She was assisted by Mrs. Oren Hall, soloist and Mrs. Wayne Slabaugh, pianist. In his very early years as a young boy, he desired to take piano lessons and started at 50 cents a lesson. Being dissatisfied with his teacher, young Gershwin changed to another instructor, charging $2 an hour. Unable to afford the charge and his teacher seeing the talent, prompted the teacher to give free sessions to possibly be repaid at a later date. Gershwin started in classics before he was out of high school and upon leaving school, began to work in music full time as a piano pounder of jazz, much against his parents wishes. His first composition was presented with Sophia Tucker in the audience. Spellbound by young Gershwin, she asked permission to take his composition to a publisher but the outcome only netted him a royalty of $5. Joi son His next break came when presenting his number “Swanee” with Al Jolson in the audience Jolson asked to give the number with Gershwin and immediate success came about, selling over a million records Paul Whiteman extended, an invitation for Gershwin to come to Hollywood, hiring him to write a concerto, “Rhapsody in Blue,” and a standing ovation was given. Later work by Gershwin included compositions for Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire plus the opera Porky and Bess and "Summertime.” A change soon came over the famed composer and he complained of severe headaches. His illness was soon diagnosed as a brain tumor and he died at the early age of 36. “Love Walked In'.’ was his last work prior to death. Each song was cleverly presented by Mrs Slabaugh and Mrs Hall. A committee composed of Mrs Miles. Mrs. Ernest Bushong. Mrs. George Kleopfer. Mrs. Merton Meredith. Mrs. Ray Price. Mrs Joe Rapp and Mrs. Richard Heyde. served refreshments.
