Since the story broke about a Hook drug store coming to Syracuse there has been considerable speculation. One report we heard but were unable to get hny confirmation that a McDonald’s was also coming to Syracuse. This we would be inclined to doubt, due to a lack of sufficient traffic flow. One thing we can report with certainty, however, is that the Hook story has generated considerable land interest in the Wawasee Village area around the proposed Hook site. This we get from Harlan Steffen, Todd Realty associate, whose firm handled the land transaction with Hook officials. Steffen says there is real interest in the land on the south side of the Pickwick Road just east of the Hook site. A big ball game coming our way, one yoq’lf want to attend, will be between the WOWO Air Aces and the Wawasee high school faculty, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 6. Tickets are already on sale by WHS FFA boys, according to Dennis Mikesell, FFA advisor. It’s a fund-raiser, to be sure, but it will be a real fun game, too. They hope to pack the 3,400-seat gym. Mikesell says 75 per cent of the gate goes to the faculty fund (out of which $250 goes to cover WOWO team expenses), and 25 per cent goes toward financing the FFA soil judging teams’ trip to the national contest in Oklahoma sometime in April. Remember, WHS had two teams that won in state competition — one second place, and the other fourth place? Now we hear Augsburger’S Food Palace in the Village is planning an addition op the north —about 1,800 square feet — to house a bakery and to provide additional selling area. Anything to this, John? You just have to hand it to West Noble coach Ric Schaekel for

