Webster Mon Heads Kiwanis International

Lorin J Badskey, well known North Webster resident, was elected president of Kiwanis International June 21 at the organization's 57th convention at Atlantic City, according to Don H Arnold, president of the Lakeland Kiwanis club As leader of the international service organization. Church Os God Sets Building Program

In a special congregational business meeting on June 21, members of the Syracuse Church of God voted unanimously to enter into a building program for expansion of classrooms Another meeting is scheduled for Wednesday. July 5, for the purpose of electing three members and a chairman to serve along with the trustees as a building committee There will also be an election of a trustee for a three year term.

Lakeville Girl New 'Queen Os Lakes'

Another North Webster Mermaid Festival is history and another “Queen of Lakes" has been crowned, climaxing one of the Midwest's greatest small town events. Walking off with the coveted “Queen of Lakes” title, complete with glittering crown and scepter Saturday night was Miss Rhonda Butts, 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Butts, r 2 Bremen. The tall (5’ 7") honey blonde, blue eyed beauty just graduated from LaVille high school and plans to enroll at Purdue university as a speech and hearing therapy student. She won the title over a field of 24 other entrants, and received S2OO in cash along with the title. Miss Butts was entered as “Miss Lakeville Lion,” and sponsored by the Lakeville Lions club. Other Beauties First runner-up in the beauty pageant was Miss Connie Atkinson of Albany, entered as “Miss Albany" by the Albany Band Boosters Second runner-up was Miss Teresa Beer, entered as “Miss Milford'' by the Milford Lions club. Third Boat-In Service Held

For the third year in a row. Boat-In Worship services are being held at Syracuse with the first service held last Sunday. The services, to run through Labor Day. are held from 8:30 to 9 each Sunday morning on Lake Wawasee near Oakwood Hotel and are conducted from a platform on a pontoon where by worshipers may join by boat or land to hear the service. Theme this year is “Ski In To Boat In” and was well attended Sunday in-spite-of chilly weather.

‘Flamed By The Spirit’ Is Conference Theme

The annual conference for the Church of the Brethren is now in session at Ute new convention hall in Cincinnati, Ohio. The theme is ‘’Flamed By The Spirit”. It is the first annual conference to be held in southern Ohio since the late 1800's. Sessions are in progress from June 27 thru July 2. Dale W. Brown, professor of Christian theology at Bethany Biblical seminary, is moderator for this year. Among the mam speakers at the conference is Phyllis Carter of Bryant, she is currently pastor of Bethel Center church in southcentral Indiana Other speakers are Graydon F. Snyder, Lombard, Ill.; Robert O. Hess. Manheim. Pa.; and Tom Skinner of Brooklyn. New York. Bible study' leaders for the conference are David L. Miller, DeWitt, New York. Rosemary Reuther of Washington, D.C.; Kenneth L. Gibble. Harrisburg. Pa.; and Anna B Mow. former missionary of Roanoke. Va. One of the resource leaders in the youth ministries is Dennis Rumfelt, director of youth at the Goshen City Church of the Brethren. Wawasee Jay-Shees, and Miss Lana W'elty. entered as “Miss Etna Green Lady Lana” by the Etna Green Junior ONO (Our Night Out). Miss Kathy Stout, entered as "Miss Daleville Band" by the Daleville Junior-Senior band, was chosen by the other contestants as "Miss Congeniality.” On Friday night, in a preliminary competition. Miss Chris Caywood was chose as “Miss Swim Suit.” Large Parade The entire week of activities was dampened by unseasonably cool weather, with some rain on Friday night. The parade, which began at 4 pirn. Saturday with temperatures hovering at 50 degrees, saw viewers bundled up in heavy coats and blankets, although it was considered one of the largest audiences in the 27year history of the festival. The parade brought a large assortment of bands, walking and marching units, and colorfully decorated convertibles and floats. It lasted two hours and forty-five minutes. Shivering in a brisk wind that came up at the end of the parade, one spectator was heard to say, “At least no one is passing out.” A year ago, the parade was held

Syrocuse Police-Firemen's Fair Set For July 10-15

Plans are underway for the annual police and firemen’s fair at Syracuse as sponsored by the Syracuse Police and Firemen’s Benefit Association. Inc., for the week of July 10 through 15. The fair will officially open at 7 p.m. on Monday at the fairgrounds south of town just west of SR 13. A tractor pull contest is scheduled for Tuesday night with weigh-in time from 6 to 7 o’clock at the fairgrounds, scales will be furnished. The contest starts at 7 p.m. Prizes and trophies will be awarded. Further information may be obtained from Tom Strickler. The BPW ladies will hold an ice cream social at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in front of the V.F.W. building. Wayne Coy is in charge of the Kiddie Parade scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday with line--19 to be south of the railroad tracks in the Liberty Homes parking lot. Fire, Break-In At Strieby Farm

A 2 am. fire on Monday morning reported to Syracuse firemen at the Robert Strieby farm about six miles east of Syracuse was responded to by Syracuse firemen who stood by until Benton township firemen arrived and was leveled at an estimated value of SII,OOO with fanning equipment. Thought to be of unknown origin, the bam is on the Phillip Strieby farm, formerly that of his father Robert Strieby. son of the Phillip Striebys, a friend, Rex Shriner. had just moved to the farm on June 10.
