Wawasee falls to Warsaw matmen

Warrior matmen suffered their first NLC defeat at the hands of host Warsaw Tigers 30-16 in Tuesday night action. The Tigers weren’t the only foes of the Warriors Tuesday. Veteran Grapplers Dan Doll, Randy Lewallen and Joe Melendez had all been eliminated from competition by earlier bouts with flu and injuries. However, Warsaw grapplers weren’t exactly handing out sympathy cards. Warrior Dave Doll gave Wawasee a three point lead by decisioning Eggleston 7-0 at 100 pounds. Freshman Ron Beer put up a battle before loosing to veteran Leedy at 105 pounds, 4-0. At 114 pounds, Paul Dye put the Warriors back in the winning column by blanking out his opponent Kousins of Warsaw 10-0. Chip Dye, wrestling up a weight class, found his competitor ready for action. The experienced Dye, however, escaped with a 5-4 victory and gave the Warriors a 10-3 lead. At 128 pounds Mark Vanlaningham led Kralis 4-3 going into the final stanza. Kralis capitalized on a Warrior error and picked up an 8-4 decision. Bill Butt at 132 pounds gave McCleary a scare in the third period and almost pulled an upset. McCleary, however, escaped with a 4-3 decision. First year wrestler Chuck Rapp was a 5:51 victim of Ted Pinnick’s four-year experience, at 138 pounds. At 147 pounds, newcomer Doug Brown found himself on the short end of a 4-0 decision. Wawasee’s Brad Lemberg broke the Tiger’s win streak by

decisioning Warsaw’s Burr 5-2. At 169 pounds, Bob Bauman just - wasn’t “with it” and fell to Records on a 6-2 decision. A determined Warrior Gary Francis wasn’t accepting defeat and proved it to his. Warsaw opponent, Troxell, by decisioning him 5-0 at 179 pounds. Following the usual forfeit at 185 pounds, Wawasee’s Walter Leach battled Warsaw standout Jack Summe on even terms before succumbing to a 5-3 decision. Jordan’s Jr. Grapplers posted a 36-21 decision over the Tiger Cubs. Winners for the Jr. Warriors included: Baldwin, 100 pounds, pin at 2:52; Wilkey, 107 pounds, 10-0 decision; Kell, 114 pounds, 15-6 decision; Glon, 121 pounds, 16-0 decision; Hoerr, 128 pounds, forfeit; G. Northern Lakes Conference wrestling powerhouse Manchester was almost the victim of a fired-up Warrior squad. Wawasee grapplers replaced excuses and inexperience with guts and determination and Manchester barely escaped the combo with a 26-23 score. The Warrior six point forfeit was again the real villian. Once again Wawasee’s Dave Doll got the Warriors off to a fine start with a 9-2 decision over Manchester’s Jarrett, at 100 pounds. Ron Beer battled to a 2-2 draw at 107 pounds with French of Manchester. At 114 pounds, Chip Dye got the Warrior fans to their feet with a quick pin over Aughinbaugh at 1:34. This gave Wawasee an 11-2 lead. Jon Glon at 119 pounds came alive in the third period to make

Bill Butt was outhustled in a fast-paced match against tough undefeated Smith of Manchester at 132 pounds 6-1. Chuck Rapp lost an 8-2 decision to Manchester’s Hunter at 140 pounds. At 147 pounds, Warrior Doug Brown broke Manchester’s winning track and posted a convincing 11-4 decision over Safford of Manchester. Brad Lemberg found the going “rough” as he fell victim to Manchester’s Overmeyer in a 137 decision at 157 pounds. At 169 pounds, Bob Bauman rekindled the Warrior fire by decisioning his talented foe Red Day 8-6. Gary Francis earned “Warrior of the Week” honors by upending Manchester’s Ogden at 5:17, at 179 pounds and put the Warriors back in the lead 23-20. After Manchester collected their forfeit at 185 pounds, they re-captured the lead 26-23. One match remained — the victor would emerge the winner. Heavyweight action brought the fans to their feet. Walter Leach battled to a 5-5 draw, and the Warriors fell short of their upset bid. The Warriors, now 3-2 in NLC and 4-5-1 overall, face a crucial week. Wawasee travels to Bremen 6:30 Tuesday and host a re-scheduled match against Plymouth Thursday at 6:30. If the Warriors can maintain the caliber of performance they gave against Manchester, coupled with the expected return of talented veterans Dan Doll, Randy Lewallen and Joe Melendez to the line-up, they could make a serious bid for tote NLC crown. The NLC tourney will be held Saturday, Jan. 27, at Manchester. The three sessions will start at 9, 12:30 and 2:30. Warrior reserves moved their mark to a 9-1 season with a 33-16 victory over the Jr. Squires. Posting wins for the Warriors were — Baldwin, forfeit at 100 pounds; Wilkey, 11-5 dec. at 107

Jimtown opened the fourth quarter with a quick bucket, but Fidler and Smith each connected and kept the Warriors in control. Jimtown narrowed the margin to 52-48 with 2:30 remaining. Smith again hit from outside, but the Jimmies came back with a basket to keep within four. This time Hamilton hit a clutch basket and gave Wawasee a 56-50 lead with less than two minutes to go. The Warriors held on and ended with a 60-55 triumph. In junior varsity action, the Warriors were beaten by Jim-
