ONE YEAR AGO Already about $5,000 of a goal of at least $20,000 has been raised er pledged in an effort to attract a small business administration loan to completely remodel the once-popular Pickwick Block in uptown Syracuse. Unofficial first day enrollment figures released this morning by Lakeland school superintendent Don Arnold shows 3,043 students enrolled in the Lakeland schools. A total of 217 entries were entered in the standard amateur flower show given by the Syracuse-Wawasee Garden club on August 26 at Wawasee high school. Stover ’ Hire won his fifth national championship in class B stock runabout bn August 22 at Lake Placid, Fla. A crowd of 73 persons attended tile Republican caucus Thursday night at the scout cabin. Mrs. Minnie Decker has returned from a three-month visit in Jupiter and West Palm Beach, Fla. Miss Sharon Pearl is a reading specialist this year in the Lakeland Community schools. Members of the Dewart Lake Ski club won a three-way showtournament Sunday afternoon at Dewart Lake, with North Webster’s Ski Bees placing second, and the Wawa Skiers, third. FIVE YEARS AGO Kosciusko county circuit court judge Gene B. Lee, on Monday, granted a 14-day continuance to attorney Herbert Bent to file a brief with the court in behalf of objectors to the proposed creation of a conservancy district to serve Lake Wawasee, Syracuse, Papakeechie and Bonar Lakes. Pvt. Andrew Gilbert is on a 45day leave from Germany, at the home of his parents the Walter Gilberts. Rick Workman has arrived at Fort Leonardwood, Mo. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Patterson and family returned Wednesday from a trip to Parke and Putnam counties and a tour of covered bridges. Pfc. Robert Ellis has returned to Fort Carson, Colo., following a two week leave here. Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Pfingst plan to jet to Rancho Cordova, Calif., in several weeks for a visit with the Kingsley Pfingst family. TEN YEARS AGO The annual Labor Day trap shoot is set for September 3 at Syracuse-Wawasee Gun club location south of Syracuse. Max Simon was elected president of the Bell family reunion during the gathering Sunday at the Delphi home of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bell. Edward Gallahue donated a new 19-foot Century outboard motorboat to the conservation department this week to be used in patroling Syracuse and Wawasee Lakes. James Felts and Ronald Kramer left this momning for Indianapolis to enter the U.S. Navy. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Kline of Munice are spending the week here with friends and relatives. Savings Bond Sales Are Up Joe Ettinger chairman of the Kosciusko county Savings Bonds committee has received a report revealing that the county’s Savings Bonds sales for July were $56,388 compared with $50,594 for the corresponding period of last year. Indiana sales for July were $13,817,755 and $12,469,422 for a like period of 1971 —a gain of 10.8 per cent. Forty-three of Indiana’s 92 counties reported sales gains for the month when compared with sales of July, 1971. Accumulative sales for the year totaled 65.4 per cent of the yearly quota of $154,500,000 for the state of Indiana.
In Seminar For Cosmetologists Jill Ann White of r 3 Syracuse, associated with Opal’s Beauty Salon, was a participant in the tenth annual seminar in advanced cosmetology last week at Tri-State college, Angola. The seminar was part of the effort of the National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists association to provide advanced education programs for licensed cosmetologists.
