Wrestling Warriors nab two straight victories

The Wawasee wrestling team upped its overall record to 4-3-1 with victories over NLC foe Concord 51-19, Tuesday, and the Whitko Wildcats 41-19, Thursday night. The conference win over Concord gives the Warriors a 3-0 mark in NLC action. Several Warriors posted double wins this week — Dave Doll, Chip Dye, Brad Lemberg, Bob Bauman and Gary Francis. Dave " Doll, at 100 pounds wot by forfeit over Concord and romped over Brumbaugh of Whitko 16-0. At 107 pounds Rot Beer was pinned by Chupp of Concord at 5:51 and was on the short end of a 2-0 score against Smith of Whitko. Chip Dye at 114 pinned Berkey of Concord at 4:49 and collected a forfeit against Whitko. At 121 pounds Jon Glon was decisioned by Martin of Concord 13-0 and by Walters of Whitko 6-2. Undefeated Warrior Dan Doll is temporarily sidelined with the “bug”. At 128 pound action, Mark Vanlaningham won by forfeit over Concord, and Doug Hoerr posted his first varsity victory by pinning his Whitko opponent at 1:47. Bill Butt at 134 pound action _pinned Concord’s Kieter in 3:35. Randy Lewallen battled to a 2-2 draw with Slater of Whitko. In 140 pound action, Warrior Joe Melendez pinned Troyer of Concord at 5:01 and escaped with a 3-3 draw with Whitko’s Carlin. Chuck Rapp, at 147, lost two close decisions to Harris of Concord 6-5 and Collier of Whitko 5-3. For the first time this year the upper weights dominated the victory column. Brad Lemberg, 155 pounds, boosted his record by decisioning Concord’s Shere 7-0 and pinning Whitko’s Engelberth at 5:10. In 169 pound action, Bob Bauman captured back-to-back pins over Concord’s Stevenson at 4:34 and Whitko’s Lancaster at :49. Gary Francis at 177 pounds kept the pressure on Warrior foes by pinning Lopenski of Concord at 4:51 and decisioning

Head - coach Max Servies and the team are trying to improve on last year’s 10-1 season. Thanks to Van Lue and other wrestlers’ efforts, the Little Giants are undefeated with a 3-0 record. Warrior grapplers managed to place six individuals Saturday in the eight-team Goshen invitational. Joe Melendez captured first in the 140 pound weight division; Chip Dye captured second spot at 114; Brad Lemberg placed third at 155. Picking up fourth place honors were Dave Doll, 100 pounds, Doug Hoerr, 128 pounds, and Bob Bauman at 169 pounds. The Warrior cause was hampered by the absence of starters Dan Doll (Goshen invitational champ for the past two years) and Mark Vanlaningham. WHS freshmen stop Elkhart's West Side The Wawasee freshmen wrestling team stopped Elkhart’s West Side last week for thenthird win of the season against one loss. The Warriors won 39-12. Prep Splits ball action Wawasee Prep had an opportunity to push its record to the .500 mark over the week end, but the Lakers fell short. On Friday night, Prep downed Kewanna 78-54 at home, while on Saturday night the Lakers came out on the short end of a 62-58 count at Indianapolis against Indianapolis Latin. Wawasee Prep’s season mark is now 5-7. Prep broke into the winning column ;in the Midland conference with it’s easy victory over Kewanna, a young and inexperienced team. The Lakers’ conference record is now 1-2 for the season. . Prep built up a 46-22 half time lead and coach Rex Yentes played his substitutes throughout the third and fourth quarters. At the end of three quarters, Prep led 67-36. Sylvester Allen led Prep with 21 points and 24 rebounds. Frank Hunckler added 17 to the Laker total, while Otha Wallace chipped in 13. Saturday Action On Saturday night, the Lakers had two bad quarters and two good ones. Unfortunately, the bad ones came at the wrong time in the game. Dye pinned Jimtown’s Reynolds at 2:59 and made quick work of defeating champ Ernsberger with a pin at 1:19. At 155 pounds, Brad Lemberg posted decisions over NorthWood’s Kirkdorger 2-0 and Goshen’s Branson 2-0 to grab third place spot. Wawasee had three fourth place finishers. Latin jumped out to a 16-12 first quarter lead, but the Lakers responded by holding the Cougars to four points in the second quarter, while scoring 19, to lead 31-20. At the end of three quarters, Prep continued to lead 49-42. However, the fourth quarter, the Cougars came to life, while the Lakers seemed to run out of steam. The victory left Latin with a 9-3 mark for the season. Allen again led Prep tossing in 16 points. Wallace added 13 points and Hunckler contributed 12. Wawasee Prep will return to action on Saturday night against the Hamilton Marines at Hamilton. Wildcats down Chargers The West Noble Chargers traveled to Whitko Friday night to suffer their fourth defeat of the season. The Chargers two leading scorers, Dan .Rarick and Dave Vanette, got into foul trouble early in the game and the Chargers were never able to get their offense into gear. The long range bombing of Paul Stahly and the underneath play of Mark Loveless kept West Noble in the game during the first half. Louis Gilbert started the second half by hitting three straight field goals to give the Chargers a one point lead, but Whitko came back to take and maintain the lead for the remainder of the game. A pair of free throws by Mark Matson with six seconds remaining in the game brought the Chargers back to within two points, but Whitko was able to

East Noble glides by Wawasee The East Noble Knights handed the Wawasee Warriors a 78-58 defeat in cage action last Friday night. The Knights, playing on their home floor jumped to an early lead, 8-3 at the midpoint of the first stanza and stretched to a 18-9 lead by the first stop. In the second quarter the Warriors stayed with them and were only down 33-26 at half, but Wawasee was outscored 23-14 in the third period and fell back 56-40. East Noble then coasted to a final 78-58 victory. The Warriors had trouble on the boards having 27 rebounds to East Noble’s 50. Dave Hamilton and Mark Smith were in double figures for Wawasee with 18 and 11 respectively and 10 rebounds apiece. East Noble had four players in double figures, Kostielney poured in 23 and Martin 19, while Donat hit for 15 and Wappes for 12. The Warrior B-team got off to a slow start trailing 11 at the first stop and was back 28-13 at half. They played them evenly in the second half and the score ended 52-36. This week the Warrior squads will be traveling to Jimtown for a Friday night contest against the Jimtown Jimmies.
