OBITUARIES
Rev. George Deaton Services were held Tuesday for Rev. George Deaton, 88, brother of Sherman Deaton of Syracuse. Death came Friday morning at the Timbercrest Home, North Manchester, following an illness of two years. He was a retired minister and affiliated with the Eel River Church of the Brethren at North Manchester. Born in Claypool to Jacob and Amelia (Cauffman) Deaton on June 2, 1884, he was united in marriage in 1907 to Edith Leckron who preceded him in death in 1947. He was married to Eva Krkier in 1950 and she passed away in 1962. Survivors include two sons, Granville of Albion and Donald, Decatur; one daughter, Mrs. Homer (Lucile) Graffis of North Manchester; two other brothers; four sisters; three grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren. Interment was in Eel River cemetery. Ray Fleischauer Funeral services were held Monday for Ray Fleischauer, 80, of- 512 North Branch street, Syracuse. Death came on Friday at the Veterans Research hospital, Chicago, Hl., following an illness of two years. Mr. Fleischauer, former owner of a salvage yard at Syracuse, was bom at Cabery, 111., on December 3, 1892, a son of John and Phebe (Workley) Fleischauer. His marriage to the former Viola Katherine Cormican took place September 21, 1921, and she survives. J A resident of Kosciusko county most of his life, Mr. Fleischauer moved to Syracuse in 1940. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army with World War I and a member of the Syracuse American Legion. In addition to the widow, he is survived by one son, Ernest Fleischauer of Goshen; two grandchildren, Roger of Elkhart and Mrs. Richard (Cheryl)

Edith Sawyer Funeral services will be held at the Mishler funeral home in Milford at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) for Mrs. Ransom (Edith) Sawyer, 70, r 1 Nappanee. Mrs. Sawyer died at her residence at 10:55 p.m. Sunday after a lengthy illness. She was born in Union township, Elkhart county on March 9, 1902 to John and Susie (Ellinger) Stuckman and was a resident of the Gravelton community. She and Ransom S. Sawyer were married in Milford on October 4, 1919. Surviving with the husband are one son, Lawrence (Bud) Sawyer of Waubee Lake; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Freida) Elliott of Milford ; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Rev. Clarence Fike of the Turkey Creek Church of the Brethren will officiate and burial will be in Union Center cemetery northeast of Nappanee. Mrs. W. W. Kercher Services were held Monday for Mrs. Emily Kercher, 84, r 1 6 Goshen and stepmother of Mrs. Robert (Betty Jean) Deahl of Syracuse. She was found in her home around 7 p.m. on Thursday by Mr. and Mrs. Max Kercher and death was thought to have been from a stroke. The widow of horticulturist W. W. Kercher, she was born at LaPorte on July 7, 1888, a daughter of Henry and Helena Knott. She was married May 2, 1910 to Walter H. Wirth who passed away January 20,1935. On November 20, 1937, she W. W. Kercher and he died May 14, 1962. Mrs. Kercher was a member of Trinity Lutheran church. Also surviving are one son, Donald Wirth of Elkhart; one stepson, Max Kercher, Gashen; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Marie E. Brekke Word has been received of the death of Marie E. Brekke, sister of Mrs. Julia May of Milford. She died in her sleep on January 7 at Rest Haven in Independence, Mo. Miss Brekke resided with her sister at Milford for 15 months a few years ago. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. January 10 in Independence, Mo.

