Buying A House? LAFAYETTE — Buying a house? You aren't alone, says Dr.. Jan Armstrong, extension consumer marketing specialist at Purdue university. This is a popular time of the year for families to buy homes — and that means high level, big business for any family. As is true for any big business, there are do’s and don’ts to follow if you want to be successful. And because a house is a major investment, committing the family budget for several years, success is important. The specialist suggests that families begin by looking at their life style—how they live and how they want to live. “While some consideration must be given to resale value, it’s more important that the family buy the house best suited to their life style and financial situation,” she says. An important “do” is to buy in a location you’d like to live in. Consider the distance to school, work, shopping centers, and recreation areas. Beware of buying too near a shopping center that may mean increased traffic, trash, noise, and confusion, the specialist warns. When you have found a suitable house in a desirable location, check the construction of the house. If you do not know what to look for, seek help from a real estate appraiser, builder, architect, or friend. Doing some research about house construction can be worth the time, too. Housing bulletins are available from your local cooperative extension office. Banks, loan companies, and libraries also have materials that can help you. Os course, you can spot some points of construction just by taking a walkthrough and around the house. For example, the specialist suggests you check windows, siding, and the underhang for peeling paint and missing caulking. Also check the house for items that will make it livable —a good furnace, suitable drainage, adequate electrical outlets, and an outside water faucet. These things are more important than extra space for parties and guests, Dr. Armstrong says. When you have found the house for you, you’re ready to shop for a mortgage and home owners insurance. Shop carefully because some mortgages and insurance policies are better deals than others. Making careful selections could save you thousands of dollars. Your mortgage will be less expensive if your household appliances are not included in the price of your house. If a stove and refrigerator are included in the cost of the house, you may be paying for them for a period of 30 years, the extension specialist points out. This makes little sense because such equipment is likely to be long gone before the mortgage is paid. Dr. Armstrong advises new home owners to get the houseplans from the former owner or the builder. Houseplans will help you locate wire circuits and plumbing lines for future maintenance or modification. The end of the world will arrive on time; so don’t worry about the predictions.

NO BICYCLES • ■ ' ' '■ An increasing number of bicycles are entering the traffic stream on our highways. In some cases, this poses serious problems in safely combining a mixture of bicycle and motor vehicle traffic. Special signs will be provided to guide cyclists to specific bicycle routes and a new symbol sign has been developed for areas where bicycle use is prohibited. The sign depicts a bicycle with a red circle and slash superimposed over it. This practice of using a red circle and slash to indicate a prohibited movement is also used in Europe and Canada.

Hurryin Hoosiers By J- Q- Fann

INDIANA 28, and not enough. In the aid it was the early giveaway of the Hoosiers that told the tale but I feel that the team showed a big big heart in fighting back after we had dug ourselves into a deep hole. They did it and did it but couldn’t get it all the way. The “pud” field goal miss on the pass from center and the easy two point PAT that was dropped was 5 points. A big five at the end. The loss was a disappointing one but not too unexpected. TCU is a fine football team, ex-, perienced and high as a kite while our coaches like to win they are concentrating on the conference and getting ready. They would like to win along the way too. 4 and 1 at Ohio State is a fine goal, a tough one, but it means a good chance at the conference. Several young football players are getting into the lineup. Quinn Buckner is showing them his ability. He played the last half at safety and had many tackles and one spectacular touchdown save, only to get his coverage miscalled and Minnesota put the game away. They came close to losing it as we fought to the last second. Buckner is a good one, or better than that. He will make some “experience” mistakes but he won’t make the same one twice. At tackle John Jordan, the soph, and a non-predictor, could neither play nor practice as a freshman. He is playing a chunk now and will play more. He relieves Pawlitsch. He is big and strong and plays on the goal line stand unit plus certain running plays. He is a big asset. Jim Schuck is a freshman guard who has moved ahead of Mat Symakowski. Symakowski had offers from 96 schools and when he can be ousted by a freshman that freshman has to be great. Our middle of the line group is pleasing to see. Schuck also plays on kickoff returns. An offensive guard is a tough position to learn and a freshman playing is surprising. . Ken St. Pierre is bruised but he is needed to keep the defenses honest. You can look for Carpenter, former Indiana All-State quarterback, to keep moving up and will play a chunk. He is improving by leaps and bounds and has the physique. He helps the traveling squad for he can go at two positions. He will be

pushing St. Pierre one of these days. It was disappointing but the outlook is o.k. and the game might have matured us enough to make us contenders for the Big Ten. Syracuse Jackets Defeat Webster The Syracuse Yellow Jackets hosted the North Webster Trojans at Wawasee high school on Tuesday evening of last week, coming away with their second win of the season, 26-8. Highlight of the game was the parsing of Keith Cripe and seventh grader Bryan Smith. On the third play from scrimmage, Cripe hit J.C. Schrock for a 45-yard touchdown. All total, Cripe completed eight out of 16 for 96-yards. In the running department, Rick Bauman gained 96-yards on ten carries and two touchdowns. The gold offense was headed for another score in the fourth quarter when coach Jones and coach Pletcher sent in an all seventh grade squad. Some good running by James Glon and an eight-yard pass by Smith accounted for the final touchdown. North Webster, late in the fourth quarter, pushed across their only score. The Yellow Jackets will travel to Fairfield on October 3 for a game at 4:30 p.m.
