Conner, publisher of the Seymour Daily Tribune, the Scott County Journal and Scott County Chronicle, Scottsburg, was elected president of the Hoosier State Press Association at a board of directors meeting held Friday at Ulen Country Club in Lebanon. Conner, 49, succeeds A. L. Moss; publisher of the Delphi Journal-Citizen and the Flora Hoosier Democrat. Other officers elected were Robert E. Pearcy, editor of The Danville Gazette, vice-president; Don R. Bucknam, general manager of The Angola Herald and The Steuben Republican, reelected as secretary; and Eugene S. Pulliam, assistant publisher of The Indianapolis Star and The Indianapolis News, treasurer. Returns From Viet Nam Tour Sp. 4 Michael Lynn Haifley, son of Rev. and Mrs. David Haifley of Syracuse, returned home Thursday on furlough following a 12-month tour of duty in Viet Nam. He will be reporting to Fort Carson, Colo., for his next base station. One Injured In Boating Mishap Seven-year-old Gill Qoud, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Cloud of Lexington, Ky., sustained a severe head laceration last Wednesday when the boat in which he was riding rammed into a pier in the channel south of Coy’s Bait Shop, Syracuse, breaking two support beams of the pier and making a hole in the hull of the boat. The 16-foot outboard operated by Gill’s father, was towing another fishing boat when the tow line tangled putting the motor throttle in full speed causing the mishap. The pier was owned by E. D. Hilligoss. Gill’s brother James, 11, and also a passenger in the boat was examined at the office of a local physician. Minor Injuries In Two-Car Crash Willard B. Mason, 39, 3637 Indiana Rd., Toledo, Ohio, collided with an auto driven by Lowell W. Clark, 60, r 6 Warsaw, Tuesday on SR 15 at the intersection of Main St;, Leesburg. The Mason auto was northbound on SR 15 and the Clark vehicle was attempting to turn onto Main St. from the southbound lane of SR 15 at the time of the accident. Damage was listed at' $5,000 to the Mason car and $1,400 to the Clark auto. Mason complained of a sprained ankle but did not require treatment following the accident. 4-H Dress Revue Held During the 1972 Elkhart 4-H Dress Revue held at Northridge high school this month in a twoday event, a total of 37 participated in the apron category which is for first year clothing members with Becky Breeden of Syracuse receiving a red placing. Mary Yoder of Syracuse received a blue placing in the first dress category for third year clothing members. Honor group awards will be announced at the fair dress revue at 2:30 p.m. on July 29. Clothing project members ages 15 and over are eligible to be sent to represent Elkhart county at the state fair and the girls may chose the category in which they will compete, with six possible categories available. Donna Sheline of Syracuse is eligible for a blue placing in a school dfess; and Barbara Weybright, Syracuse, for a blue in dress-up dress. State fair and honor awards will also be announced at the revue on July 29.

ONE YEAR AGO Released this week was an architect’s drawing of the Liberty Homes corporate offices to be constructed in the Goshen Industrial Park. The engagement and approaching marriage is being announced for Miss Susan Smith and John Hulley with August 7 set as the wedding date. An estimated $25 in change was taken from the Sportsman’s Bar in a forced entry over the week end. The annual dinner meeting of the Syracuse Lake Association is planned for this Saturday evening in the Smith-Walbridge camp recreation hall. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gillis of r 3 had as their callers last week, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Brooks, Lafayette. Mr. and Mrs. Laucks Xanders announce the marriage of their daughter, Chris, to Robert E. Trame, on Saturday, July 17, in Saint Augustine church at Rensselaer. FIVE YEARS AGO The Syracuse Police and Firemen’s parade Saturday was viewed by 12,000 persons. Members of the Syracuse town board of trustees, in regular session Tuesday night, cast a resolution to dissolve the present industrial park board due to it’s inactiveness. Dr. and Mrs. Fred Stockinger moved Saturday to Grand Rapids, Mich., where he is resident sergeon at Butterworth hospital. 4 Miss Janet Purdum has been named Hanover college admissions scholar for 1967. The annual picnic for the Weatherhead Pioneer club was held Sunday at the Kosciusko county fairgrounds with 500 in attendance. Wedding bells will ring at the First Methodist church, West Lafayette, on September 2, for Sally Jo Fosbrink and Robert Martin Jones. Miss Sandra Kern and Mark Arthur Wagner exchanged wedding vows Saturday, July 8, in the Syracuse Church of God with Rev. Ralph Wagoner officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Schlotterback of r 4 were in Chicago Saturday visiting the museum, planetarium and other points of interest. TEN YEARS AGO Thieves entered Wawasee Bowl this week however nothing was taken. Loren Longenbaugh has been named to the Syracuse town board of trustees and was sworn in Tuesday night by clerktreasurer J. Barton Cox. Clifford Byrd remains unconscious at South Bend Memorial hospital where he was admitted several weeks ago for injuries sustained in an auto accident near Cromwell. Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Myers and children of Winter Haven, Fla., have returned home following a week’s visit in the Nelson Auer home and with other friends in the area. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Falasco and Jerry, Cleveland, Ohio, spent the past week in the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Maresh. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Huey were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Huey at Fort Wayne. FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The com borer has reached Syracuse and was found Monday in the garden of MisS’Aliee Baum. Charles Hutchinson has made arrangements to open the Community Theatre again on July 23 and the first feature will be “Fig Leaves.” Last week, 2,000 baby fish were placed in Wawasee and Papakeechie lakes from the Fort Wayne hatchery. The new channel is now open for boats between the two lakes. The Syracuse Cash Meat Market under Ben Julier and Don Ganger advertised this week, pork shoulder roast, bacon ends, and bacon squares, 25c a pound and good, tender beef roast, 20c. Klink Brothers Meat Market advertised pork chops, pork roast, sausage, pork shoulder and hockless picnic ham, all at 25c a pound. William H. Noll has purchased an oceanfront estate at Miami Beach, Fla., for $160,000. LOGANSPORT, July 19 - While aiding, to hitch a team cf horses to a wagon on Monday, Mrs. Ed Cannon, 35, a farmer’s wife, had one-half of her right ear bitten by a horse. Alan E. Baumbaugh On President's List At IIT Alan E. Baumbaugh, son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Baumbaugh, box 92-B r 2, Syracuse, was named to the “President’s List” at Indiana Institute of Technology, Fort Wayne, for the third quarter of the current school year. To achieve this academic distinction, a student must earn a grade average of 3.50 or higher, out of the 4.0 grading system, during any academic quarter, and must have been enrolled for at least 12 quarter hours of college credit courses during the quarter, with a minimum cumulative average of 2.0. Baumbaugh is a senior at Indiana Tech, where he is majoring in physics;’ He was a 1969 graduate of Wawasee high school. Autos Collide In Goshen Autos driven by Mrs. Clarence Eby, 49, Syracuse and Randall L. Knisley, 16, r 2 Syracuse, collided at the south edge of Goshen Thursday afternoon resulting in $230 in damage. The mishap occurred as Mrs, Eby turned south from College avenue onto Main street and was rammed from behind hy the car operated by Knisley who was unable to stop in time due to wet pavement.
