Dr. Tom was honored at the session where over 3,000 members, dental assistants and hygienists assembled. To be eligible for life membership, a member must be at least 65 and a member of the association for a minimum of 35 years. Dr. Tom, who grew up in the Syracuse area, practices dentistry in Union Mills and makes his home at LaPorte.

A REAL WINNER — First place winner of motorized floats in the annual Saturday night parade at the Mermaid festival was Counting House bank. This photo caught the unit as it passed the bank who sponsored the entry. In the famous nursery rhyme bank counting his money as 1972 cutie king Steve White and his sister, Lisa, who was the queen with her bread and honey. They are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen White of North Webster. The float is a replica of the proposed new bank building to be constructed in the downtown area of North Webster. The float was second place winner in the cutie parade on Wednesday evening also.
LAKELAND LOCAL Mrs. Mae Rinker of Syracuse and granddaughter, Debbie Lahne of Indianapolis, have returned from Costa Mesa. Calif., where they attended the commencement of the former’s son, Jerry A. Rinker, at Southern California college.

Marvella Bayh To Aid Girl's State WASHINGTON, D C. - For the 12th year, Mrs. Marvella Bayh, wife of Indiana Senator Birch Bayh is an advisor to the annual Girl’s State meeting at Indiana university, Bloomington, this week. The week-long event is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Bayh is an adviser to the Federalist party and will help to organize and direct the Girls’ State senate. New Salem By MRS. HERB MOREHOUSE HELD FROM LAST WEEK GOODMANS ARE GUEST SPEAKERS Rev. and Mrs. Watson Goodman were guest speakers at both the morning and evening services Sunday. Rev. Goodman is founder and president of the World Missionary Press at New Paris. The Missionary Press prints scripture books in many languages and distributes them to all parts of the world. The Goodmans gave special music at both services and were accompanied by their daughter Ruth. —NS—COMMUNITY NEWS Ellis Wildman was dismissed from the Tuscon Medical Center to his home in Tuscon last week. Mrs. Inez Shively is at her home near Leesburg after being a patient in Goshen hospital. Russell Baker was dismissed last week from the Fort Wayne Veterans’ hospital to his home near North Webster. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Ferverda, Miss Clara Driver of W’arsaw and Mrs. Blanche Chambers of Grand Rapids, Mich., attended the Byerly reunion at Decatur on Sunday. Mrs. Elsie Weybright and Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Sizemore and family enjoyed a fishing trip to Minnesota last week. Mr. and Mrs. Max Shively and Mrs. Emmal Dye were guests at an out of doors pontoon supper on Chapman Lake.; It was given by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schaff of Leesburg. Mrs. Schaff and Mrs. Shively are sisters and daughters of Mrs. Dye. Rev. and Mrs. David Beer will be guest speakers at New Salem June 25. Rev. Beer will be telling of his work in Alaska during the morning worship service and showing slides during the evening service. Wawaka Church To Host District Women's Idea Shops The district officers of the Womens fellowship of the Church of the Brethren are sponsoring two idea shops at the Wawaka church on July 11. The first will be an afternoon meeting from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the second will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The shops are planned especially for helping officers but others who are interested are urged to attend also. Local churches are ask to bring program ideas, patterns, books of interest and project items such as the layettes and toys made and bought for Bethany hospital.
Manchester College Receives $ 120,700 Grant For Science
The award of a National Science Foundation grant of $120,700 to Manchester college for support of a “College Science Improvement Program” was announced today by president A. Blair Helman. Dr. William R. Eberly, professor of biology at the college, was named director of the program. Its purpose is to develop and improve science and social science instructional programs in the area of environmental studies at Manchester college. The grant provides support for the development of an academic major in environmental studies and the establishment of an environmental studies institute which will promote a variety of activities in the area of environmental education.
