Concord out scores Wawasee 71-63
By LARRY ALLEN Last Friday night coach Tom Spear’s Warriors were upended by a tough Concord team. Wawasee led 32-26 at half time and built their lead to 14 points during the third quarter, but a tight Concord press overcame the Warrior margin. Concord then pulled away in the final seconds for a 71-63 triumph. The game gave Concord a 3-1 record. Wawasee is now 2-2 in season play and 0-1 in the conference. Jim Stout led the Warriors in

Prep at 0-4 season Wawasee Prep lost it’s third and fourth straight basketball games of the year on Friday and Saturday nights, falling to 0-4 for the season. On Friday night, Prep traveled to Akron to play the tough Flyers with their fine six foot seven inch center, Don Coplen. The Lakers again experienced poor shooting and poor ballhandling which has plagued them throughout the first two games of the year. Prep managed 17 points in the first half and trailed 38-17 at intermission. In the second half, Prep scored more consistently but could never quite overcome the huge lead which Akron had built in the first half. The final score was Akron 78 and Prep 64. Sylvester Allen, plagued with ankle injuries in the first two games of the season, led all scorers in the game with 27points. Greg Anderson was the only other Prep player in double figures, posting 14. Bob Bussard and Coplen led Akron with 24 and 21 points, respectively. Middlebury Game Prep traveled to Middlebury on Saturday night where they dropped a 68-62 decision to Bethany Christian in Prep’s first Midland Athletic conference encounter of the year, thus giving a severe blow to Prep’s hopes of successfully defending the conference title which Prep gained last year. The Lakers played well in the first half with some very fine shooting and defense and held the halftime lead at 41-30. In second half play, the poor shooting and ball handling

Wrestling Warriors win opening NLC battle over Rochester Zebras
Wawasee wrestlers, under coach Terry Frank and assistant Ken Jordan, invaded Zebra mat territory Tuesday evening and captured an overwhelming 67-0 victory. The Warriors literally put the Zebras’ backs to the mat and registered eight pins en route to victory. The Warriors got off to a winning start when “Little D” Dave Doll nabbed a pin in 3:22 in 98 pound action. Paul Dye followed up with a 3-2 decision in the 105 pound class. In 112 pound action, Warrior Chip Dye rolled over his opponent in 1:08. Mark
Warriors nipped by Falcons 33-31
Wawasee wrestlers suffered from mistakes and a costly forfeit and Fairfield capitalized on each one. Wawasee captured five victories out of the first six weight classes and jumped to a 27-3 lead. However, the Warriors were unable to gain any real advantage in the remaining weight classes, and the Falcons slowly nipped away the margin and came out on top 33-31. Dave Doll opened action with a 3:10 pin over Fairfield’s Carlton. Warrior Paul Dye posted a 4-2 decision over Miller at 105 pounds. Chip Dye made it three in a row with a pin at 1:53 over Fairfield’s Greg Love at 112. The Warrior winning streak suffered a temporary set back when Mark Vanlaningham came out on the short end of a close 8-10 decision at 119 pounds. Warrior winning action resumed as Dan Doll nailed Fairfield’s Slabach in 4:32 as Slabach spent the majority of the match trying to avoid the right pinning combo. Randy Lewallen made quick work of his Fairfield opponent and registered a :40 pin at 132 pounds. Joe Melendez, Wawasee’s 145 pounder, and Fairfield’s Joe Salazar battled to a 1-1 draw; and Bob Bauman and Fairfield’s

INDIANA BEATS HARVARD: Headlines for Hoosier fans. The Ivy League fails in a bid for Midwest prestige. Harvard was Ivy League runner-up last year and aimed higher but couldn’t do it at I.U. We missed the familiar sight of Dr. Dahling, now deceased, who had seen 46 years of home openers. It was his type of team. Speedy and quick. I was happy and sad. The guards were out of this world quick. There were four, Buckner, Wilson, Crews and Kamstra. All made me want to shout with glee but I couldn’t help but feel sad for a little guy who, like the rest of us little guys, came to the point in athletics where some big feller could do everything he could and had many inches to reach over him. Bootsie White was a regular as a junior and stardom to oblivion is rough. He came in for the last few moments and his stock with me went up a thousand points. He played as though a starter. He did not go off halfcocked or get over eager. He did the job he was supposed to do and there will be situations where Bob Knight may use him after all. Hopefully. The Big Ten is a physical league and though I think we will be the quickest team in the league we appear to be the smallest. 6 ft. 8 is small in this league. This is why the pickers are not giving us much of a shot at the title but none of them can open the chest and look at the heart. We might be the team to beat on March 1. It doesn’t look so on paper but the games will be won on the playing floor. So much to be said about so many boys and it can’t all be said here. There are a lot of stars out there but with only a brief look at them I want to remind you of the unknowns. They were o.k. too. Craig Moris, a freshman from Ohio and a big name in Buckeye land look pretty good. Ahifield from Northfield is quick and a good ball player. Heininger from Fort Wayne is our only Junior and he and Allen and Tom Abernathy appeared ready if needed. They just happen to be behind Downing, etc.

At one time in the first half it was three freshmen and two sophomores — A preview of 73-74. They were pulling away. The three seniors are giving us leadership — Downing, Ritter and Wilson. If McGinnis —. The trustees are 1 “talking” about John Pont. The athletic Committee 5 year contract wish will be quite effective. Will the trustees let the guys who didn’t know the signals and who had to get a personal foul and caused the trouble win the war? I doubt it. One thing sure — the decision should be made now. It still boils down to the work of the alums makes the football program and that isn’t just talking but talking, doing, and sacrificing of the busy alum’s time. Snowmobile club formed at Syracuse A group of interested snowmobilers in the Syracuse area met Wednesday evening at the Syracuse fire station meeting room at which time the Wawasee Snowmobile Association was formed. Nicknamed The Hard Water Riders, it is hoped the club will better serve persons in the Syracuse-Wawasee area. Phil Rinker and Dennis Jones of the Lakeland Snowmobile club of North Webster assisted in conducting the meeting and advised in many areas. An election of officers was held as follpws: President — Larry Clodfelter Vice president — John Brewer Secretary — Mrs. David Heckaman Treasurer — Mrs. Lowell Ensinger The newly formed snowmobile club now plans to approach the Syracuse town board of trustees for a possible access route in Syracuse, similiar to that approved by the town of North Webster. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Saint Andrew’s United Methodist church with all persons interested in joining encouraged to attend this meeting.
