Wawasee Prep Opens Basketball Season

Wawasee Prep will open it’s 1972-73 basketball season this Saturday, Nov. 18, at Westview high school. Coach Rex Yentes, starting his fifth year as head coach at Prep, has seven lettermen returning from the previous year which posted a 20-1 record. Sylvester Allen, leading scorer and rebounder in the 1971-72 season, leads the list of returnees. He scored 1,102 points in his varsity career at Prep while grabbing over 800 rebounds. His preparation, according to Yentes, for the coming season has been hampered due to ankle injuries. In the backcourt, two seniors and two juniors are battling for starting positions. They are Greg Anderson, Terry Bonds, Mike Hurd and Leon Streeter. Anderson was a starter last year and averaged 10-points per /The boot's f the look Here's the natural bottom for your flares. In the front court, the Lakers will have Otha Wallace, second leading scorer last season with 309 points. Another returning starter is 6’2” Frank Hunckler, second to Allen in rebounding last season. Two other contenders for front court spots are seniors Lance Hershberger and Jack Pain. Yentes added that both looked good in practice and could be in the starting line-up on opening night. Illinois came out ramblin and gamblin and did the things that sent I.U. to the Rose Bowl in 1967. They threw a 40 yard lateral across the field on a kickoff, threw a halfback pass that was first ruled interception by I.U. and then reversed to possession by the Illini, had two pitchouts thrown in the ground and bounce around and up to the runner to keep scoring drives alive, gambled on fourth down and scored a touchdown. But it was our lack of defense in the first half that ate us alive. We were awful the first half — on defense and we had to settle for field goals but we came out fighting the second half to make a game of it and then to blow it in catch up football. We showed guts. It is lowa and Purdue for a winning season. Rodney Harris will be great and is maturing. Our number of youngsters shows the recruiting is on the way back. The three fine young blacks

round out the Prep roster: Senior Maurice Johnson and juniors Aaron Scott and Jay Muehlenkamp. Following Saturday’s game, Prep will not wait long to return to action. On Tuesday night, Nov. 21, the Lakers will play their home opener against Culver Military Academy, the only team to beat Wawasee Prep last season. The junior varsity game will get action underway at 6:30, with the varsity game scheduled to begin at 8 in the Prep gym. The public is invited to attend. The Prep schedule follows: T 6:45 H (Wawasee Prep) 6:30 T 6:30 T 6:45 T * 6:45 H (Wawasee Prep) 6:45 T 6:30 H (Syracuse Jr. High) 6:45 H (Syracuse Jr. 12:00&l:45 High) 7:00&8:30 H (Wawasee Prep) 6:45 T 6:30 T 6:45 T 6:30 T 6:30 T 6:45 H (Wawasee Prep) 6:30 T 6:30

making big contributions are proof of our 'quality. Rodney Harris, Quinn Buckner, the frosh safety and Ken Starling. You should look at the miracle of Willie Jones for it looks like his guts and determination will overcome the knee tumor and the operations. He is great and can play so well so many places that you should watch for him next year. The offense loses three seniors off of the two units. Glen Scolnik — great but so are sophs Mike Flanigan etc. Tackles Dave Spungeon and Bill Geiger are doing their share but 19 of 22 is a lot to return. The defense loses 10 of 22. Here is where a lot of work Pont was still calling the plays. Maybe he will turn Rodney loose at the lowa game. He alternated freshman Trent Smock and soph Mike Flanigan at the receiver slot. We have the receiving corps with these two and Scolnik. Neil Hayes, a Ft. Wayne, Indiana walk-on played in the power running plays. He proves what heart can do. Also he is bigger. His great work on the J.V. earned him the shot. Indiana High School football quality is improving and Indiana’s Hoosiers will benefit. Even a school like North Newton can contribute. Where — look for Morocco or Enos on the map. Rich Harwood stands about 6 ft. 3 and 210 or so. Runs track, played basketball until this year but will wrestle. A good student and a candidate for all-state especially if at a bigger school. He wants an education too and our staff is so geared. He is no sleeper for Jack Mollenkopf was talking to him as are some other big ones. The liberty enjoyed by the people of these States, of worshipping Almighty God agreeably to their consciences, is not only among the choicest of their blessings, but also of their rights. - GEORGE WASHINGTON
