Warriors Win Saturday, Stop Columbia City 75-64

The Wawasee Warriors under coach Tom Spear won their second victory of the young season as they stopped the host Columbia City Eagles 75-64 Saturday night. The Warrior victory was topped off by junior Tad Chamberlin’s 27 points. He hit for 12 field goals and three foul shots before fouling out of the game.

Syracuse Nips Central Noble The Syracuse junior high school seventh and eighth grade basketball teams both opened the 1972-73 season this month with victories, against Central Noble. The eighth grade team got off to a slow start but rallied with 14 straight points in the second quarter to lead by seven points at the half. This lead was built as high as 12 points during the fourth quarter but Central Noble cut it to two points and missed a shot which would have tied the teams at the end. Rick Bauman led Syracuse in scoring and rebounding with Tim Hamman adding 10 points for the victors. The Syracuse seventh grade team jumped off to a 25-6 halftime lead and coasted to a 42-30 victory. The balanced Yellow Jacket attack was led by Patton with 16, Smith 10, and McKibben 8. Patton was also the leading rebounder with 13. Coach Tom Stiver credits Stan Kroh and Jim Willits with fine defensive efforts. Leading scorers for Central Noble were: Anderson 12, Sndinske 10 and Smith 6.

At present, the most prized property of mistletoe is the license it gives for plenty of Yuletide kissing. Fortunately, there’s plenty of mistletoe. Thanks to the birds, the plant spreads widely. The birds eat mistletoe berries and carry the seeds to trees near and far, say the editors of the Encyclopedia International.

It isn’t if you win or lose but how you played the game — was not written by a football fan. Not how you did it but did you win? We did against lowa by the stint of defense and luck. Our defense did not let them carry the ball over our thirty but they blocked a punt and we fumbled one. The fumble of the punt gave lowa a chance to tie it from our five but we held. I think we shoved them back. It will take a look at the film to tell if the pass was caught on our two yard line. The hassle at this point was around the fact that the striped shirter didn’t know if it was caught, made the call late, miscalled the first down, got it right, called an unsportsmanlike conduct on the lowa coach and then rescinded it. The last reversal was sure something new in sports. The defensive unit had a couple of freshman ends see action. Mike Eikenberry from Fort Wayne had an early season injury and Mark DeSalvo from Cincy. Soph. Rob Spicer saw action — all as Bill Pipp was banged around. Special note for Jim Merrell, senior, who has come strong. Mike Fulk and Danny Grossman were playing sorta

Concord stopped Wawasee Tuesday after being down 15-6 in the first game. The Concord girls came back in the final two games with scores of 15-10 and 15-13 for the victory. Wawasee defeated Warsaw on Monday 15-6 and 15-7. North Wood defeated Northridge 15-13 and 14-7 on Tuesday.

“possessed.” Billy Atkinson was burned on a two point conversion but played a good game. He had another big punt return. The teams are losing punt yardage as they try to kick away from him. Buckner made two interceptions. One lost yardage for it was fourth down but he ran the other one back a big chunk. Rodney Harris is coming fast. The offensive line blocking did not hold up the second half but we got out with our skin (barely). Each game Rodney improves. He has six good receivers. Byrnes is. back, Scolnik is unbelievable; Smock will be a super star, Flanagin is what we have been saying and Steve Mastin at tight end is outstanding and makes it hard for our two good backup men, Mark Deming and Bill Armstrong to get much playing time. We are using passes to St. Pierre for good yardage. Soph. Dennis Cremeens continues to run the crease for good gains. Quicker in changing -directions but not as quick on the start nor as strong as Starling. Neil Hayes, a walk-on from Fort Wayne, plays when a blocker is needed and has good running ability. This gives us depth. Purdue here we come. In-
