'O3JZInJO> a&jjo It’s official, according to a spokesman of the designconstruction committee of the Pickwick Development Corp., that bids are in and have been opened from four contractors for the long-awaited rebuilding process of the burned out Pickwick Block. However, quite discouraging was the fact that all bids were quite in excess of the budget set. The matter is being discussed with each bidder, who again will be contacted as soon as architects come up with further recommendations to meet the budget. Then, again each bidder has weather conditions or other stipulations, lending a question as to a proposed starting date. A definite announcement is expected within the next several weeks. This announcement came shortly after his coaching resignation acceptance at the school board meeting last week. If you by chance made a stop at the fire station Sunday, you might have enjoyed a light and delightful blueberry muffin baked by Grandma Moses. A well-known county man, Harold Melchi, lost his battle for survival with his death Saturday at Fort Wayne. Hospitalized since September of last year, he underwent open heart surgery on September 20. . The deep blue waters of the lakes rippled in many areas during the past week, however, a few chanced the fishing proposition on the remaining ice. Eight were seen fishing in the channel at Pickwick Park on Sunday. Temperatures dipping to the teens Sunday night put a thin sheet of ice in many previously open areas. Another vacationer known in the Syracuse area is K. W. Kurtz (and his lovely wife Phyllis) of Millersburg, who won a Puerto Rican holiday.

The trip was awarded K. W. for 20 years of service with his Ford firm at Goshen. Don’t forget the one day only showing of an excellent feature at the Pickwick on Thursday, Feb. 1. Millie Savage, at the bank, said last week that the warmer temperatures had pushed her tulips above ground. An interesting supplement to the Pulaski County Journal last week, and furnished by an insurance service at Winamac, was a Crime T.R.A.P. Manufacturing was poured this week. An interesting evening will be the WOWO night next Tuesday at the high school. There may be more than you think. Congratulations go thisweek to our excellent music department at the high school for their grand showing at the Culver meet last Saturday. Quite a number will be appearing in the state meet. Speaking of basketball, the girls high school team is doing quite well. Did you know February has been proclaimed as Weight Watchers Month by 11 Indiana mayors?

Hurryin Hoosiers By J* Q- Fann * WE ARE NUMBER ONE: How sweet it sounds and I vote to keep on with the same music. Last week I saw the Minnesota game and could hardly wait to get home to write about it but the flu bug stepped on my chest and I could not see the keyboard, let alone write about it, so missed out. That game was a high point and a big milestone in the lives of a couple of off the bench boys,'

especially freshman Don Noordt who impresses people with the possibilities of relief for Steve Downing. Michigan State was mighty hot and for a while it looked like we wouldn’t cut it but we did and then came the big big one at Michigan we don’t get another chance at them. The odds were insurmountable at the end of the half. The injury to John Ritter, the foul situation and two points down said this is the end of the line but Bobby Knight’s “Hurryin Hoosiers” out hurried the Wolverines and I.U. is all alone at the top of the heap. When the 72-73 season is closed it will be known as the year of the frosh or the year of the sub for it has been these two things that have been great. Without the frosh we would have had Green and Ritter at forwards, Downing plus guards John Kamstra and Laskowski with Trent Smock and Abernathy not yet eligible leaving it up to Frank Wilson to swing forward and guard. Jerry Memmering would be playing a lot and' we would be short from the bench. A good ball club but not championship cqntenders. Think what the freshnian record might have been. jCrews and Buckner at the guards are the best varsity pair in the conference. Noordt is first class at center and Abernathy and Smock look good as varsity reserves right now. Morris from Ohio was one of Ohio’s best as a high school senior. Abernathy was not in the scorebook but got 14 in relief and hit the boards against the tough Michigan varsity. You must win them all at home and 4 away to be in good shape in the conference. We have three away from home games tucked in. There is a big chance for a slip with Kamstra injured and out for the season and the injury to John Ritter an unknown quality in his play until it is tried. I think he will return for the Northwestern game.
