The Age Os Awareness By ANN HANCOOK Area Extension Agent This is the age of nutrition awareness. Unfortunately much of what we hear and read is not good nutrition information. Adelle Davis and Dr. Sillman seem to get more publicity than the nutrition experts who rightly deserve it. Perhaps the reason for this is that Adelle Davis and Dr. Sillman make nutrition exciting but perhaps stretch the truth slightly. One vitamin that Adelle Davis spends much of her time discussing is vitamin E. In 1922 two men at the University of California discovered an unknown fatsoluble substance reproduction in rats. It has been considered an important vitamin for man and animals since that time. The exact functions of vitamin E have not been clearly defined. Vitamin E has been found to have antioxident properties. So its function seems to be to protect other nutrients from destruction by oxidation. Research is continuing to pin point other functions. The Food and Nutrition Board has not set a recommended allowance for vitamin E but suggests that between 10 to 30 mg. per day satisfies the requirement for adults. Vitamin E is widely distributed in nature which makes a deficiency most unlikely. Vitamin E has been promoted as an “anti-sterility” vitamin and as an effective agent against heart attacks. Unfortunately, these claims are not based on results from around nutritional experiments. By eating a well rounded diet you are assured of getting an adequate supply of vitamin E. As function research is completed, we will learn more about the specific function of Vitamin E.
