Electric Energy is a SLUDGE DRUDGE
o ’ / © o t o°» °o o° T/ 0 - fl
The most significant single cause of water pollution is sewage—the unsanitary waste from homes and businesses which flows into community sewer systems and on>nto rivers and lakes. The problem, some experts tell us, could become a lot worse. ' But electric energy to the rescue 1 larger and more efficient sewage treatment plants—using more and more electricity—will go to work cleaning up our rivers, lakes and streams. Electric energy will continue to be part of the answer to solving our water pollution problems—just as it will in recycling trash into usable raw materials,

GALENA, ILL. - In the far northwestern comer of Illinois, this city is probably the most perfectly preserved historic town in the state. To many, this area is one great museum. There are interesting tours and some of the finest antique shopping in America. TURKEY RUN STATE PARK, IND. — This park on U.S. 41 west and south of Crawfordsville was established as Indiana’s first state park in 1916. Sugar Creek wanders aimlessly through the area between rock-walled canyons and moss-lined gorges. Atop the canyons are densely timbered hills which are prime springtime hiking areas. HOLLAND, MICH. — Windmill Island city park is located in the heart of family resort country in this part of Michigan. The park is a re-creation of a 200-year-old Netherlands countryside scene. Everything about the park is planned to typify a 1750 environment in the Netherlands. Focal-point of the park is ‘De Zwann,” a two-century old grain mill from the Netherlands which actually operates when the wind is right. MILWAUKEE, WIS. - Often known as the “Beer Capital of the World” this city is an excellent place to visit for enjoyable week end away from home. Downtown Milwaukee is one of MidAmerica's favorite shopping areas with the East Town area, between the river and the lakefront, offering a large selection of high fashion and speciality shops, art galleries and book stores Tours of the many breweries are also a favorite pastime. FORT KASKASKIA STATE PARK. ILL. — This state park a 238-acre memorial to the early
French and American pioneers who brought civilization to the Illinois wilderness, is located in the far southwestern portion of Illinois. It is situated atop a high bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. From the site of the fort, Kaskaskia Island can be seen separated from the Illinois mainland by a channel of the Mississippi River. This island is the only portion of Illinois located west of the great river. BROWN COUNTY STATE PARK, IND. — Owing much of its charm to an early pioneer atmosphere that has been preserved in its wooded hills and valleys, this park appears much as it did when the early settlers came to Indiana in covered wagons. The park is located 40 miles south of Indianapolis and 20 miles east of Bloomington. SPRINGFIELD, ILL. - The state capital is a fascinating area for the lover of history. It was here that Abraham Lincoln matured to manhood and developed the skills that later made him one of the most hallowed figures in America’s history. It is the site of the only home he ever owned, his law office and his tomb. Nearby is the recreated New Salem, the village where he served as postmaster and store clerk. McCORMICK’S CREEK STATE PARK, IND. - Near Spencer, this park’s varied landscape includes ravines, sinkholes and deep stone gullies. The most notable feature of the park is a deep limestone canyon formed centuries ago by the rushing waters od McCormick’s Creek. SOUTH HAVEN, MICH. \ - Located on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore, this area was a bustling international seaport before the Saint* Lawrence Seaway was dreamed of. Today, South Haven is a popular-sum-mer vacation area noted for its coho and Chinook salmon fishing. NELSON DEWEY STATE PARK, WIS. — Located in the southwestern portion of Wisconsin on the Mississippi River near Cassville, Wis., this park contains a fine exhibit of early-day farm implements and tools for crafts. There also is an authenic village of the 1890 era open for tours.
