Navy Extends Buddy Program The Navy has extended its buddy program to guarantee assignment after recruit training to the same ultimate duty station. Previously, enlistees under the buddy program were guaranteed only that they would undergo recruit training together in the same recruit company. The new program, which became effective August 1, is on a six-month pilot basis. “Buddy” enlistments are limited to the navy’s new threeyear seafarer-airman program. Buddy groups cannot include more than four persons and must be in the same apprenticeships. Recruits under the seaman and firemen apprenticeships can be assigned to the same units and therefore can be in the same buddy group. But other buddy groups must either be all constructionman recruits or all airman recruits.

Indiana Swine Days Are August 30 - September 1

LAFAYETTE — In an effort to provide information for more Hoosier hog raisers, two educational programs will be held this summer. The first, August 30, will be Purdue Swine Day. This event will be at the livestock pavilion on the Purdue Farm Center, a mile north of U.S. 52 by-pass on county farm road. The second, September 1, is the Southeastern Indiana Pork Industry Day at the Southeastern Indiana Feeder Auction facility at Osgood. Registration for both events will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the general program starting at 10 o’clock. Similar programs will be presented at both meetings. Purdue agricultural economist David Bache will open the programs with a look at the hog price picture for 1972-73. Swine dysentery and TGE will then be discussed by Dr. E. O. Haelterman, Purdue professor of veterinary microbiology. Purdue animal scientists

Hobart W. Jones and James R. Foster will talk about methods of feeding sows. T. R. Cline and M. P. Plumlee, Purdue animal scientists, will summarize swine research at Purdue. Concluding the morning program, Dr. Walter Woods, head of Purdue’s animal sciences department, will discuss ongoing programs in that department. Ron Westerfeld, executive vice president of the Indiana Pork Producers Association, will open the afternoon programs with a progress report on the IPPA. Then Purdue agricultural engineer W. H. Friday will discuss “Do’s and Dont’s of Ventilation in Swine Buildings.” At Osgood John Hiatt, area Extension agent-livestock will discuss results to feeder pig grading at the southern Indiana feeder pig auctions. Don Hazelett, Marion purebred swine breeder, will talk about boar management, and James Schnabel, Farmersburg, partner in the William Ring operation

which produces 4,000 feeder pigs annually, will discuss sow management. Purdue animal scientist Wayne Singleton will summarize the Hazelett-Schnabel discussion, and a question and answer period will close the programs.
