January is month for WHS girls basketball
January is the month the Wawasee high school girls basketball team will be taking to the hardwood. The girls have a full schedule with eight games to be played during the current month. Their first game of the new season was played on Monday night against Columbia City in the Wawasee high school gym. Home Tonight They will be home again tonight (Wednesday) as they battle a visiting Knox team at 6 p.m.

Warrior, Redskin stand-off ends with 28-28 score
Wawasee grapplers went to Goshen last Thursday evening ■prepared for battle and that’s what ensued. The action filled encounter ended in a 28-28 draw, and gave the Warriors a 2-3-1 over-all mark. A six point peace offering?? in the form of a forfeit at 185 once again saved the Warrior foes. The Warriors dominated the lower weight classes. Dave Doll posted his fifth straight victory with a 9-4 decision over Martin of Goshen at 100 pounds. At 107 pounds Ron Beer, substituting for ailing regular Paul Dye, earned “Warrior of the Week” honors by pinning his Goshen opponent in 2:48. Chip Dye boosted his record to 5-1 by decisioning Emsberger 7-2 at 114 pounds. Dan Doll found Hershberger to be a stubborn opponent in the 121 pound weight

class. The match ended in a 2-2 deadlock and gave Dan an overall season mark of 5-0-1. In 128 pound action Mark Vanlaningham (2-3) put up a spirited battle before making a costly last second error which resulted in a pin for Myers with eight seconds remaining in the third period. Randy Lewallen, now 3-2-1 for the season, decisioned Goshen’s Beechy 2-0 at 135 pounds. Bill Butt (0-1-1) was decisioned by Goshen’s Holderread 7-4 in 138 pound action. At 147 pounds Joe Melendez pinned Welsh of Goshen at 3:44 and upped his season mark to 4-1-1. Brad Lemberg, also 4-1-1, struggled to a 6-6 draw with Goshen’s Bransen. Warrior Bob Bauman boosted his mark to 3-2-1 with a 7-5 decision over Mock. Going into the final three weight classes the Warriors were leading 28-13. At 177 pound action Gary Francis put up a good defensive battle that aided in a 40 decision for Miller of Goshen. Goshen collected a six point forfeit at 185 and a pin over Wawasee heavyweight Mark Randall, making his first wrestling appearance, to tie the Wawasee Warriors. The junior grapplers suffered their first setback of the year at the hands of the unbeaten junior Skins 48-18. Forfeits accounted for 18 of Goshen’s points. Winners for Wawasee were Mark Wilkey, 107, pin at 4:21; Doug Hoerr, 128, 10-8 decision; Gary Helman, 132, pin at 3:56; and Larry Helman, 145, 5-0 decision. Wawasee rolls past
Bremen to even record at 6-6
The Wawasee Warriors evened their record at 6-6 with a conference triumph over the Bremen Lions Saturday night for their second conference win. After trailing 14-10 at the first stop, the Lions battled to a 37-37 half time score. In the second half Wawasee came out firing, ripping off ten points before Bremen could connect and taking a 47-37 lead with four minutes to go in the third stanza. Wawasee controlled the rest of the game, which was held on their home court, winding up with a 76-54 victory. Greg Fidler netted 15 points and sophomore Mark Smith enjoyed his best night with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Bremen
Wawasee drops NLC game to Plymouth
Jim Stout had 19 points and 13 rebounds while Tad Chamberlin put in 18 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome thirteenth ranked Plymouth. Plymouth took a first half lead of 43-35 and the Warriors stayed with them through the third quarter, trailing by 8, 57-49. But in the final stanza the Pilgrims pulled away as the well known Bruce Grimm showed his shooting ability. Grimm fired in 30 points, slightly under his 32.4 average, and Aker had 20 for the Pilgrims. The loss' gave Tom Spear’s Warriors a 5-6 record and a 1-3 conference mark. Goshen stops Wawasee swimmers 54 to 41
The Goshen swim team stopped the Warriors 41-54 during a swimming meet held Tuesday at Wawasee. The Warriors received four first place awards and Tom Spearman set a new school record during the night. First places were received by the following: 50 yard free style — Matt Gray 25.8 1 meter diving — Kent Sawyer 178.5 100 yard free style — Greg Ummel 57.4 400 yard free style relay — Greg Ummel, Matt Gray, Mike Grotz and Randy Rich 3:56.3 Tom Spearman’s record was in the 100 yard breast stroke with a time of 1:08.0. Spearman was defeated by Dennis Fult who lowered the pool record to 1:07.2. The Warriors will swim against Elkhart Memorial at Wawasee on January 16. ,

Snowmobile class well attended Approximately 100 youngsters and adults attended the snowmobile class last Wednesday evening at the youth center, whereby 40 youths under the age of 14 passed the written test. Sanctioned by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, officials assisting with the instruction class included conservation officer Earl Money, Elkhart county &>i servation officer Jerry Olinske, Dennis Jones and Douglas Strombeck of the North Webster snowmobile club and lieutenant Warren Swartz of the Elkhart county sheriffs department. 4 Car upsets ' Monday night Damage was estimated at $1,650 Monday night to an auto operated by Dale W.
