Tigers Stop Warriors 14-6 In Final Game

Coach Don Storey’s young Warrior team lost to the visiting Warsaw Tigers 14-6 last Wednesday night as the rains fell at Warrior field. It was the final game of the season for both teams. During the first half of the game the two teams battled to a 6-6 tie. The Warriors, however, were unable to get on the scoreboard during the second half. The game, or at least the second half, seemed to belong to Warsaw’s Rod Wildman who is only a junior. The six foot, 175 pound Tiger carried the ball 46 times for a total of 240 yards. Wildman and Warrior standout Kim Cripe were both close to 100 yards rushing during the first half of the game with Cripe being held during the second half and Wildman continuing his drives. Early Score Kim Cripe put the Warriors on the scoreboard during the first quarter when he went over from the one-yard line with 2:(NJeft. Cripe had recovered a Warsaw fumble at the Warrior 32-yard line and led the Wawasee team to the goal line as he carried nine times during the 11 plays in the 68-yard drive. Mark Smith and Doug Brown made the other two carries. The point after, a pass from sophomore quarterback Smith to Jack Schopf, failed. Warrior hopes looked high again a short time later when Warsaw fumbled a second time and Mark Vanlaningham fell on it. These hopes were short lived as Wawasee failed to make its first down. Warsaw got on the score board with 4:55 remaining in the half. Wildman carried the ball for 11 of 14 plays on a 63-yard drive. The kick failed, making the score 6-6. The Tigers threatened again in the half, however, a pass interception by Juan Pena ended the drive. Warsaw seemed to control the ball during the second half of the game. Their winning touchdown

Michigan beat us on the scaeboad but we beat ourselves on the field. Ten errors will not win ball games and when you are playing the number four team in the country your defense was phenomenal to hold it 21-7. It was closer than that and it wasn’t out of reach until we lost Rodney Harris, the criticized quarterback from last week, on another injury. The fans came away with great respect fa Rodney and now think he can do the job. He gritted his teeth in pain as he wiped dry from the showa and said — I’ll be back — and Saturday but only Saturday can tell. What happens if Hornbeck gets hurt? Willie Jones was throwing along the sidelines. He has worked and worked but his knee is a question. Charlie Byrnes starts making cuts on his knee this week. He wears the same

came in the third period when they covered 58 yards in 13 plays. Wildman carried for 10 of the 13 plays with quarterback Terry Ressler going over from the oneyard line for die score. Wildman’s point after was stopped. Alert Play 'Die final score of the game came on a safety with 4:12 left in the game. Dwight Dean’s punt was blocked and an alert Chad Singery fell on the ball in the Wawasee end zone, giving Warsaw a two-point safety rather than a touchdown. The Warriors had one last chance when Bob Bauman pounced on a fumble by Wildman on the Warsaw 49-yard line with 1:49 remaining on the clock. A pass by Smith was intercepted two plays later and Warrior hopes vanished. Even Season The Warriors, in a re-building season, ended the year’s play with a 5-5 record. Those who yelped at Hornbeck should know he did not even touch the ball on the last fatal fumble. another chance and looked like last year. Dan Grossman seemed to be telling Rodney Lawson that good young boys must wait fa next yea and Rob Spica — well that was a big key in the defense showing. He played as we thought he could and we were mighty tough. Nate Cunningham, J. V. coach goes to Illinois this week with more to think about at quarterback than the varsity. He has a walk-on at the position, who is also injured, a linebacker who played it in high school, a senia in college from the “hamburger” squad who played wide receiva and what else I don’t know. Better we watch his two sophomore offensive tackles for they will be needed on the varsity next yea as that is the only line loss from this yea. It is a good spot fa some big high school lineman to shoot at. The depth charts here could use help. The key to happiness in life lies in unselfishness.
