Warriors Stunned 19-14 By Concord On Friday The 13th

By TED SPEICHER Wawasee’s Warriors traveled into Elkhart county Friday and ran into a hornet’s nest, as the Concord Minutemen, riding high with homecoming spirit and aided by four costly Wawasee fumbles upset the Warriors 19-14. From the outset Concord took the game to the Warriors with hard hitting, pinpoint passing and surprisingly effective running attack. The smaller Concord team also accomplished the feat of stopping the Warriors most potent offensive weapon, talented Kim Cripe. The sticky Minutemen defense keyed on Kim very effectively as they held him to only 54 yards rushing and one touchdown. Quarter Fumbled Away The Warriors ' received the opening kick off and tried without success to pick up a first down and were forced to punt, as they lost ground. Taking over on their own 47 yard line, Concord found the going a bit rough themselves, as big Mark Reiff hit the quarterback for a 17 yard rush. The Warriors received the first break of the game as Bob Bauman intercepted a Concord pass with 7:45 left in the first quarter of play. The Warriors returned the favor quickly as on their first play the ball was fumbled back to Concord on their 31 yard line. The Warrior defense proved to be stingy as they allowed Concord only four net yards in four plays, forcing them to return the ball on downs. Wawasee then put together a fine drive, moving the ball to Concord’s 21 yard line and a good chance to score. Unfortunately, fumble was the name of the

game, and the Warriors did just that with Concord recovering. Punt Hurts! Concord got the football in great field position as a result of a big Concord punt which was downed on Wawasee’s one foot line, forcing the Warriors to punt after they were unable to pick up the first down deep in their own territory. Concord returned the punt to Wawasee’s 35 yard line and with 3.00 left in the half moved the ball to the six yard line where with 26 seconds left in the half sophomore Terry Campbell went six yards for the score. The kick for the extra point was good and Concord went into the locker room with a 7-0 halftime lead. Warriors Score The Warriors came out fighting in the third quarter and stopped Concord on downs. Taking over on their 53 yard line Wawasee’s Smith and Brannock teamed on carries, moving the ball to Concord’s 25 yard line. Warrior Kim Cripe then broke away around the left end for 20 big yards to the five yard line with Kim finally putting the Warriors on the board with 3:53 left in the third quarter. Then the Warriors failed on the try for extra points on the run, which perhaps gave Concord the extra adrenalin they used in the final quarter of play to continually cut short repeated Warrior thrusts, riding on that all important one point lead 7-6. Defense Tough Concord got a big break early in the fourth quarter as they found themselves on Wawasee’s eight yard line with first and goal on a questionable pass interference play. The Warrior defense then did a very fine job as they held Concord with Kim Cripe stopping the ball carrier one yard short of the goal on a four down play. Once again Concord rose to the occasion as they did not allow the Warriors a first down deep in their own territory. With 8:07 left in the game Wawasee was forced to punt deep in their own end zone. The punt went off the side of the Warrior foot and was claimed to have gone out of bounds on the 12 yard line of Wawasee. This time Concord did manage to put the ball over but only with great difficulty as the Warrior defense again did a fine job. The kick for the extra point failed, but Concord held a 13-6 lead. Drive Killed Wawasee moved quickly, starting a drive on their own 16 yard line due to a clip on the kick

off. Warrior quarterback Mark Smith hit Doug Brown on a pass for seven and Dwight Dean on another to the Concord 40 yard line. With 4:43 left in the game it looked as though Warrior quarterback Mark Smith was going to break it all the way till Concord’s players caught him and hit him hard causing the ball to pop loose. A Concord player picked the ball up and returned it all the way to the 20 yard line of Wawasee. On the first play the Minutemen stung the still shocked Warriors with a 20 yard touchdown pass. The PAT failing. Concord lead 19-6. The Warriors struck back yet in the game as Mark Smith went over from the four yard line. The PAT was good to Dwight Dean. The Warriors then tried an onside kick which was recovered by Wawasee but time just simply ran out finding the Warriors on the short end 19-14. There probably are 100 different arguments as to what happened but it’s already history. The game is played on the field not on paper. Concord took the game to Wawasee and won. It’s as simple as that, Concord 19Wawasee 14. Wawasee will meet Manchester this Friday at Warrior field.
