARS AGO, FEB. 26,1959 Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Disher, owners of the Milford Case, served free coffee last Friday and Saturday in observance of their first anniversary of opening. The Syracuse Classroom Teachers’ Association entertained the Kosciusko County Classroom Teachers’ Association Thursday in the school cafeteria. The Luther Ladies of Grace Lutheran church met recently at the home of Mrs. Floyd Disher with Mrs. Ada Crow as cohostess. Thirteen young people of the Christian church attended a youth rally at Betchelor’s Creek Christian church on Sunday afternoon. The East Side Merry Maidens met at the home of Pam Treesh at which time the leader gave out the yearbooks. Mr. and Mrs. James Randall of Leesburg are the parents of a son, Huntter Drudge. The Twilighters Bunco club met Wednesday night with Mrs. Billy Cobum. Earl Baker was the guest of honor in his home Sunday evening when friends and neighbors gathered to help him celebrate his birthday: The Turkey Creek Township Parent-Teachers Association met Tuesday night in the school cafeteria. Miss Mary Ann Stieglitz’s group of camp fire girls entertained their families and sponsors Saturday evening at the Scout Cabin with a talent show enjoyed by 70 people. 24 YEARS AGO, FEB. 24,1949 Mr. and Mrs. John Gardner and Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Insley of Syracuse arrived home Monday from a two week vacation in Florida. Mrs. Robert McLaren was hostess to Circle 5 Wednesday evening at her home. At the end of a hard fought basketball game at Mentone Friday night the Mentone boys emerged with a victory over Milford’s Trojans by a score of 47 to 43. Mr. and Mrs. Neal Cory entertained at their home Thursday evening in honor of their son, Dennis, who was celebrating his fifth birthday. The St-Mar-Kos Pomqna Grange met with the New Tomarack Grange Thursday evening with 40 members present. Mr. and Mrs Harry Beer have remodeled the front of their home by adding on a room and placing a porch along the east side of the house. A colorful group of Pine Tree Troop Girl Scouts met Wednesday evening with Sondra Warstler. The next meeting of the Milford Parent-Teachers Association will be held March 15 instead of March 8. Relatives of George Hartter met at his home Sunday evening for a pot luck supper in honor of his birthday. The new Milford fire truck went on its first call last Thursday night when firemen responded to an alarm in the Leesburg area. 30 YEARS AGO, FEB. 25,1943 The Columbian Reading Circle met Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Alyce Fuller. Black, 32, North Webster, who is being treated for cuts to the face, and Jack Himes, 44, r 1 Leesburg, who is being treatecPfor pains in his hip, back and neck. A passenger in the Himes car, Bonnie Himes, 37, r 1 Leesburg, was X-rayed and examined for pain in her left arm and released. L Deputies Alan Rovenstine and Burdell Blackburn and state trooper Michael Barnett investigated. Officers stated the accident occurred when Black’s car dropped off the side of the road and slid out of control into the path of the Himes vehicle. Black was cited following the accident for driving left of center. Damage was set at $550 to the Black auto and $875 to the Himes auto. u
