North Wood Panthers Trip Wawasee Warriors 16-8
By TED SPEICHER For the second time in three games Wawasee’s Warriors have gone against supposedly weaker foes on their homecoming night and in both contests the Warriors were caught flatfooted for three quarters. While finally catching fire in the fourth, only to have their hopes lashed 10 yards short and one touchdown behind at the final gun. They were defeated by North Wood Friday 16-8. Using a strong running attack by their senior quarterback, Bill Lurtz, who did a good job throwing the Warrior defense off balance, with the old hiding ball behind the back trick, rushing for more yardage in the WawaseeNorth Wood game than all previous games totaled, North Wood scored first with 3:04 left in the first quarter with sophomore Brent Hughes going over from the three-yard line. The drive covered 60 yards in nine plays, all on the ground. Northwood’s John Gross kicked the extra point and North Wood riding high with homecoming spirit took a quick 7-0 lead. Neither team was able to move until late in the second quarter. Wawasee gave North Wood just the type of break you can’t afford to give any team on homecoming night. They fumbled on their 45 yard line and the Panthers promptly pounced on the ball. The Warrior defense at this point stiffened and held North Wood to a punting situation. At this point North Wood had in no way yet gained the ever so important momentum they needed to beat the favored Warriors. But, little did the Warrior fans realize, they were just moments away from getting just what the doctor ordered. North Wood’s Dave Matteren took the snap from punt formation, stood up
Jeff Miller Kicks First C Team Field Goal For WHS
Jeff Miller kicked a 28 yard field goal last Thursday night to become the first member of any Wawasee high school C team to score this way. The young Warriors stopped North Manchester 17-8. Miller passed to Yoder for the first touch down with Miller passing to Dale Ganz for the point after. The second touchdown came on a 27 yard pass to Yoder. The Warriors made 139 yards rushing while Manchester made 44. The Warriors added an additional 92 yards passing while Manchester added 51 yards passing plus 50 yards on a score against the second unit for a total of 145 yards. Wawasee made four first downs by rushing and three by passing for a total of seven. Manchester made one first down rushing, two passing and two on penalties for a total of five. The Warriors completed six of 15 passes while Manchester completed seven of 31. One Warrior pass was intercepted and five Manchester passes were intercepted. Wawasee lost 65 yards in penalties while Manchester lost 20. Wawasee had a 45 yard punting average, Manchester had 38. JERRY YODER was named back of the week. He scored two touch downs on 17 carries for 114 yards and four passes for 49 yards. The defensive man of the week was NELSON PRESTON who was 5-5. Leading tacklers were Jerry Yoder with 3-4, Jeff Miller 3-1,

and raced around the right end 45 yards for a touchdown. Gross again kicked the conversion and with just 1:07 left in the half North Wood got their injection of adrenalin and it seemed at this point they might have gotten enough to pull the upset. The half ended with NorthWood in the driver’s seat 14-0.
The Warriors came back on the field in the second half hoping to turn the momentum in their direction. But when it rains it pours, taking the opening kick off of the half the Warriors receiver apparently became confused as he took the ball on the one yard line and then stepped back into the end zone where he was tackled in the end zone for a safety, giving North Wood two more points. What is more important, is the fact Wawasee was forced to kick to North Wood. The Warriors from that point on allowed North Wood little or no room to operate their offense only to have trouble moving their own as Warrior stand off Kim Cripe was visually hampered by the injury to his knee in the Manchester game and who was less than half speed. The Warriors finally began rolling late in the fourth quarter after Mark Randall’s fumble recovery. Warrior quarterback Mark Smith got Wawasee on the board on an eight yard pass to sophomore tight end Chris Paulus for the touchdown with only 1:41 to go in the game. Smith hit Jack Schopf for the extra two points. The Warriors stopped North Wood after the kick off and the defense took over on the punt on the 17 yard line. Mark Smith brought the crowd to its feet when he hit Chris Singrey for a big bomb covering 47 yards to the North Wood 36 yard line with less

Prep Wins Final Game Wawasee Prep Lakers, in their third year of football as a varsity sport, romped to a 14-0 win over Gull Lake high school last Saturday, making the fourth win in the last five games for Prep. With a four win and five loss record to date, this game also gave the Lakers their third shutout of the year. Gull Lake, containing the largest school district in the state of Michigan, is a class B school and are to play schools of similar enrollments. The Prep defense held the talented Gull Devils to under 100 yards for the day, with a minus five yards in passing. Prep coach Phil Jones commended the entire defense for an outstanding game giving them 31 tackles by star linebackers Kevin McLain and Crit Witherspoon, 15 and 16, respectively. Senior Sylvester Allen, starting quarterback and receiver in the season’s early battles, returned to the squad after missing five games with a foot injury. Coach Jones used Allen twice, once as a decoy and once as a receiver for a great pass from senior quarterback Terry Bonds, covering 38-yards. All state halfback Greg Anderson, senior, scored the first touchdown with a slick punt return and fine blocking, covering 43 yards. Anderson scored his 97th and 98th points with a run for the two

than a minute to play in the game. Smith then hit Cripe for 11 yards and then ran for seven to the 18 yard line with two seconds left. Mark’s final pass was batted away and North Wood had won its third game of the year 16-8. The game is over and now the Warriors must get ready for the big game tonight against the biggest rival of all, the Warsaw Tigers who will certainly be up for the Warriors who handed them a humiliating defeat just one year ago — 37-0. The performance of Mark Smith in last Friday’s game was superb even in a losing effort. Mark rushed for more than 100 yards and passed for more than 150 yards, hitting 13 of 20. Those are quite impressive figures for a hard working sophomore quarterback. Good job Mark!
