Top Winners At Annual Art Show The annual Village Art festival at Nappanee was indeed a success again this year with around 550 entries in the art competition. Nearly two hundred artists and handcraftsmen had their wares on display and for sale at the flea market. Judge for this year’s show was Mrs. Jane Allen of Chicago. She is the art critic for the Chicago Tribune and writes a weekly column for the art and fun section of that paper. Mrs. Allen was introduced to local newspaper representatives at a luncheon on Friday. She gave a premier showing of the three top winners of the show to those present. In showing the winners in each division she noted that she always looks for originality, arrangement, and “enjoyable” pictures. She also stated that too often prizes are awarded to only water colors and not to other types of paintings. The S2OO “best of show” award this year went to Miss Vicki Cook of Plymouth. Her acrylic painting was titled “Interior of FWA4. The picture depicted the entrance from a hall to an artist studio with various containers of paints and a lithograph press. On thru the studio a scene of the outdoors was shown through the windows. The painting had good proportion and depth and gave one a true sense of light and space. According to the judge it was a very “individual” picture. The winner in the student division was Miss Beth Mayberry of Goshen. Entrants in this group must be between 12 and college age. Beth’s oil painting “Retired Cowboy” showed the interior of a barn with a cowboy hat hanging on the wall with a gun and holster below. Beside the hat was a photo which was apparently torn from an old newspaper. It was of a beautiful dark horse which had evidently been the cowpunchers life companion. The color and composition of the painting displayed a provocative mood. It seemed sincere and had beautiful colors and good contrast according to Mrs. Allen. In the children’s division the winner was Roberta Peiper of Fort Wayne. Her entry was an ink drawing called “Peiper’s Alley.” It showed various houses in great detail and was a well balanced picture. The bright colors were truly enjoyable to the eye and the intricate detail of the work was almost amazing for a child. It was a very colorful work with bright oranges, reds, yellows and purples. The judge this year felt that the time alloted (three hours) to judge so many entries was inadequate. She also noted to reporters that it was very hard to just giveone big prize for “best of show” when so many good works were on display. The best of show award is given by the sponsor of the show, Pletcher’s Furniture Village. Many other area artists won smaller cash awards and honorable mentions for their entries. CONTRACT T-9134 — Bibs are invited on Signs in the Fort Wayne District on the following* KOSCIUSKO COUNTY — US 30 and SR 19 —US 30and SR 15— US 30 and Center Street in Warsaw. t Plwis and Proposals may be examined at the Office of the Indiana State Highway Commission in the State Office Building, Room 1313, Indianapolis, Indiana.
