Warriors Stop Bremen 24-13

By TED SPEICHER The Wawasee Warriors stopped a small pesky Bremen team Friday 24-13, proving they could come from behind as a very shaky early going saw them down 13-0. Bremen’s fired up defense held the Warriors offense to a total of four net yards on Wawasee’s opening set of downs forcing Wawasee to punt. The small Bremen squad then proceeded to prove to everyone present they were there for one purpose, to win. The fired up Lions, behind the fine running by their quarterback, picked up several first downs to the Warriors’ 35 yard line. An illegal procedure penalty against the Lions put them in a hole momentarily. The big play for the Lions came on a 2-13 situation as their quarterback handed off to one of the Lions running backs who proceeded to rifle a 38 yard pass to the Warrior second yard line. The Warrior defense shut off all openings through the middle of the line but was unable to. stop Bremen’s Baker on a bootleg as he went in for the score with 4:50 left in the first quarter. Thayer added the point after touchdown with a kick to give Bremen a 7-0 lead. Following Bremen’s touchdown, Warrior Kim Cripe returned the kickoff to Lions 40 yard line. Warrior “road runner” Rick Brannock, on the first play, broke loose around the Warrior left end and it looked for a moment like Rick would “break it” all the way, but two Bremen defenders hit him hard, just 10 yards short of pay dirt and the pig skin popped loose. A fired up Warrior defense stopped the Lions from advancing and forced them to punt as time ran out in the first quarter.

A booming Lion punt put the Warriors in a hole as Cripe, Brannock and Smith each took a turn carrying the ball. Unfortunately they had no luck and the Warriors were forced to punt on three plays. Then disaster struck, a lightning quick Bremen defender broke through the Warrior line blocking the punt and in the same motion swept the ball up like a human vacuum cleaner and scampered into the end zone and the Warriors quickly found themselves behind 13-0. Come Alive After the shocking blocked punt for a score, Wawasee’s Brad Lemberg took a line drive kick off and bulled his way for 16 yards to the Warrior 46 yard line giving the fired up Warriors good field position. Wawasee then unleashed its “baby bull” Kim Cripe as he tore at Bremen’s line repeatedly for five and six yard gainers to the Bremen one yard line. On the next play Cripe was hit hard by what seemed like the whole Bremen line keying on him. The ball popped loose and squirted into the end zone. It was a mad scramble for the loose ball, but when the dust cleared out came none other than the Warriors’ talented sophomore end, big Chad Singrey, and the Warriors were on the score board. Road runner Brannock followed a Kim Cripe block into the end zone for two more points on the PAT making the score 13-8. The Warriors’ defense quickly stopped Bremen as Warrior Jack Schopf sacked Lion quarterback for a big loss 4-11 with 3:25 seconds left in the half. Kim Cripe returned the punt 11 yards. Sophomore quarterback Mark Smith, showing great poise, then hit road runner Brannock with a pass for 65 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, a clipping call on the Warriors called the touchdown back. Undoubtedly quarterback Mark Smith called another pass play, this time he found his receiver, sure-handed Doug Brown, on the five yard line pulling in the pass in traffic as Warrior fans went wild. Warrior Kim Cripe crashed through the line for five yards and the touchdown with Rick Brannock again adding the PAT on a run as the Warriors fought back to take the lead only seconds before halftime 16-13. Dominate The Warriors defense stole the show the second half as they repeatedly socked the Bremen runners for losses on no gains. Warrior Mike Vanlaningham

played an outstanding defensive game, along with Warrior Kim Schumn as the Warrior defense limited the Lions to only 99 yards total offense and only 11 of the 99 were rushing. Quite a game! The Warrior star running back Kim Cripe finished out the Warrior scoring as he scored his second touchdown of the evening on a beautiful 23 yard run in the fourth quarter. Cripe also ran for the PAT, giving Wawasee the 2813 victory over the Bremen Lions. The win extended the Warriors conference record at 1-1.
