A few years ago some scientists theorized that long-term normal use of hairspray or other cosmetic aerosol products might damage the lungs. The federal Food and Drug Administration and several industrial laboratories conducted extensive tests to find out if these theories might be true. Hairdressers, who in their work are exposed to much more hairspray than normal users, were the subjects of some of the tests. None of the tests showed any relationship between the use of cosmetic aerosols and lung disease. However be sure that you use them sensibly. Be careful not to spray these products into your eyes; that could cause painful irritation. It is also a good idea to use hairspray in a large, wellventilated room, not because it is dangerous, but because a noseful of hairspray can be pretty unpleasant. Tahara Family Os Japan At Mount Tabor Church The Tahara family from Japan will present a program of music, inspiration and information on the work and ministry of Christ in Japan Sunday, July 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Mount Tabor church, six miles south of Nappanee. The program will feature Mrs. Tahara’s in-person accounting of her life as a dis-illusioned teenager who tried to commit suicide by leaping into the path of a passing train. In addition to Yoneko’s amazing story, the Tahara’s will present several musical numbers. They will also tell of their work in Japan as film missionaries. A motion picture has recently been produced on Mrs. Tahara’s experiences as a teenager. Prior to moving to their home in Tokyo, the Tahara’s lived on the island of Okinawa. There Tahara was active in missionary radio work, as well as serving as the pastor of a Japanese church. It is not the desire of the Tahara family to devote their full time to the ministry of Christian films, establishing both production and distribution throughout Japan. The pastor of the Mount Tabor church, Darrell Prichard extends a cordial invitation to all the public to attend this very exciting service. Boat-In Services Now In Full Swing The Boat-In Worship services being held at Syracuse each Sunday morning from 8:30 to 9 at the Oakwood Park Pier are in full swing and have been well attended. Services are conducted from a platform on a pontoon whereby worshippers may join by boat or land to hear and participate. Five churches in the area and pastors of the church have joined together for these services, the third year in a row. Participating churches are the Church of the Brethren, Church of God, Calvary United Methodist church, Saint Andrew’s United Methodist church and Wawasee Lakeside chapel. Caring For Furniture Surfaces LAFAYETTE — Furniture surfaces retain a new look longer and mellow nicely in old age, if they are cared for, says Sandra Westall, extension home furnishings specialist at Purdue university. It is important to know exactly what the surface is in order to follow proper cleaning treatment. Pre-testing any new wax or polish on an inconspicuous area is a gool idea. The wrong type of product for the particular pieces can sometimes change the finish, affect the color or just prove unsatisfactory and require complete removal. The surfaces of most case goods or nonupholstered pieces are made of wood, plastic, leather or marble. The test way to identify wood is to read labels and ask questions when shopping. Though various woods have different characteristics of grain, markings and color, these can be changed through finishing processes. Miss Westall says that most furniture made today is made of veneered plywood. The veneer is made by sandwiching thin layers of wood against a center solid core and permanently bonding them together under pressure. This construction reduces warping and swelling, adds strength and greatly reduces cost by using the beautifully grained hardwood in thin sheets on the exterior surfaces only. However, lesser woods and even plastics can be made to resemble expensive hardwoods. To know what you are buying, Miss Westall suggests checking the label for the word “genuine” walnut — or whatever the wood — as opposed to walnut finish, which means simply that the piece looks like walnut, but is something else. Routine care for all wood includes frequent dusting, occasional washing, infrequent thorough cleaning and polishing, and making minor repairs as needed. Major repairs of stains and gashes should not be attempted by a novice. Dust top surfaces with a clean, lint-free cloth daily and schedule all-over dusting once a week. Light wax or polish — particularly on the top which gets the heaviest use — may be applied when dusting. Wipe up spills promptly with a damp sponge or cloth, says Miss Westall. A little polish may need to be applied to bring back the luster. Acrylic plastic furniture should be dusted with a damp cloth. If the cloth is dry, the dust particles might scratch the plastic. Car wax, without a cleaner, can be used to give a protective coating to the top surface.
