Two bomb scares at West Noble school
There were two bomb scares at West high school last week. The first came on Monday with the second call being made on Wednesday. The call on Monday came shortly after 3 p.m. Since it was almost time for school to be dismissed little attention was called to the call. The second call came at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday. The fire alarm
Murder suspects from Ligonier Three men, residents of Parkview trailer court in Ligonier, have been arrested as suspects in the murder of Henry Mook of Goshen, on January 14. Mook worked as a night watchman at the Keene Products plant at Middlebury and was beaten and stabbed to death while at work there. The Robert L. Williams, 28; his brother, Steven W. Williams, 22; and Willard L. Kimball, 111, 18, also worked at the plant. Kimball is a half brother to the Williamses. They came to Ligonier from New Madrid, Mo., about three years ago. The men are being held in the Elkhart county jail and a hearing is set for Wednesday, 24. They turned themselves iif to the state police at Ligonier at 11 a.m. Thursday. Kimball and the Williams - brothers reportedly went to Alabama after the murder but returned to this area later. The school was searched by members of the state police, officials from the school and teachers. No bomb was found. The police report they have several clues and are continuing their investigation.
formation: ■ The purpose of BPW is to elevate the standards for women in business professions, to promote interest, to bring about a spirit of cooperation, to extend opportunities through education along lines of industrial, scientific and vocational activities. Among the projects of the local club are the nursing home project, ring award to a junior girl at West Noble, memorial funds and a tea for West Noble senior girls. Activities are both charitable and for education and pleasure. BPW has dinner meeting Ligonier Business and Professional Womens club held its dinner meeting at Bellman’s case Thursday night with Mrs. Richard Summerville, Mrs. Tom Arnold and Mrs. Geraldine Kesler as hostesses. New members, Mrs. Dorothy McFarren and Mrs. Denise Galloway, were welcomed into the club. Mrs. Paul Stiffner, who represents the BPW as activities cO-ordinator at the Wolf Lake nursing home, gave a report on her progress. Mrs. Everett Elijah, chairman of the ways and means committee, gave a tentative outline of plans for the future. Mrs. Roy Cory gave the program of the evening concerning membership and objectives of BPW. Four from West Noble to Europe West Noble music students Lori Bitner, Tom Fausnaugh, Mary Lou Miller and Bob Franks, will have the privilege of touring Europe next summer with “’Die Sounds Os Hope ” The tour is an annual event with a different group of young people each year. It is under the direction of Varner Chance of Wawasee high school. Students will be seeking sponsors from local clubs and organizations. 4-H enrollment January 30 The Perry Pacesetters boys dub and Perry Busy Bees girls club will hold a combined enrollment meeting in the community room of the American State Bank on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m. All boys and girls wishing to join the 4-H program are invited to at- ; tend. Any boy or girl who is 10 years old during this calendar year is eligible to join. Parents will also be welcome at Tuesday’s mfeeting. Persons wishing additional information may contact Mrs. Phil Stout. West Noble men's gym class begins Hie West Noble high school physical education program for men began Monday, Jan. 22, at the West Noble high school gym. Classes will be under the direction of Ric Shaekel and will be meeting on the following dates from 8-10 p.m. on January 29; February 5,12,19 and 26; March 5, 12, 19 and 26. Anyone desiring further information may contact the school. ‘Starve In’ raises *4,200 A hospital in Haiti will receive $4,200 thanks to Elkhart District United Methodist youth. From 8 p.m. January 12 until noon on January 14, 180 youth starved themselves at the Epworth Forest camp. Each person who attended the “Starve In” asked someone to sponsor them on an hourly rate. For instance, if a sponsor pledged five cents an hour and the person starved for the entire 40 hours, the sponsor would be paying $2. To keep the youth’s mind off of eating, there were group activities, films, games, ice skating and long walks. Young people participating from this area included Delores Sterner, Cheryl Stoner, Barbara Martin, Jerry Rhinesmith, Susie Armstrong, Larry Lynch, Robert Replogle, Randy Gorsuch, Jim Davidson and Dave Keiffer.
NuYorkers dub has meeting, Hie NuYorkers Homemakers dub met January 10 in the home of Mrs. Elaine Mangus. The meeting was opened in the usual form. Mrs. Adrian Lortie introduced two guests, Mrs. Carl Lortie and Mrs. Ruth Ann Stigans, two of the officers of the new homemakers dub in Noble county. She also announcedpthat the dub is the mother cjno for this new dub. If r they have any problems or questions during the year the new dub will ask the NuYorkers. A guest, Mrs. Linda Isaac, was introduced to the dub members by Mrs. Elaine Mangus. Later Mrs. Isaac became a new member. Roll call was answered by 16 members and three guests on a New Year’s resolution that they hope to keep this year. Mrs. Marilyn McClish read the thought of the month. The secretary’s report was read by Mrs. Martha Ott and approved by the club. The club elected a new treasurer, Mrs. Catherine Mawhorter, and she read the treasurer’s report for December. Program books for 1973 were handed out and each member filled in her book with the hostess, co-hostess, devotions and lesson leaders. Mrs. Tillie Busche read a poem entitled, “If I Had Only” for devotions. It was announced the training center in Albion is open from 8 to 4 daily and groups are welcome to take tours of the facility. The health and safety lesson, “How to Detect Vision Problems in Young Children,” was given by Mrs. Lexie Gorsuch. The president reminded the members to remember their secret pals during the year. All members repeated the club collect for the closing. The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served by the hostess, Mrs. Elaine Mangus and co-hostesses, Mrs. Lexie Gorsuch and Mrs. Edith Lortie. Attend training classes in Rome City Mrs. Audrey Stiffner of Ligonier and Mrs. Mary Glass of Albion attended the training session and workshop for nursing home directors at Knepp Springs Sanitarium, Rome City, Tuesday. Mrs. Stiffner and Mrs. Glass have been working in this program at the Wolf Lake nursing home. Chatterbelles meet Tuesday Chatterbelles Homemakers Extension club met Tuesday night in the home of Mrs. William Hite. Roll call was answered with a New Year’s resolution. Mrs. Jerry Branham read the thought of the month and devotions, “You Can Be A Blessing”, was given by Mrs. Robert Lortie. Membership cards were completed and tickets passed out for the Noble county fish fry to be held in the East Noble gymnasium on January 31. Kappa Sigma Tau sorority has meeting Kappa Sigma Tau Sorority met Thursday night at the home of Mrs. John Firestone with Mrs. Irv Dobrunst as co-hostess.
