tffIZINJO£ AROUND * 7 Mrs. Luseal Settlemeyer of Syracuse and Roanoke winged her way to Hawaii on Monday for a two-month stay. If one chanced to look skyward Saturday evening, one might have seen the large circle around the moon, suggesting, according to old timers, a change in the weather. According to the legend, the change will come in as many days as the number of stars within the circle (which incidentally numbered one) thus came the snow Sunday night and ice covered roads making driving hazardous Monday morning. Bahaman travelers are back with many tales to tell. K Jack and Carol Darr were “royally” welcomed with Christmas lights lighting the entire neighborhood, plus a large welcome home sign and another showing we had 30 degrees, Ha Ha. The Jerry Herbisons were not quite so royally welcomed as a breaking and entering was discovered by neighbors Saturday with a number of large items being taken, furniture slit and the house ransacked. Did you know the drop-off laundry service and send out dry cleaning at the Wawasee laundromat has been “phased” out and a new look will be evident. Ron Vestal, new owner last year, has been busy tearing out partitions in the west room making way for more coin operated machines to be installed. Also in the “phasing” out were longtime and faithful employees under Rodney and Frances Koontz, Kay Robie and Alice Miller, with one and perhaps both
looking for other positions. John Foster Call is the new architect in the office above the bank. Bank employee Theo Thomas and gal Friday, Freda Rinker, are also located above the bank. A new project at Wawasee Prep, according to spokesman Col. Joe Gray, is to secure funding for scholarships to take care of around 20 Nicaraguans at the Prep school. Gray said Friday, a $3,000 grant had already been received toward this project. Two Nicaraguans were in attendance at the Prep school when the earthquake occurred, both families were reported alright, however, one youth returned home and another has come to Prep. All Managuan schools, with exception of one, were destroyed and the one remaining has been turned into a hospital. Former Syracusean Wiley (Bill) Spurgeon, now editor and publisher of the Pulaski County Journal, had an interesting and amusing editorial in the December 27 issue on train trips of winters past. Included in his memorable trips were rides on the Baltimore and Ohio Capital Limited from Syracuse, often in the years 1967 to 1971, to Washington or Chicago. ’ Being a “regular” he quipped Uiis eventually entitled him to dine on fresh shrimp or sweet corn (in season) as put on by relatives of the conductors when the eastbound train stopped at Garrett for servicing. And, since they were not standard club car fare, to make our own whiskey sours — provided we brought our own lemons, Spurgeon added. Uiis train survived until the advent of Amtrak, just last year. One of the best photos to come out of the recent NECC basketball tournament at West Noble appeared on the front page of the Cromwell Advance last week. It was of little five-year-old Pam Smoots, snapped by Jim Wallace as Pam was giving her best es-
forts for her home Chargers. It was cake and ice cream at the NIPSCo office Friday afternoon late for Larry and Pat Claybaugh. The reason: Larry, for the past seven years a working foreman for the company’s Syracuse office, was leaving to begin his new job as line crew foreman at Goshen. Larry is a Goshen native, where he was an outstanding basketball and football star, and will be right at home there. It should be noted, however, that the Claybaughs will continue to live on East Henry street in Syracuse. _ North Webster’s Mermaid Festival officials have already made overtures to Governor Otis Bowen to be a Parade Marshal at this year’s festival gala. Speaking early, they Mope to get the popular governor, as they did Governor Harold Handley on several occasions. Tall, persuasive Gary Eastlund is festival chairman, along with Elson Wilson, and it’s a good bet they’ll get the job done. Gary’s wife Barb is again secretary, and the real workhorse for the festival. Joe Todd has purchased the road 13 house known as the former George Lamm home, and plans to convert it into offices, one for his Todd Realty and others for lease. He and Barb planned to hold a contest for a suitable name for their new “complex,” but gave up the idea. Joe says, “The only thing we came up with was ‘The House in The Village’ and we weren’t exactly sold on that.” Chet Elder is a modest man. He said he didn’t take down the town’s Christmas decorations all by himself, as an item in this column last week implied. He had a lot of help, he says, particularly Joe Hughes and other Syracuse firemen. Chet says, “I want those fellows to get the credit. I might want to use them again to put up decorations.” Busy, busy, busy, was the ol’ town on Saturday what with Syracuse hosting an eighth grade basketball tournament between Syracuse, Milford, North Webster and Central Noble, and Wawasee high acting as hosts to

Central Noble wins Sth grade tourney
Central Noble outran host Syracuse in the finals of the Lakeland junior high four-way tourney Saturday, 36 to 24. Central Noble’s connecting on 12 of 15 free throws in the game and pouring in 17 points in the second quarter proved too much for the Yellow Jackets. Keith Cripe led the Jackets with 14 points but none of his teammates could get more than three. The taller opponents dominated the boards and when Syracuse did try and come back in the third quarter they missed seven straight close-in shots to the speech tournament. The Lakeland Youth Center director opened facilities there for about 75 to 100 junior high students from 11:30 to 1:30 with free sloppy joes and potato chips. WE TALKED with Eldred Mabie of Syracuse, former owner of the Star Store there, about the old Hickory Lounge building where the Budget Shop was recently located and found that he has purchased the building. He is presently remodeling the building with plans to rent it when the remodeling is completed. He promised to keep us posted.

lose their chance. In the morning games Syracuse defeated North Webster 51 to 23 and Central Noble outscored Milford 49 to 36. Syracuse got off to a fast start in the first quarter against North Webster and increased the margin at each stop. Cripe led the Jackets with 16 points and
