WOWO Aces to play Wawasee teachers

WOWO’s Air Aces from the popular Fort Wayne radio station will face the faculty of Wawasee high school in a benefit basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. The game will be played at Wawasee high school. “The hotshots of the hardcourt” once again will be led by •Bob Sievers and Jack Underwood. Playing personnel include air personalities Stu Collins, Listo Fisher and Calvin Richards and news editors Dugan Fry, Jerry Hoffmann, Jay Johnson and Art Saltsberg. “The Black-and-Blue Brigade” doesn’t pretend to set the world on fire with basketball skills but they are proud of their record of raising over $85,000 for high school projects in the last six years. The boys are accepting this project as a means of financing their state championship soil judging team when they travel to the national contest in Oklahoma in April. All proceeds of advance and game night sales of tickets will be used for school projects and organizations. A ticket booth is also being set up at all January home basketball games including the one against Whitko on Friday night. The Wawasee Letterman’s club will provide the visiting Air Aces with a cheering section and outstanding cheerleaders. An exciting Warrior pep band will tune up the instruments and keep the gym jumping as the fabulous Faculty Flops swing into action. A preliminary game will feature

Wawasee hosts first co-ed swim meet The Wawasee Warrior and Warriorette swim teams will host the co-educational swim meet in northern Indiana on Thursday, Jan. 25, at 6:30 p.m. with the New Prairie swim teams. The meet will begin with the girls swimming the 200 yard medley relay with the boys following with their relay. The meet will alternate boys and girls events through 24 events and will finish with the boys 400 free style relay.

Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz named 1972 'King of Sports'

Olympic gold medalist Mark Spitz has been named to receive the 1972 “King of Sports” award during the Mermaid Festival next summer. '. ABC sportscaster Chris Schenkel, chairman of the board of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, has announced that Spitz accepted the award and will be glad to cooperate in a world wide “King of Sports’’ career awards Camelot youth program jointly sponsored by Kiwanis International service clubs and the International Palace of Sports, Inc., a youth foundation which Schenkel also heads. In a nation-wide ballot of the sportscasters and sportswriters to select the world’s competitor in all sports whose likeness on a 1972 “King of Sports” commemorative medal would be most cherished by the public and by the youth of today, Spitz received 567 votes of the 1,823 cast. Pittsburg Pirate outfielder Roberto Clemente, who died in a plane crash on December 31, was second with 396; and golfer Jack Nichlaus placed third with 276. Others receiving 10 or more votes were Johnny Bench, 39; Bobby Orr and Steve Carlton, 32 each; Dan Gable, 25; Bobby Fischer, 22; Rodger Staubach, 21; Larry Brown, 16; Johnny Rodgers and Earl Morrall, 11 each; and Frank Shorter, 10. Wawasee Prep takes Saturday’s game 79-62

On Saturday night, Wawasee Prep journeyed to Hamilton and Came back a winner, 79-62. With the win, the Lakers pushed their record to 6-7 for the year. Hamilton is now 9-6 on the campaign. The Lakers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and were never headed in the game. At the end of the first quarter, Prep led 18-10. The Lakers held its eight-point lead throughout the second quarter, at times stretching its margin to 11. At the half,

Stan Scott catches a sailfish Stanley Scott of r 3 Syracuse has two citations from the Islamorada fishing tournament sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Islamorada, Florida Keys, Fla. They certify that he caught a sailfish weighing 35 pounds on November 11. In the interest of good sportsmanship, Scott released the fish after the catch was reported to the Chamber of Commerce. Cromwell school closed for repairs The elementary school at Cromwell was closed due to boiler trouble. Students did not attend Friday. Students reported as usual on Monday.

Badskey, International President of Kiwanis and a director of the sports foundation, reports that the youth program will be launched at the beginning of the next school year and has the potential to provide millions in career awards to deserving young people. He reports there are approximately 6,000 Kiwanis service clubs throughout the world and that each may voluntarily provide a minimum of SSOO award to a “Knight and-or Lady” in furtherance of his or her education or career.

The Lakers were led in scoring by Sylvester Allen and Greg Anderson who shared high point honors with 22-points each. In addition, Allen pulled down 16rebounds and blocked five shots. Frank Hunckler also scored in double figures, adding 13-points. Prep returns to action this week end with two away games. On Friday night, Prep goes to Burr Oak, Mich. On Saturday night, the Lakers will play Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, at the Luers gym.
