JI IJ* OFF FOR CANADA — Pictured above is Dick Wineland of Syracuse with his 1929 Model AFord towing the family camper. Mr. and Mrs. Wineland and daughter Angela left Saturday, Sept. 2, for Ontario, Canada in their Ford. Although to some it looks impossible, the Winelands say this is a short trip. Last winter, when the snow was still flying, they drove to New Orleans, Fort Myers Beach, Fla., and back to Syracuse in their Model A without a single problem. Wineland says there are plenty of antique auto owners along any route they take and these people will help one another by lending their own parts if necessary. The Winelands will meet Bud Smith, also from Syracuse, at Ontario. Smith is motoring his 1928 Model A Ford the southern route, via Buffalo, N. Y. The two plan to motor together on their return trip to Syracuse.

Date: September 22 with departure time set for 6:30 a.m. Seth Ward was quite put-out Wednesday to find he did not make the society column for his 73rd birthday anniversary party on September 1 and we hereby wish him a belated birthday wish, of having his name in print. Another Golden Oldie is certainly “Grandma Grace” Anglin of Clunette. This sprightly lady, grandmother of Mrs. Tom (Nancy) Prickett of Syracuse, turned 90 on Labor Day, and still drives her own car around the county. Now you know where Nancy gets all her spunk. Look for an extensive remodeling of the Main street apartments, known for a number of years as the McClintic apartments, in the near future. The four-apartment building is now owned by Lola and Bill Pinney, and they hope to begin their project of revamping the building about October 9. The Pinneys have a number of building projects either on the drawing board or now underway, and it all promises to augur well for the Syracuse community. A nice new steel fence has been erected at the south edge of the Stan Insley property near the Syracuse school. A capacity group took part in the high school social science department one day field trip to Washington, D. C.» last May with 61 students and 19 adults in the group.

Ron Corson, this week, announced another trip is planned for next month on October 3 and interested persons may contact Tom Spear, Tony Clouse or Corson for further information. Bud and Mary Lou Smith have returned from a two-week trip through the mountains of Tennessee, Niagara Falls, upper Michigan around Mackinac and the Soo, and Wisconsin ... in a 1928 Model A Ford . . . pulling a fold-down camper, and report having a grand time. An antique car enthusiast, Bud might have missed the Auburn show, but saw many in the 14-day trip and aroused much curiosity, Mary admitted. Persons having access to the television during the morning hours might be interested in tuning in to Michiana By-Line at 9:40 on Friday at which time our town’s Marion Wogoman, with the Elkjiart Rehabilitation Center, will be appearing. He is a brother of Libby, (Mrs. Ishmael) Rookstool. Bright new carpeting meets the eye at Wawasee Bowl. The annual firemen’s picnic was Sunday at the scout cabin park and a highlight was a ride for the youth on the fire truck. First Charter Ins. Co., located above the Syracuse bank since its founding in May 1967, will move yet this week, John R. Walker, resident agent, said this morning, to their new Williamsburg-type building on East Main street. Trio Apprehended After Bout With Officer
Three Winonans face charges, two in circuit court and one in juvenile court, following a Saturday afternoon episode near Packerton at which time the trio overpowered deputy sheriff Ron Robinson and took his service revolver when being transported to the county jail. In addition to charges of public intoxication, fleeing an officer and resisting arrest, charges were filed Monday morning for assaulting an officer. Being charged are Donald Hamilton, 26, and Sterling Hall, 19, both of 806 Park avenue, Winona Lake. Turned over to juvenile authorities was Dewey Lee Gayhart, 17, 1500 Chestnut street, Winona Lake. Saturday The deputy, in relating events, was dispatched around 1:30 Saturday afternoon when it was reported a large group of persons were having a drinking party. Robinson scoured the area and found nothing. En route back to Warsaw on the Packerton road, he reported seeing two men lying in a ditch area along side the road, and approached. The pair, Hamilton and Hall, emerged from the ditch area to the roadway and were staggering. Young Gayhart was picked up along the road about 100-yards beyond, and all were placed in the rear seat of the police squad car. As Robinson approached the intersection of CR 400 S and Packerton road, Hamilton jumped from the back seat onto Robinson and grabbed for his gun, at which time the officer proceeded through the intersection stalling his vehicle on an embankment in an effort to stop the trio from taking his car if he were overpowered. Hall also flung himself forward onto the deputy and Gayhart jumped from the auto to flee the scene. As the three continued to wrestle in the auto, Robinson pushed the mike switch alerting other officers of trouble. A passing motorist stopped to offer assistance and Hamilton succeeded in getting the gun from Robinson, however, Robinson fled from the auto to the nearby motorist while the gun was aimed and fired threg times missing

both individuals and the waiting car. The motorist, who wished to remain anonymous, drove the deputy to a nearby farmhouse whereby he phoned the jail with details. A total of 29 law officers including troopers, sheriff’s department, city police, town marshals, out of county officers and an airplane and helicopter emerged on the scene in a matter of minutes. Sheriff Dave Andrews and state trooper Larry Yeiter found Hamilton in a bean field with the gun. Hall was taken into custody by Warsaw city officer Ted Dobbins and deputy Al Rovenstine nearby in a fence row, and Gayhart was picked up tty city patrolman Gerald Oswalt on East Smith street in Warsaw several hours later. Law School Nathaniel Crow Fick, Jr., of Crow’s Nest, Lake Wawasee, has been accepted by the University of Baltimore law school and reported to the university orientation just prior to Labor Day. few weeks the level was the lowest since late 1969. Last year, during the week ending on September 4, the Division received 44,848 claims. New layoffs last week were scattered. The largest reported was a one-week furlough of approximately 350 workers. A number of plants had completed their recalls after short seasonal production halts and several were expanding their employment. Also contributing to the decrease, Mr. Coppes said, was the fact that 797 claimants had reached the final week of their eligibility for payments.
