Peg, shown in the center, placed fifth in the standing long jump and eighth in the shot put. Beverly, on the right, ran in the 220 yard dash but did not place. The meet was held May 20 at Benton Central with 71 schools competing.
Girls Compete At WHS For Ist Season
Wawasee high school girls have completed their first year of inter-scholastic competition. There were 59 girls participating in volleyball, basketball, swimming, gym nasties and track. The girls were honored guests > of the Girls Athletic Association's first sports banquet held May 16. Most of the girls earned a certificate and their numerals The following girls were awarded a letter “W" — Colleen Beer. recorded a 5-4 record, beating such schools as Bremen. La Ville, John Glenn. North Judson and North Wood Mrs. Cindy Peterson’s basketball team was unable to capture a win but showed much improvement as the season progressed Girls are not brought up basketball minded, therefore, many practices were used to learn the fundamentals. young blood as there were no seniors on the squad. The girls won second place in the district meet and Amy Purdum qualified to go to the state meet on the balance beam. Mrs. Peterson coached the swimming team and lost to tough South Bend teams. The girls are showing good, competitive spirit and are looking forward to next year. Berghorn were state contenders for Wawasee’s track team. Peg won fifth place in the standing long jump and Bth place in the shot. The track team’s spirit is high as the girls were undefeated and won second place at the district meet held at Wawasee. They were fifth in the regional from a field of 29 schools. The Warriorettes will be tough next year as they lost only two senior members. The team was coached by Mrs. Carpenter. The girls at Wawasee are looking forward to next year’s competition and are encouraging more girls to participate in sports. Athletes have an opportunity to develop strong, healthy bodies, a keen mind and strong moral character. Through athletic competition, girls will develop pride of performance and will develop confidence in their own abilities. So — gil ls, get with it! Sports are for you!

Girls' Awards Program Set For May 25 The concept of a girls' club organized for the purpose of becoming involved with the total sports program is a new one and has met with success at Wawasee high school. The girls’ sports club, newly farmed this year, has provided involvement in the total sports program of the school. Wawasee high school girls have served alternately at football games, basketball games, swim meets, wrestling matches, track meets, baseball games, etc. Their various duties and responsibilities were as follows: scorekeepers, timers, errand girls for coaches, presentation of awards, finish line assistants, program hand outs, etc. An program recognizing outstanding members of the club for its first year in existence will be held Thursday, May 25, club member who has served at the highest number of events will be recognized as well as the most active club member from each class. All girls in the community who will be freshmen at the high school next year and would like to learn more about joining the club are invited to attend this evening meeting. Refreshments will be served in the commons area.

No Injuries In Car-Truck Mishap Approximately $375 in damages were given in a cartruck mishap on private property at Wawasee Boat Company near Syracuse Saturday afternoon, however, no one was injured. Authorities reported a 1965 Buick dnven by Royce Myers, 23, r 3 Syracuse, was headed south at the business and seeing the westbound truck operated by Roger Butt, 20. r 1 Syracuse, applied his brakes before impact. Butt, driving a 1969 Chevrolet truck, also saw the other driver and stepped on the accelerator in an effort to avoid the collision. Syracuse police investigated. No Injuries In Single Vehicle Accident Oscar Midrano, 21, r 1 Milford, received no injuries when the auto he was driving struck a tree on South Union St., Warsaw, Sunday. He was southbound at the time of the mishap. 1 Midrano was cited for leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Damage was estimated at $75 to the tree and S7OO to the Midrano auto. Warriors Defeat Bremen To Tie For NLC Lead The Wawasee Warrior golf team traveled to Bremen Monday night and came home with a win and a tie for first place in the Northern Lakes Conference standings. Wawasee’s A team won 154-171 while the B team won 178-182. Leading the Warriors were Larry Stidham with 37, Bob Bauman and Greg Ummel with 38 and Dal Ummel and John Didier with 41. Bremen’s Brad Stien led his team with 40 while Charles Schramm hit 41, John Graverson 44 and Lon and Phil Kiefer each hit 46. Wawasee’s B team was led by Steve Schrumpf with 41. k The Warriors now. have an 11-3 record for the season and the B team has a 10-3 -record. The school’s standings in the NLC is 5-2 with the tie being with Warsaw, Rochester and Plymouth. The conference winner will be decided June 1 when the NLC tournament will be held at Maxwelton. Mail Carrier Hit By Atwood Driver Mrs. Jerry Lowe, 35, r 3 Syracuse and a rural mail carrier for Syracuse, escaped injury at 11:40 a.m. Saturday as her vehicle was struck by an Atwood driver when she was attempting a left turn into a private drive for mail delivery about a half-mile south of Milford. Glenn M. Thomas, 47, was attempting to pass as Mrs. Lowe was trying to make the turn. State trooper Larry Clodfelt er investigated. Syracuse VFW Post To Install New Officers Newly elected officers of the Lakeside VFW Post 1342 of Syracuse are to be installed Thursday evening at 8 p.m. Steve Shedlock, third district commander, Rochester, will be on hand to do the installing. Wayne Coy will be installed as commander for 1972-73. The newly elected officers and delegates are making plans to attend the second district meeting at Knox on Saturday. Dinner will be served at 4:30 p.m. at the Knox post followed by district election of officers. The Indiana department convention will be held at Indianapolis on June 15-18. Syracuse will be represented at the convention by nine delegates. Convention headquarters will be at the Holiday Inn located at the intersection of 1-70 at Shadeland on the east side of Indianapolis. Opening sessions will be on Thursday for district and department officers with the general convention beginning on Friday.
