Syracuse Town Board In Special Session
The Syracuse town board of trustees held a called meeting at town hall last Wednesday evening for the purpose of pressing town matters prior to the regular meeting scheduled for the third Tuesday in November. Town street-water-sewer commissioner Harley Conrad informed board members the town rodder for cleaning of plugged sewer lines was unsafe and that he would not send employees out to use the machine. Hie board authorized clerktreasurer Mrs. Betty Dust to purchase a new rodder costing $3,995 on a rental-purchase agreement, if funds are available. The O’Brien Manufacturing Co., Chicago, 111., would be supplier. The newer rodder requires one man to operate and covers 80 feet per minute compared to the outdated rodder covering 400 feet in a day with three men to operate. Also discussed was replacement of the old van truckas funds become available. Police Car Town attorney Bruce Frey was authorized to advertise for bids on a new police car for the town, using the present car as a tradein. Opening of bids was set for 7:30 p.m. on November 6. New Rates New rates were set increasing water and sewer hook-on rates for the town, following a study of a constant loss to the town for sometime due to rising costs of labor and materials. New rates, effectively immediately, set SIOO for water with three-quarter inch line; $125 for one inch; $l5O for one and onehalf inch; and S2OO for two inch.
A figure of $75 was derived for additional fees in a sewer line connection. Hook-on fees outside the town remain at S2OO for water and S2OO for sewer, excepting the S3OO set fee in the Pottowatomi Heights addition at the northeast edge of town. Parking Hazards Approval was given, upon recommendation of police chief Orville Vanderßeyden, regarding several areas in town which are hazardous due to obstructed vision, to limit parking. Areas discussed were on South Huntington for 50 feet south of the intersection with Carroll street, and west on Carroll along the Thrift Shop location; and parking near the intersection of Huntington and Pittsburg where two accidents occurred within several weeks, injuring a number of persons. Police were also authorized to enforce no parking zones in the area of the post office. An expenditure of SIOO was authorized for updating lighting at the pole shed structure near the sewer plant. Effective in January of the ensuing year, board members agreed to hold two monthly public meetings, the first and third Tuesdays of the month, at town hall, in place of the one monthly meeting used for years.
