In order to give the class some concept of the size of the panthers that used to trouble the early settlers, the teacher, Mrs. Williams borrowed a panther skin from the McFarren family. This animal, shown above on the table, was evidently one of the largest of, its kind. It was shot here in Indiana about 100 years ago. Pioneers often called it a painter. Other names are couger, puma and mountain lion. j Shown with the panther are Kathy Troup, Doug Ruch, Cheryl Skelton, Andy Brown, Brenda Replogle and Rocky Lozano.

The librarians would appreciate it if the mothers, or sisters, who pick up the children at 2:45, would go into the library and get the children. Otherwise some of the little ones want to go to the drugstore, wait outside in the cold, or get upset because no one comes after them when they think they should. The librarians are busy checking out books, helping the children get their coats, boots and mittens ready to put on and cannot watch them outside. Next Saturday stories will be in keeping with Valentine’s Day, as well as a flannelgraph story. We are pleased to add the following books to our memorial collection: “Two From Galilee” by Marjorie Holmes, was given by the Columbian Reading Circle in memory of Mrs. Clifford (Louise) Replogle. “The New Art Os Living”, by Norman Vincent Peale, was given by Mrs. Noble Fisher and son Rex in memory of Miss Naomi Harford. Other new books include: “In Hiding: The life Os Manuel Cortes,” by Ronald Fraser; “One Woman’s Liberation,” by Shirley (Mrs. Pat) Boone; “At Least We Were Married,” (a non-fiction novel) by Terry C. Thomas; “The Astrologers And Their Creed”: An historical outline, by Christopher Mclntosh; “I Love you, Irene,” by Mac Kinlay Kantor, Pulitzer Prize winner in Letters; “Great Short Stories Os The World,” published by Reader’s Digest; “Divorce And Annulment In The 50 States,” by Michael Mayer; “Cook It Quick”: 203 delicious half-hour recipes, by Arthur Hawkins.
included a taffy pull, churning of butter, making of bread, ice cream, apple bobbing, candle dipping, square dancing, Indian dancing and other games. Mothers provided food pioneers might have eaten, such as venison and rabbit, for a feast and the day ended with a peace treaty.
