Brenda Dahl Completes Camp Session At Martinsville
Brenda Dahl, daughter of the Oscar Dahls of Syracuse has completed a camping session at Camp James Whitcomb Riley near Martinsville. Camp Riley provides each camper two weeks of outdoor recreation, education and fun among the rolling hills of the 2,300-acre Bradford Woods near Martinsville. Operated by The James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association, Camp Riley serves physically handicapped children from Indiana who are between the ages of 8 and 16. Now in its 18th season, the camp accepts children who are handicapped by polio myelitis, cerebral palsy, birth defects, cystic fibrosis, myelomeningocele, paraplegia, impaired hearing, blindness, epilepsy, hemophilia, muscular dystrophy, cardiac difficulties, and other disabilities. Although Camp Riley is not a treatment camp, a physician and registered nurse are in residence.

Wade, Jr., Camp Riley is divided into small units which function independently, and each unit plans its own program. The daily routine at camp is designed to promote involvement and not entertainment. Emphasis is placed on traditional camp activities such as camp crafts, including ceramics and basketry, rock collecting, nature study, hiking, fishing, swimming, and cooking out. Each camper is an active participant in planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling the program of his own small group. Throughout the session, the camper’s abilities, rather than Hs disabilities, are emphasized. And, in addition to being exposed to his natural and historical heritage, each camper is en-

For the children of Camp Riley, the experience is the reality of accomplishing everyday tasks, of enjoying life to the fullest, and of helping those around them to forget die fact that they are “handicapped.” Hear Former Historic Hoosier Hills Coordinator ■Hie Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District board of supervisors, at their August meeting, heard an informative speech on resource, conservation and development projects. Joe Branco, former project coordinator of the Historic Hoosier Hills resource, conservation and development was the speaker. Branco is now in the area II office at Kendallville and is area conservationist with the soil conservation service. Also attending were commissioners Maurice Dorsey and Glenn Lowman; and area extension agent, Don Frantz. Supervisors Myron Metzger, Perry Hathaway, Leon Tucker, Bob Norris, Fred Kuhn and Kenneth Dickey and district conservationist, Joe Wilson attended a resource, conservation and development meeting, along with Elkhart, Saint Joe and Marshall counties, on July 18. Metzger reported on that meeting and stated Fred Kuhn had been elected temporary vicechairman of the group. Supervisors were reminded of the legislative dinner on September 14 near Columbia City and the fall area meeting on September 19. John Maryan of Washington township was accepted as a new cooperator. Additional Appropriations To Be Considered Notice is given this week to taxpayers of Syracuse that the proper legal officers at a meeting on September 5, 7:30 p.m., in town hall, will consider additional appropriations to meet the extraordinary emergency existing at this time. Appropriations will come under the plan commission in the amount of $675 for printing and advertising, office supplies and other contractual services.
