PURDUE 72-IU 69 — but another 70-69 game, as the last two were after the gun and would not have happened had it been tied or better. In otherwards, two shots would have clinched us the big ten title, but we now have Minnesota up there — almost a “no way” situation but stranger things have happened. Purdue went after the game harder than IU and got it. Downing was not the board man nor defensive whiz as usual and John Ritter did not get a field goal. If Ritter doesn’t score we don’t win — and too true. Abernathy was a surprised starter for defense on Kendrick. That worked but our offense didn’t score from that position. If Crews and Ritter don’t shoot more we are in trouble. The last call in a close game decides it and with 20 seconds it was charging and not blocking and Purdue won. The sth foul on Buckner looked funny, but in this game 50 plays make the difference. Gamauf played his best game of 3 years and Nichols came off the bench to hit for the Boilermakers and they stayed in the race. The schedule favors IU but it is strictly IU and Minnesota for us while Purdue and Illinois have other show-down games. Otis Armstrong received his Chicago Tribune trophy in red and white. lU’s colors. He was

against Donaldson Divine Heart at 4:30. At 6 o’clock, game two will feature Bethany Christian of Goshen against Indianapolis Latin school. Wawasee Prep will battle LaPorte LaLumiere at 7:45 in game three. Saturday afternoon, Feb. 17, pday will feature semi-final action. At 12:30, the winners of game one will play the winners of game two and at 2 p.m„ the winners of game three will take on Howe Military, which drew a bye. Championship game action will begin at 8 o’clock on Saturday night. The public is invited to attend all sessions of tourney action.

wearing them for Denver, the team that drafted him, but he should have worn it for IU the way he ran over, around, under, and through us for the last three seasons. He doesn’t look big in a basketball arena but he is mighty big on a football field. The basketball season is on its last leg. IU has 4 at home and 2 away. A little help. The coaches are concentrating on winning these games but they have passing thoughts on how to get 6’11” Benson of New Castle to IU or maybe the 7 footer out of Detroit. Anyone of that caliber could make Purdue a big ten contender next year but it would make IU a national champ. It looks like Benson will go to Notre Dame. There are three or four of these kind of players and only 400 schools after them.