coming through a winner in the 4way holiday basketball tournament here Friday night. Almost no one expected his Chargers to defeat highly favored Whitko, but Whitko never got a look-in. It was a Charger game all the way. What’s more this is Schaekel’s first year at West Noble. Former WN coach Roger Tuggle went to Goshen to coach the Redskins and has had a floperoo of a season on his hands. He shoulda stood in bed ... or at least stayed at West Noble. We heard over the week end that spirited Nancy Prickett has a bad case of the hives, thus dampening prospects of her vacation trip to the Grand Bahamas with some 100 area golfers. The trip has to be one of the best kept local secrets — at least from Nancy. _ She had no idea hubby Tom had signed up for the trip, until Christmas eve. When the two of * them, plus family, returned from the traditional family gift opening with her parents, the Dal Anglins of Clunette, on Christmas eve, Tom gave Nancy an envelope, which turned out to be the first of a 10-station scavenger hunt foray. The final envelope contained a receipt for payment of the 8-dav trip to the balmy Bahamas. Nancy sat down and cried... her lads call it “making ghost faces.”, But the most recent result is a bad case of hives for non-flying Nancy. 7 Two of the slightly younger set, Jerry Claybaugh and. Rusch Mauzy, have" been vacationing in the Virgin Islands. s Jerry returned, home Sunday, but Rusch has extended his stay for an indefinite period. ) Do you take the precaution to remove your keys from your vehicle upon leaving same? From this day on, presumably D. B. will do so. Seems in a hurried trip to the bank Saturday morning, keys were left in his truck and upon emerging from the bank saw his truck being driven away and one just like it in the next parking spot. ' . Driver of the remaining truck was located and several redfaced men chatted. D. B. had his truck back and the-other unidentified gent drove off in the other
vehicle, a borrowed one, of which the rightful owner was undoubtedly glad. Ladies of the Round Table at Syracuse will be holding a 50th anniversary party this month and have been busy sending invitations to past members, however, a plea for HELP was made this week regarding eight individuals and their locations. Those listed included Evelyn Amsler, Rosemary Bailey, Ruth Dreher, Naomi Pyle, Laura Sink, Georgia Cook and Frieda Sarver. Anyone knowing whereabouts of any of these persons is asked to contact Mrs. Clayton Mock, 712 North Huntington street, Syracuse. Purdue-Calumet goalie Rod Weingart was\ voted the most outstanding defbnsive player Sunday after the Indiana AllStars defeated Ohio by 3-1 at Ohio Wesleyan college. v He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Weingart of Gary and grandson of Syracuse’s Mrs. Karl Weingart and Mrs. Ernest Bushong.’ Named to the Indiana All-Star Soccer team in November, the Gary Wallace alumnus made 14 saves and the only goal was scored on his alternate. Wayne Zahr of Goshen scored one goal and made two assists in a game originally scheduled for Saturday. —o— Don’t forget the drug meeting at 7:30 p.m. next Monday in room 300 at the high school with principal Henry Smith as speaker. The public is urged to attend. Three dances, some old time movies and an euchre tournament are included on the agenda for the month at the local youth center according to director Frederick Laskowski. —o — i Local police were seen Monday making a check of parking meters and will again be making regular checks regarding overtime parking, since the holiday season is over. Phyllis Huffer, Mrs. Wallace, will have more time for recuperating now with the closing of Wallie’s Case this week and hopefully will be fully recovered from her recent illness before the May 1 re-opening. Adult farmer program set for 10 weeks in ’73
The Adult farmer program for 1973 has been set for 10 weeks. All meetings will be held at the Wawasee high school vocational agriculture wing at 7:30 p.m, with coffee and refreshments being provided. The first meeting will be next Wednesday, Jan. 8, and will be on fertilizers and chemicals. The program will be presented by Ellsworth Fanning of Shipshewana. The public is invited to attend all the meetings. There is no charge. Other meeting dates and their topics are as follows: January 15 — Fuels and admeeting times on Mondays at the youth center. The Kosciusko County Historical Society held a Sunday afternoon meeting at the new offices of First Charter Insurance Co., as a matter of emphasizing what can be done with old structures in the county. The new First Charter offices are in an old landmark building that has been restored. ■ A suggestion of one KCHS member was that the offices be kept open each Sunday afternoon for visitors. Two WHS grads, now freshmen at Purdue, appear to be doing well. Dal Ummel received his grades last week and found he came up with a 5.5 (or B-plus) average, while Tom Fribley had a 6.0 (or straight A) average, both for the first grading period. Everyone seems interested in knowing who received the low numbered license plates. This is the list Syracuse license branch manager released to this column this week: No. 1, John F. Augsburger; 2, Steve Hearn; 3, Robert Insley; 4, Harry VanHemert; 5, Ralph Oyler; 6, Max McCormick; 7, Bruce Frey; 8, Tom Prickett; 9, Virgil Bobeck; 10, Maurice Dorsey; 11, LaVada Dean; 12, Robert Reed; 13, John B. Chicago Motor Club offers cold weather starting tips
Make certain all accessories are turned off before turning on the ignition key when trying to start your car in cold weather, advises the Chicago Motor ClubAAA. The club’s emergency road service department also offers these cold weather starting hints for motorists: — Resist the temptation to continuously pump the gas pedal when starting your car. — Turn the key and depress the gas pedal to the floor — once — and let it up half way. Don’t grind the starter for more than 30 seconds. If your car doesn’t starting within 30 seconds stop and make repeated attempts, allowing 30 to 45 seconds between tries. — If your carburetor floods — and' you’ll be able tb tell by smelling the raw gasoline — shut off the ignition, push the gas pedal to the floor and hold it there for a full minute. Then with the

Taxpayer wants to know
Dear Editor:* I would like to know why our county highway department has given such poor service this winter in keeping our roads cleared of snow and ice. It would be a big help if they would clean the main roads first and do it early enough for people going to work early.

Present president is Joe Gray; vice president, William Beemer and secretary, Maurice Crow. Present Tuesday night were board president Thomas Prickett, Noble C. Blocker and Darrell Grisamer, and six other interested taxpayers. pedal still on the floor, turn the starter. This procedure allows any excess gasoline to drain through the manifold. Enough fuel usually remains to give you a proper start. — Warm your engine at an idle. Never race a cold engine. The rapid action of internal parts before lubricants are flowing puts severe wear on engine parts. Even these pointers may not work if your battery is not properly charged and your car is not kept tuned. Check your battery often and have a tuneup before each driving season. Spark plugs are an extremely important, and inexpensive, part of your ignition system and should be checked and replaced often. According to manufacturers, a new, fully charged battery has only 60 per cent of its power at 32 degrees, 46 per cent at zero and only 30 per cent at 20 degrees below zero.
Witli a new highway bam and everything to work with, it looks like they could do a better job. Also, I have heard on the radio that members of the department are asking for a raise. They don’t deserve any raise until they give better service than we have received thus far this winter. A Taxpayer
