loaiziNJSS AROUND . o The old steamboat in the above photo, which was taken about 1900, was called the “Ethel H.” and operated on Webster Lake, according to Paul S. Greider, r 1 (Backwaters) North Webster. It was owned by the late Victor Mock, and named after his daughter Ethel Harriett. The steamer was operated daily during the summer season with Frank Crites as engineer. Mr. Greider has other old time photos of the North Webster area. Syracuse looked like a farming town Sunday following a fun hayride by local couples Saturday night. Several more hayrides are set for this week end. Winds Monday helped to dry the straw strewn about and whip it around. A report came to this office Monday from a very disturbed female regarding a summer home broken into at Enchanted Hills last week. Seems a shotgun blast, plus a big log, were used to break down or through the back door to gain entry, and lights were on in the home. How fortunate the owners were not at home when a blast from a shotgun ripped through into surroundings. Youths of Saint Andrew’s and Calvery United Methodist churches will be participating in a UNICEF trick or treat event this Sunday evening from 5 to 7. Halloween activities are being planned for youth of the community with the annual P.T.O. carnival set for Saturday night at the Syracuse school and the Business and Professional Women’s club sponsoring a Tuesday night event scheduled to end at the city park for a marshmallow roast. Approximately 100 geese, in two separate groups, were seen last Wednesday over Wawasee, winging their way southward. They were a beautiful and graceful sight.

Members of the Cub Scout Pack 128 of Syracuse are planning a chicken BBQ at the Saint Andrew’s United Methodist church on state road 13 north of Syracuse. Terry McLeod, spokesman for the youngsters, said the serving time will be from 4 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. just prior to the WawaseeWarsaw football game next Wednesday night. Carry-outs are available, said McLeod. The BPW will sponsor a Halloween parade for the entire family next Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 6:30 p.m. The parade will begin at Dolan Drive, across from the Brethren church and march to the park. Judging will take place during the march. Firemen will hold a marshmallow roast at the park. The entire family is invited to dress up and participate in the affair. Prizes will be given to all of the children who are in costume Richard C. Bodine of Mishawaka, Democratic candidate for Lt.-Governor, rubbed his eyes at 6:45 this morning as he greeted members of the Warsaw Optimist club where he spoke, and said, “A fellow really has to be an optimist to get up at this time of morning to eat breakfast.” Lloyd Pitney In Operation 'Deep Fyrrow' USS VOGE - Na petty officer first class L *d R. Pitney, husband of the Miner Miss Shirley J. Sarber of r 3 Nappanee, participated in the annual NATO Exercise “Deep Furrow” off the coast of Greece aboard the destroyer escort USS Voge. Exercise “Deep Furrow” was an amphibious mock invasion of Greece by the combined forces of Greece, Italy, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States.
Round Table Ladies Meet The Ladies of the Round Table at Syracuse met last week at the home of Mrs. Michael Neff with high school student Susan Clark presenting the program “Keys to Understanding.” The meeting opened in usual form and a report by Mrs. Paul Rush from a South Bend paper on women’s clubs. Mrs. Clayton Mock and Mrs. John Naab reported good progress with the club scrap book, however, are in need of snapshots of members in their positions at hospitals, Sunday School, Cardinal Center, etc. They also reported on the 13th district convention attended at Hamlet. Mrs. Vernon Beckman reported that Darla Dahl is receiving Reader’s Digest in Braille for one year. She added that the local Lions club volunteered to pay for this aid, sending a check of $24 to the digest, and they in turn gave the money to the blind fund. Mrs. David Spray reported on a contest for community improvement projects, urged members to vote, and read a thank you from Mrs. Eloise Method who is now recuperating at the home of her daughter. European Trip Mrs. James Alford introduced Susan Clark for* the afternoon program in reference to a five week trip to Europe by four to five hundred students this past summer in a leadership study group. Places visited included Amsterdam, Heidelberg, Insbrook, Venice, Florence, Rome, Lucern, Paris, Brussels and London. Cost of the trip was a little over

SI,OOO. Students were housed in hotels and college dorms and occasionally traveled in small groups. Susan told of school life and how hard students study in Europe. She added that tests must be taken to see if an individual can go on to high school or occupational school, and that students take two or three languages. Mrs. Carl Wilkinson will entertain for the November 13 meeting of the group with Mrs. Leonard Barnhart giving the program. Entertain Local Authorities The staff of Wawasee Prep entertained last Wednesday night for members of the Syracuse volunteer fire department, police and sheriffs departments and local conservation officers. Primary purpose of the gathering was to promote better understanding and community relations, plus to familiarize the guests with the physical layout of the campus and buildings. Guests were given a complete tour of the facilities, and after a social hour, were treated to an Italian dinner prepared by Brother Jerry who recently returned to Prep following a two year stay with the Crosiers in Rome, Italy. Senior Mothers Have Halloween Party Fourteen members were in attendance for the Monday night meeting of the Senior Mothers dub at Syracuse in the Syracuse Lake home of Mrs. Joe Thornburg with Mrs. Wayne Stahley as co-hostess.
Halloween was the theme for the evening with games during the social hour. During the business meeting, Mrs. John LeCount and Mrs. Lewis Cobbum were welcomed back after long illnesses. Plans were discussed for the Christmas party which will be announced later. Favor winners were Mrs. Bud Harper, Mrs. Deloss Smith and Mrs. William Kerfin. Mrs. Janice Baumgartner will entertain for the next regular club meeting. Arrested For Illegal Hides Ray Riggers of Huntington was taken into custody by officers over the week end for illegal possession of untanned hides. Arresting officers were Syracuse police officer Joe Thornburg and conservation officer Earl Money. Riggers was fined a total of $36 in Turkey Creek township justice of the peace court.
