It reminded Sandy of the era around 1920 when he worked as a section hand on the B & O railroad out of Milford Junction. “We didn’t have any of this

modern machinery then,” Sandy recalled, “but did all that work with a pick and shovel.” He said Charles Speicher, Sr., was section foreman at the time. Charles Speicher, Jr., grandfather of M-J pressman Ted Speicher, was also a longtime section foreman. Several persons from Milford were in attendance at the Democrat Women’s style showheld in the Saint Andrew’s United Methodist church at Syracuse last Wednesday night. AEB, Mrs. Max (Mary) Duncan and Dwight Custer represented Our Town as models for the event. Mrs. Raymond (Fredonnai Custer of near Our Town is president of the organization. Mrs. Custer is also the Democratic candidate for county treasurer. The style show was presented by Tom Socks Sportswear of Wawasee Village with Tom Prickett on hand to supervise the event. Only in this great land of America could a Republican town board president present such a program for a Democrat Women's Organization. Bud and 1 were in attendance at the Lions state convention in Fort Wayne over the week end and kept running into Blake Baumgartner, now a resident of the Fort Wayne area. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Pinkerton were also in attendance at some of the functions of the convention on Saturday. Helen L. Griffith of North Webster sent the bossman some newspaper clippings which are around 60 years old. They concern Arthur Griffith from Milford. Arthur was the brother of Grace McDonald of Our Town. The article concerns Griffith’s death and his life history. Griffith was a lightning calculator who bewildered vaudeville audiences throughout the country with his mathematical wizardy. He was called “Pooze” and also went by the name of “The Marvelous Griffith.” Griffith, according to the article, attributed his wonderful ability to clear memory, short systems known only to himself and constant practice. From childhood he showed a remarkable aptitude for figures. Many residents of Our Town can remember hearing of Griffith standing at the side of the Big Four railroad as a swiftlymoving freight train passed and after it had gone would tell the number of each car, the name of the railroad to which it belonged and the total of the numbers and in every instance he was found to be correct. As proof of his lightning calculating system he once did the work of 14 clerks in the state auditor’s office at Springfield. 111., for three hours on a wager. Problems that would require hours of figuring by most persons were solved in a few moments by Griffith. The answer to a problem like this would be at his tongue’s end: “What is the compound

interest on one cent at six per cent from the birth of Christ to the present date, and how far would that many silver dollars reach in the air if placed flat and against each other on every square foot of a clear and level tile floor 25,000 miles in circumference?” Such as this were regarded as “light mental exercise” by Mr. Griffith. Does anyone remember this great man of math?
