Coach Jerry Minton has brought the sort of cross country running into prominence for possibly the first time in Wawasee’s history. This reporter covered a meet Thursday night, against Columbia City and was very impressed as to the enthusiasm, coach Jerry Minton has instilled in his young, eager runners. In the past the sport of cross country has been more or less just a sport that athletes competed in to condition themselves for the more publicized sports such as basketball, baseball and track. The contest itself may be one of the most grilling of all. The team usually consists of 10 a- more boys who may compete against as many as 30-50 opponents on the race course, which is 2.5 miles in length. The course may be a woods, field or a golf course, depending on the host team’s facilities. To be a top competitor the boys must run many miles in practice. The distance usually varies as does the pain along the course where after the first couple of minutes of the running the pace it must be a personal thing in the young athlete’s mind. One can easily see the physical and mental balance the cross

country runner must discipline himself to. The rewards: Few — few fans, little glory and pain. But, perhaps these young athletes obtain the utmost team competition on the score sheet while knowing they must run the grilling 2.5 mile race alone. This boils down to one thing, personal satisfaction in being able to obtain their goal. Hats off to coach Jerry Minton and his squad of cross country runners. The Team This year’s Warrior cross country team has a record of seven wins and two loses with a conference record of 3-0. The team has been led by senior Steve Hipsher who has

lowered the school record five times during the season. He has finished number one for the Warriors every time but one when Bob Martin, also a senior, won. Martin usually runs number two for the Warriors. The number three spot is shared by many runners — Chuck Rapp, senior; Keith Strauss, junior; Bryon Wolfe, sophomore; and John Schacht, freshman. John Glon, junior, is also a varsity finisher. Other team members pushing for varsity finished are Bob Martinez, junior; Mike Zurcher, senior; Paul Dye, sophomore; Steve Kroh, freshman; Gary Klinke, freshman; and Benny Morse, freshman.
Cox. The score at the end of the first quarter was 22-0. In the second quarter the young Warriors started their 'scoring when Ralph Reiff ran 28 yards. The PAT failed. Mike Baldwin scored the second touchdown of the quarter on a run of one yard with Bill Rush receiving a pass for the PAT. Reiff went in again on a 20 yard run for the third score of the period with Gary Dean running in for the PAT. At half-time the score was 44-0. In the third quarter Ralph Reiff ran seven yards for a touchdown with Mark Shearer running for the PAT. Gary Dean scored the final touchdown of the game on a 31 yard pass from Cox. The PAT failed. There was no score in the final quarter. BRAD COX and RALPH REIFF were named backs of the week and BILL RUSH was the lineman. '> . Wawasee gained 189 yards rushing while Fairfields was held to a minus 13. The Warriors gained 137 yards passing and Fairfield was held to an even zero. Wawasee gained seven first downs while Fairfield had one. Wawasee completed 8 or 18 passes while Fairfield did not complete the one pass tried. The young Warriors are not 2-2-1 for the season and will travel to Plymouth on Saturday to meet the Rockies. They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. — BENJAMIN FRANK! .TN
