Soybean day January 10 WES'M LAFAYETTE — Soybeans, a major source of Indiana’s agricultural income, will get the “full treatment” at 1973 Farm Science Days at Purdue university. For the first time in Farm Science Days’ history, a day-long program will be devoted to this important crop. Designated Soybean Day, it will be Wednesday, Jan. 10, in rooms 302-306 of Stewart Center. A feature will be the crowning of Indiana Princess Soya at a luncheon in the Union building west faculty lounge. The morning program, starting at 8:30 o’clock, will cover subjects ranging from varieties to double cropping. Laurel Meade, general sales manager, USDA export marketing service, will speak. Ralph Jackson, executive vice president of the American Soybean Association, will highlight the afternoon session with a discussion of the soybean checkoff. Producers in most southern states and lowa contribute one-half cent a bushel for market development and research. Possibilities for this concept in Indiana will be explored. Directors of Indiana Soybean Growers Association will meet that night and elect 1973 officers. Cafeteria employees enjoy Yule dinner Mr. and Mrs. Neal Cory of r 1 Milford were hosts at a Christmas party Thursday evening at their home. Guests were the Milford elementary and junior high school cafeteria employees. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Moneyheffer, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Haab, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Fox, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Miller and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Yoder. ONE YEAR AGO The Marshall Esteps of Milford have purchased the former Martin Bluckher home at Syracuse Lake. Syracuse firemen will observe an open house on New Year’s Day in observance of the tenth anniversary of the department in it’s present location. Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Beer of r 1 Milford announce the engagement of their daughter, Patricia Sue, to Russell Mikel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Mikel of Syracuse. A summary of a chemical and bacteriological survey of Lakes Wawasee and Syracuse, summer 1971, is given. New town board members to be seated January 1 are Thomas Prickett, Noble C. Blocker, Louis M. Kuilema, Darrell D. Grisamer, Forest A. Smith, Jr., and clerk-treasurer, Mrs. Betty J. Dust. At the December meeting of the Syracuse volunteer fire and first aid department, Robert Penick was re-elected fire chief for the second year and William Pipp is first aid captain. FIVE YEARS AGO The home Christmas decoration at the Steven Hearns, 407 South Main, was judged most original by the Wawasee Area Jaycees and received a $25 savings bond. Mun Foo Wong received his naturalization papers on December 19 in federal district court at Fort Wayne. The engagement of Miss Deborah Lee Leer to Jerry Dean Kirkdorfer is announced with a summer wedding planned. Miss Andrea Arlic became the bride of David Hile in a candlelight service on December 16 at the Syracuse Church of the Nazarene. Mr. and Mrs. Perry L. Frye announce the engagement of their daughter, Carolyn Sue, to James Spencer Wilson. Bill Green is advisor this year for the Syracuse chapter of Future Farmers of America. Mr. and Mrs. Feri A. Rhoads announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Gwyndolin Joy, to Sp 4 Ernest Leitch. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald E. Cramer announce the engagement of their daughter, Marie Ann, to Larry G. Simon. TEN YEARS AGO Joseph Stiefel of Fort Wayne, owner of Stiefel Feed Company which was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning, has announced damage will amount to $130,000. A total of $240 will be divided between the Syracuse and Milford fire departments as a result of the sale this week of the first four 1963 license plates by the Syracuse license branch. Clarence McKibben, 68, died December 25 in Goshen hospital; and Mrs. Anna Miller, 92, died this week. The Saturday night holiday ball sponsored by the SyracuseWawasee Chamber of Commerce drew a big crowd and was considered a success. larry L. Line has returned to his base station at Hawaii following leave here. City employee Charles Dean was overcome by chlorine gas early Monday morning while putting on a new tank for the Syracuse water purifier. Joyce Hapner and Harold Kit son, Jr., exchanged wedding vows Saturday evening at the Syracuse Church of the Brethren. TWENTY YEARS AGO The Indiana Public Service Commission on Monday approved a request of the Syracuse town board for $65,000 issue of bonds for the Syracuse Water Company with which will retire some $20,000 in outstanding bonds and build a new water storage tower in the south part of town plus other improvements. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Elkins celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on December 21 with an open house. The Weatherhead Christmas party was held Sunday afternoon in the Syracuse school gym with 800 in attendance. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Frevert announce the engagement of their daughter, Cynthia, to James Fry. A unique lighting for the season on the road leading past Bonnie Brae Kale Island by the W. E. Longs has attracted much attention. Mrs. Clara Stansbury left Saturday for Chicago, 111., to spend the holidays with the Wayne Stoll family. Colwell is the new worshipful master of lodge. Mr. and Mrs. John T. Riddle were united in marriage 50 years ago December 13. The roof the new high school building is almost completed. Juanita Gushwa was a Thursday evening caller of Esther Zimmerman. Alonzo Rookstool sustained damage to his home when a fire started Saturday evening from the chimney and burned a hole in the roof. Elizabeth Rosson of Champaign, 111., is spending the Christmas holidays with her mother, Mrs. G. H. Ellis. Mr. and Mrs. George Seese celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on December 27. Fem Bunger and family of Goshen spent Christmas with the Perry Bunger family. A new, smaller in size, dollar bill is due for release and distribution in the Syracuse area. No injuries in car-bike mishap No injuries were sustained in a car-bicycle mishap at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Main and Huntington street crossing as the two collided. Driver of the auto was Ora Benson, 75, Syracuse, driving a 1966 Ford. A broken spoke on the Schwinn bicycle ridden by Cindy Brock, 10, r 2 Syracuse, was the only damage sustained. The mishap occurred as Benson turned right at the stoplight and the young Brock girl crossed Indiana 13 at the same time. Mobile home burns at Papakeechie The Syracuse fire department responded to a call from Mrs. Robert Gunn for a mobile home fire at Papakeechie Lake Wednesday afternoon, afterwhich the Cromwell department was called due to it being in Cromwell area. The mobile home is owned by Wilbur Roe and rented to Kenny Richards on r 2 Syracuse. All contents of the home were lost and firemen speculated the fire might have been started from a lighted Christmas tree. No one was at home at the time the blaze was discovered. Larry Elliott is graduate FORT MONMOUTH, N. J. — Army private first class Larry P. Elliott, 19, son of Mrs. Florence E. Elliott of 228 Cardinal Dr., Forrest City, Ark., and Cecil L. Elliott of 710 S. Vernon, Nappanee, recently completed a 32week strategic microwave systems repairman course at the U. S. Army signal center and school at Fort Monmouth, N. J. His training included instruction in the techniques necessary to install, operate and maintain long range microwave radio systems. Pvt. Elliott entered the army in December 1971 and completed basic training at Fort Campbell, Ky. He is a 1971 graduate of Forrest City (Ark.) high school. Fellowship class has Yule party The Fellowship class of the Syracuse Church of God met last week in the Donald Nine home with a carry-in dinner and gift exchange being held. Rev. Walter Williams opened the meeting with prayer followed by devotions by Mrs. Walter Burcham on prophecy. Each member gave a poem on Christmas as a portion of the program. The January 21 meeting will be with Rev. and Mrs. Victor Yeager with Mrs. Nine in charge of devotions.
