JACK SNELL As an observer at the United Nations World Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden, June 5-16, Snell received an official “subpoena” from the U.S. State Department to be a member of one of twelve juries of the court. Snell’s testimony will center on the process of en-
vironmentalizing education. He said the environmental education process now in the pilot study phase in Indiana has implications for world environmental education. The world environmental education effort is expected to be under the auspices of UNESCO and the environmental secretariate proposed for the U. N. by the Stockholm conference, Snell said. As a member of the recently appointed state task force established by state superintendent John Loughlin to write a plan for environmental education, Snell has been involved in designing program for the public schools, universities, adult and continuing education programs, and community educational resources including the media, business and government, and labor organizations. He said the same educational process can apply to national as well as global education. Major emphasis in the process of environmentalizing education, Snell noted, is placed upon orientation of the traditional course content to emphasize the relationship to the environment that exists naturally and which makes learning relevant to students. He also pointed out that the process includes taking an interdisciplinary approach to education whereby all the disassociated curriculum areas are interrelated and used to prepare students to solve continually changing problems of living and surviving in the environment. “Ultimately, it is hoped, this process of educating people to the realities of living compatibly within their environments will lead to a change in human attitudes and values concerning the realities of what is required of humans to survive in an environment fit for quality living,” Snell concluded.
