ONE YEAR AGO Syracuse postmaster Ernest E. Bushong, 67, died unexpectedly around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, while en route to the hospital after becoming ill at his home a short time earlier. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Searfoss of r 1 and Sally and Debra returned last week end from a week’s visit with the Fred Stockinger family in Texas. A newspaper delivery boy, young Gary Brown, was robbed of $8.35 in newspaper monies during the early evening hours Monday while making delivery rounds. Jesse Botts of r 1 and former Millersburg resident, observed his 91st birthday anniversary on January 2. A double ring ceremony Saturday evening, Dec. 18, at the Temple Methodist church, Millington, Tenn., united in marriage Miss Colleen Egbert of lowa and Paul R. Coy of Syracuse and the U.S.jNavy. The Tom Roderick family of Bloomington, 111., spent the holidays in the Delbert Roderick and William Motts homes. FIVE YEARS AGO Harry D. Alfrey, Jr., general manager of the Fred Gentsch, Inc., plant at Newton, Kansas, has been elected vice president of the mobile home furniture manufacturing company. Mrs. Bud Speicher and Randy Jo of Frankfort are visiting in the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Brown and Mrs. Mary Brown. The Syracuse post office now has a new six cent stamp bearing the face of former president Franklin D. Roosevelt. Archie Laughlin, 52, was pronounced dead after being pulled from his flaming one room house last Thursday night. Mr. and Mrs. Burdoine Real were injured last Wednesday when their 1963 Ford wagon was struck in the rear by a 1967 Mack tractor on U.S. 30 near S.R. 9. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Nusbaum have returned from a vacation trip to California. The Eldon Tippen family has returned to Richmond, Calif., following a visit in the William Cable home. Airman first class Gary Spry is home cm leave from his base in California. TEN YEARS AGO The annual meeting of the bank stockholders was held on January 8. Loyal Temple 130 of Pythian Sisters met January 2 for the first meeting of the new year. A-B Edgar Anglemeyer is being assigned to Sheppard air base in Texas as a finance statistical data specialist. Mrs. M. Cecillia Oatzes, 81, died Wednesday in Robert Long hospital, Indianapolis. Mrs. Carroll Koble was admitted early this week to Goshen hospital. A suit has been filed in Kosciusko circuit court by the bank against the town of Syracuse for the sum of $14,475 on a complaint the town owes the sum of $13,654.33 on a note plus interest from May 15, 1962. Rev. and Mrs. Chester Carpenter celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on January 6 with over 200 friends attending an afternoon reception.

Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Rink of Elkhart and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johnson, Goshen, were Sunday evening callers in the Walter Ritter home. A “loose” freight car on the side track of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad struck the rear of an auto driven by Mrs. Floyd Disher about 8 a.m. December 31 in town, however, no one was injured. Some 35 to 40 young persons were ice skating Sunday on Syracuse Lake. Robert Smith of Muncie spent the week end with Mrs. Smith and two sons in the C. W. Walter Kegg of Ligonier will open a barber shop and beauty parlor on Februairy 1 in the basement of the Bowser building on Main street. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hinderer celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary on January 8. The Misses Edna and Eva Yoder returned this week from a visit with relatives at Peoria and Chicago, 111. Mrs. Herbert Stump hostess for WMS The Woman’s Missionary j Society of the First Brethren church of Milford met Thursday evening in the home of Mrs. Herbert Stump. Mrs. Arlo Beiswanger conducted a short business meeting. She announced there would be an all-day sewing and salad bar at the church on January 17. Mrs. Lois Jessop was in charge of the program for the evening. She gave the topic “The Tears of Jesus” and the group read the song “Be Still My Soul.” Mrs. Jessop also reviewed the booklet “The Strangest Thing Happened” by Ethel Barrett. This booklet is used by a Sunday school class and, features various stories of the Bible in modern children’s language. As an example Mrs. Jessop read the story of the beginning of Isreal. Refreshments ware served by the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Jessop. The next meeting will be in the home of Mrs. Ronald Brown on February 1.
