Rochester Stops Warriors 30-18
By TED SPEICHER Warrior fans were treated to an exciting football game Friday as both teams displayed fine ability to move the pig skin. Unfortunately Rochester had the greater success as they tallied 30 points to Wawasee’s 18. The score may be somewhat misleading, as the Warriors must be commended for their fine showing against a highly rated Zebra club. Two of the area’s finest running backs, Kim Cripe and Rochester’s Jim Swank had outstanding games as each

tallied three touchdowns. Warriors baby bull Kim Cripe, rushed for 124 yards on 25 carries, as Rochester’s pride and joy Jim Swank flashed for 127 yards on 25 carries. Early Strike Warrior running back Mike Vanlaningham took Rochester’s opening kick off on the run, following his blockers smoothly until the right moment, he shot up the middle running over several Rochester defenders in the process. Mike was finally shoved out of bounds on Rochester’s 22 yard line. Two plays later Warrior Kim Cripe ripped off tackle for 15 big yards, as Wawasee took a quick 6-0 lead with only 1:50 gone in the first quarter. The PAT failed. Wawasee’s defense did a fine job containing Rochester, forcing them to punt 6:25 on 4-4. Then lightning struck as a high punt was fumbled by the Warrior receiver on the 21 yard line. The warrior defense fought Rochester to a fourth and two down situation, only to see their efforts fade, as speedster Jim Swank tied the score on a fine executed end sweep 6-6. Swank also added the two extra points on a run to give Rochester the first quarter advantage 8-6. Swank Again The Warriors fought the Zebras on even terms until 2:50 remaining in the first half.* Following a fine punt by Warrior Dwight Dean the Warriors had Rochester in a hole, but on three and four Rochester veteran quarterback Jim Warner connected on a big pass play, taking the Zebras all the way to the Warrior 20 yard line which can be dangerous territory when the opposition has a speedster of state scoring champion Jim Swank’s caliber. Rochester put their second touchdown of the evening on the board with only 1:12 left in the half. Swank again took the honors as the Warriors left the
playing field 16-6 at the half. Tallies Early On the second play in the quarter three Rochester’s Jim Swank seemed to catch everyone off guard. Showing blinding speed, Swank ripped off tackle and dashed untouched for 68 yards as Rochester stunned a large Warrior crowd with its third touchdown of the evening making the score 24 to 6. Warriors Move One must give the young Warriors a sreat deal of credit as they came back fighting harder than ever. Warrior Kim Cripe got things rolling again as he ripped off 12 big yards to start the Warrior drive at 6:41. Warrior Mark Smith then ran a sweep behind good blocking for 6 to our 49 yard line. Wawasee’s Mike Vanlaningham ripped for the first down to Rochester’s 47 yard line. Warrior Doug Brown did a fine job running on a reverse for big yardage to Rochester’s 29 yard line. Warrior work horse Kim Cripe ripped through the Rochester line for the final tough three yards, putting Wawasee on the board 1:40 left in the third quarter with the PAT failing. Rochester led 2412 going into the final 12 minutes of the game. Warrior Quarter Wawasee’s Warriors completely dominated the fourth quarter with exception of a poorly thrown pass which was tipped into an awaiting Zebra receivers hands, allowing clear

sailing for Rochester’s final touchdown. The score came with three seconds to play in the third quarter and the PAT gave Rochester 30 and the Warriors 12. The Warriors scored their last touchdown with only 47 seconds left in the game. The touchdown was scored by Kim Cripe, his third of the night, on three yard /\Masbup the middle with the PAT failing. The final score was 30-18 in Rochester’s favor. A few big mistakes proved to be the Warriors downfall as it was apparent to all who watched. The Ing note of encouragement was again the outstanding defense playing together with the much improved Warrior offense which proved to all they can certainly sustain a long drive showing fine Nocking and running in maintaining ball control. Friday the Warriors travel to Redskin territory to play Goshen, a team coming off a good schelacking from the Elkhart Central Blue Blazers 33-6. Good Luck Warriors! Milford-Webster Football Teams Play To 6-6 Tie
The North Webster Trojans hosted the Milford Trojans in both teams’ grid iron opener at Warrior field on Thursday night, Sept. 7. Despite a heavy rain that had proceeded the games, the field and players seemed to be in good condition. Milford’s Mel Chupp kicked off a 30 yarder to start the game. Webster received but after several downs was not able to make any gains. They gave up the ball to a determined Milford offense, who on their second play brought eighth grade quarterback Jim Adams around the left end for an impressive 45 yard gain. Two plays later Adams again took to the left for a touchdown. During the second period the North Webster Trojans struck out and scored when fullback Coy went around the right end. The point after was stopped. Although the game was to finish in a tie 6-6 the excitement was not over. Once in the third and again in the fourth, the Milford Trojans were within 10 to 14 yards of scoring. Mark Grove, who was one of several “Trojans of the week” for the Milford team set up a touchdown possibility by sprinting 45 yards after recovering a Webster fumble. Grove also made three unassisted and four assisted tackles. Mel Chupp and Norm Vanlaningham were impressive on defense. Chupp racked up five important unassisted tackles and one assist. Vanlaningham CC Team Downs Jimtown Members of the Wawasee cross country team scored 18 points Monday night to Jimtown’s 40 to win the meet held at Jimtown.
