CLEARING THE — Kim Cripe 33, Rick Dahlstrom 8 and Bruce Korenstra 60 are shown clearing the way for a partially hidden Wawasee runner. The Warriors won big Friday night when they played host to the North Manchester Squires.

Warriors Crush Manchester

By TED SPEICHER The Wawasee Warriors bounced back into the winning column Friday as the underclassmen did a job (Hi the hopeless Squires 40-0! The Warriors took the opening kick off and promptly marched 86 yards on the ground for a touchdown with their first possession of the ball. Warrior standout Kim Cripe repeatedly smashed at the Manchester defense as he gathered 78 of the 86 yards on the touchdown drive. With 3:15 remaining in the first quarter Mark Smith capped the drive with a two yard run for the touchdown. Mark also ran for the point after, as the Warriors took an early 8-0 lead. The Warrior defense quickly returned the ball to the Warrior offense as big Mark Reiff knocked the ball loose and recovered on Manchester’s 38 yard line. Sophomore quarterback Mark Smith wasted no time in moving the team to another touchdown. Mark hit Dwight Dean for a big pass play to the 15 yard line. Then on the next play Warrior fans got their first look at a talented sophomore running back Rick Dahlstrom. Rick took Mark’s next hand off and flashed straight up the middle for a 15 yard touchdown run. Mark Smith again added the extra two points on the run as the Warriors took a 16-0 lead. recovered a fumble on the kick off, again giving the Warriors the ball on Manchester’s 38 yard line. On the second play from scrimage Warrior Kim Cripe injured his knee causing many Warrior hearts to stop. Kim left the game and was replaced by Jack Schopf. In talking to Kim on the sidelines this reporter was assured that the injury was not a serious one. Kim should be ready for NorthWood-Wawasee action this Friday. Mark Smith hit sophomore Chris Paulus on a pass good to the one yard line. Rick Dahlstrom again carried for the touchdown with 9:08 left in the second quarter. Smith hit Jack Schopf for the point after and Wawasee led 24-0. Wawasee added still another touchdown in the first half as still another sophomore standout Jack Schopf intercepted a Manchester pass at 3:10 and returned it to the Manchester six yard line. Mark Smith followed his center Rodger Peterson as he went over from the one yard line to score with 1:40 left in the second quarter. Mark Smith again hit Jack Schopf for the point after and Wawasee led 32-0. Wawasee’s Mike Wollman put a stop to Manchester’s last drive in the half as he intercepted a pass as the half ended. Coach Don Storey elected to give his hard working reserves game experience most of the second half and they did a fine job shutting out their opponents. The Warriors tallied their last touchdown early in the third quarter as Mark Smith connected with his sophomore tight end Chad Singrey with Chris Paulus adding the point after for Wawasee’s final score 40-0. The game produced many fine efforts, especially the Warrior defense who allowed Manchester only 12 yards passing and four yards rushing! One could not help but praise the work of their fine group of sophomores — Dahlstrom, Smith, Singrey, Schopf and Paulus. Warrior fans have many exciting years to look forward to! OHIO STATE 44 - INDIANA 7, and a bad bad day. We were humiliated and Ted McNulty got hurt. Not only is the team hurt but think of Ted, a boy who fought back from a poor beginning in his collegiate career to a bright bright future and it is probably snuffed at this time. After McNulty it is Rodney Harris. This fine negro lad from Deland, Florida is a good one. Quicker, not as strong nor as experienced, he can fill the bill very well. A great runner and one who should win us our share of games. He takes instruction superbly. To beat Ohio State (who was even more powerful and fast physically than had been thought) we had to play errorless ball, get inspired and have a Tuesday Night Ladies Millers Mobile Park 27 5 Syracuse Rubber 23 9 Frog Tavern 21 11 Bellman’s Case 20 12 Hawk’s Rec. 18 14 Wawa Ski Club 16 16 Wawasee Construction 15 17 White Front Grocery 13 19 Walter Drug Co. 12 20 Augsburgers Food Palaces 10 22 Elko Mobile Homes 9 23 Bitner’s Antiques 8 24 High team series: Millers Mobile Park — 2113 High team game: Syracuse Rubber — 757 500 series: A. bounce or two our way. We committed three errors before the people got well settled in the stands and that set up our catch up football that leads to big scores. The future? We have to go into the last half of our schedule mathematically in the race but badly bloodied. It can still be done. We now have to get Michigan and Purdue as well as win those it seems we should win. Not impossible. Ohio State looks like national champ contestants but I think someone will get them before the Rose Bowl game is played. Michigan State —?? Ohio goes there November 11. Twenty-five years ago today Rex Grossman came off a two week layoff from an ankle injury. Dan Grossman — his son — came off a two week ankle injury layoff today. Maybe Dan can beat Purdue too. Things of note: Bill Atkinson got in his first varsity game. I feel he will play a lot in the future, and maybe this year. Mark DiSalvo, a freshman out of Cincy got in but went out shortly with what looked like a slight ankle sprain. Larry Jameson, a soph from Rantoul, DI., played along with John Jorday, another soph. Jameson came to school at 253, is now 228 but has a big frame and with weights etc., should make a fine big tackle. Both are about 6 feet 5 or 6. Chris Gartner missed two field goals at distances we have come to think will go through automatically. They might have stemmed the tide but Ohio State appeared to be too tough to deny Saturday. It would have been nice to stay closer. On to Northwestern. We never say die and I refuse to give up.