Ray E. Walters Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday for Ray E. Walters, 80, 522 North Madison St., Nappanee, brother of Jay D. Walters of Milford. Burial was in the Union Center , cemetery. Death came on Tuesday at his home following a brief illness. Mr. Walters had served as Nappanee city clerk far five years, had retired from the South Bend office of Internal Revenue and since his retirement had been a public accountant. He was a member of the Nappanee United Methodist church, Indiana State Board of Public Accountancy, a 50 year member of the Nappanee lodge 566 F & AM, 50 year member of the Nappanee lodge 155 RAM, 50 year member Nappanee Order of Eastern Star 367, past grand patron of the Indiana Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, member of the Grand Chapter RAM, and the Scottish Rite of South Bend, Knight of York Cross of Honour Priory No. 8, Goshen Commandery 50KT, South Bend Shrine dub, Mizpah Temple, Fort Wayne and the Bashor Council 15 R & FM. Mr. Walters was born on June 18, 1892 to Frank and Sarah J. (Hartman) Walters in the same house in which he died. He was united m marriage to Ethel Keys on February 28, 1915 and she survives. Surviving with the widow and brother is one son, Julian R. of Hammond; two daughters, Mrs. Willodene Kelley, Monterey Park, Calif., Mrs. Lyell (Evelyn) Lehman, Union, Mich.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Streeter, Elkhart and Mrs. Hilda Koontz of Indianapolis. Mrs. William Hartter Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday for Mrs. Willianl Hartter, 80, 409 West Albany St., Peoria, 111., stepmother of Elmer Hartter of Milford. Interment was in the Parkview cemetery at Peoria. Death came at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Saint Francis hospital, Peoria. Mrs. Hartter was born on June 10, 1892 to Nathan and Mary Steffen. She was united in marriage to William Hartter on October 12,1933 and he preceded her in death at Milford on December 21, 1961. She was a member of the Sheridan Road Apostolic Christian church at Peoria. Mrs. Hartter had moved from the Milford community to the Peoria community 10 years ago. Surviving with the stepson are three other stepsons, Lawrence, South Bend, Earl, Phoenix, Ariz., Harold, Peoria, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grand-children; one brother, Ed Steffen, Goodfield, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Persida Rocke, Mrs. Alice Funk, both of Eureka, 111. Mrs. John E. Emmert Funeral services were held Monday for Mrs. Leia Emmert, 76, r 2 Syracuse. She passed away early Saturday morning at
Goshen nursing home where she had been a patient since July 18 of last year. Mrs. Emmert was born on March 16, 1896 in LaGrange county, a daughter of Levi and Carrie Chiddister. On February 17, 1917 she was united in marriage to John E. Emmert and he preceded her in death in 1958. She was a member of the Richville United Methodist church. Survivors include one son, John J. Emmert of Syracuse; three grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Aldo Simpson of Goshen and Mrs. Edith Fern Maines, Elkhart. Burial was in Crown cemetery at Millersburg. William F. Ponko Death claimed William F. (“Bunk”) Ponko Sunday at 10:25 p.m. in the Goshen hospital. He had been ill far some time. Mr. Ponko was bom in Goshen on February 25, 1888 to William F. and Josephine (Krutz) Ponko. He had resided with his niece Mrs. Robert (Julia) Reed of Milford for the past 33 years. In his younger days he had been active in baseball, playing for the Goshen Grays and the House of David team. Surviving are three children, Floyd of Mentor, Ohio, William F. of Elkhart, and Mrs. Al (Mary Louise) LaDoev of Elkhart; 10 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Boyd (Louise) Bitner of Goshen. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Otto and Fred and one sister, Agnes Markle. Services were held at a funeral home in Elkhart at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) with Rev. T. P. Kalkwarf of the Trinity Lutheran church in Goshen officiating. Burial was in Rice cemetery at Elkhart. Edward L. Burson Word has been received of the passing of Edward L. Burson, 65, on January 16 at 7 p.m. in Altoona, Pa., where he had resided for the past several years. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Burson formerly of Papakeechie Lake, Syracuse, he is survived by two brothers, Alfred of Papakeechie Lake and Manistique, Mich., and Ralph, Hollidaysburg, Pa.

Mrs. Stephen Rodgers and daughter of Leesburg were dismissed from the Whitley County hospital early this week. (Miss) Hilda Ruch of r 2 Milford entered Elkhart hospital on January 11 for observation and possible surgery. She is in room 319. Carlton Jones of r 2 Milford entered the Parkview hospital at Fort Wayne on January 11 and was kept in intensive care until Monday. He is out of intensive care and improving. Mrs. Eugene Sauder, r 4 box 365-A, Elkhart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Graff of Milford was released from the Elkhart hospital last week following surgery on January 9.
